7 – The Nightmares’ Siege

Luo You held a silver-white pistol in his hands. From the beautiful work of art like design, it was impressively a desert eagle designed by Magnum Research Inc. in the old era, yet it’s caliber was larger than the traditional 0,357, which resembled a beast’s bloody maw, adding an intense sense of ferocity to it.

Luo You casually waved his hand, dispelling the smoke coming from the muzzle, before putting it back into his bosom. Luo You had redeemed the desert eagle from the Cube. It was more overbearing than the man-made ones as the caliber was increased and the gun barrel was lengthened, increasing its destructive might by a great extent. The gunpowder and bullets were unique to the Cube, which sharply raised their might. The desert eagle was provided with unlimited ammunition, saving people the heartache from using it.

Of course this overbearing and cost-saving weapon had its a price, reward points that is. One C-rank reward point was required to redeem a desert eagle.

In theory, the rewards provided by the Cube’s missions were to be equally divided among the squad members. For instance, if a three people squad were to complete a C-rank mission, then they would get one C-rank reward point for the entire team. Each person participating in the mission would only receive one third of one C-rank reward point.

Although the mission rewards would be adjusted according to the degree of contribution of the members, but to accumulate one C-rank reward point wasn’t that easy. With the previous arrangement as an example, in order for the three people squad to get hold of desert eagles, they would have to complete three C-rank missions altogether. The danger could very well be imagined.

It was precisely because the rewards had to be equally divided that a team would be in a relatively awkward plight. If there were too many people in a team, then each person would have see their share of the reward reduced, but if there were too few people, then the danger of a given mission would increase. As a result, the first thing each team would have to consider was the number of people in the team; there could be not too many nor too few.

Of course, a lone wolf like Luo You was a peculiar case. In a sense, he was a crazed gambler. All the dangers from missions were shouldered by himself, while the rewards were gobbled up by himself as well. It was like putting his head on a giant roulette. Although the rewards were the most generous, yet the casino token was his own life.

Therefore, the first consideration to get the desert eagle was to independently complete a C-rank mission.

While the second consideration of the desert eagle, or disadvantage, was the problem with the overheating of the weapon. After all, it was just a C-rank weapon. Its might was overbearing, and it had the advantage of infinite ammunition, but as a drawback, the firearm’s cooling problem was rather severe. After firing a few shots, it had to be rested; otherwise, it might explode. If that where to happen, not mentioning the wastage of a C-rank reward point, one could even loose their eyesight in the explosion.

After succeeding in his shot, Luo You took a look at the Nightmare’s body, before narrowing his eyes and sweeping the surroundings with his gaze. Suddenly, he felt that something was amiss. According to his experiences, Nightmares were communal, nocturnal creatures, and just like wolves, they hunted in packs. Therefore, why would this Nightmare act by itself?

However, Luo You very quickly found the reason.

Not far away, on the other side of a hill, that is, the direction from where the Nightmare had arrived from, came the sounds of various firearms opening fire, followed by the cries of Nightmares, miserable shrieks of humans, and the sound of blood gushing out!

It turned out that this Nightmare was by itself merely by accident. There was a pack of Nightmares operating not far away; moreover, they were raiding a human squad!

It was three odd kilometers away from the survivor base. The human squad being raided nearby, could it be…

Luo You swiftly climbed the hill. He concealed himself atop the hilltop, observing the situation down below.

It was a human motorcade. It wasn’t an armored squad; therefore, it should not be part of the military. There were just four trucks and one crudely tuned SUV equipped with a machine gun turret.

There were about twenty people in the motorcade, all men. Their clothes were very crude. In this ice-cold night, they could only wrap themselves in worn-out cotton-padded jackets. The wrinkles on their faces and cracks on their fingernails were full of dirt and filth. Simply by running a little, there would be sand and dust falling down from the surface of their bodies. These very typical survivors of the wilderness were commonly called “savages” by the worry-free residents inside the tall wall.

Since the outbreak of the disaster, not everyone had the chance to enter the confines of the wall protected by the regular army. A considerable number of people had stayed in the wilderness to fend for themselves. Some people were lone wolves like Luo You, fending for themselves; it was only natural that the majority of such people would not live long.

The rest of the people would assemble into communities and look for dangerous terrain with few mutants to stay in, struggling to survive everyday. The motorcade ought to be such an arrangement. They should have just finished gathering supplies, about to return to the base, yet by a stroke of terrible luck, they were met with a raid from Nightmares.

The attacking Nightmare pack was composed of eleven Nightmares. There were already seven or eight shredded bodies on the ground. However, the human squad was not defenseless. The humans should have had experience in surviving in the wilderness, and so they were aware of the Nightmares’ weakness.

At this moment, a high power spotlight mounted on the roof of a truck suddenly lit up. Although the lamp didn’t emit ultraviolet light and could not cause any substantive damage to the Nightmares, yet it was still critical to the Nightmares’ highly evolved eyes, which were capable of night vision. When illuminated, a Nightmare immediately shut its eyes in pain, issuing mournful screeches and struggling to retreat.

Taking advantage of this, a robust man dashed for the SUV, climbed into the co-pilot seat, lifted the mounted machine gun and then swept the Nightmare illuminated by the light.

The sound of bullets striking flesh lingered in the air. Even though the Nightmare had a thick hide, but after suffering the continuous onslaught from the machine gun as well as the fire from the other humans’ traditional firearms, the Nightmare illuminated by the spotlight was riddled with bullets, never to move again.

Immediately after, the spotlight mounted on the truck shifted towards the nearest Nightmare, ready to kill it in the same fashion.

Although equally nocturnal creatures, but there was a huge disparity in intellect between Nightmares and Vampires. Vampires were classified as highly intelligent life forms, they were full of deceit and exceptionally deadly. Luo You was definitely unwilling to come across them. On the other hand, Nightmares were classified as subpar intelligent beasts, with their intellect being limited.

Therefore, according to common sense, it was not impossible for this squad of humans to repeat the same trick over and over, and settle the remaining ten nightmares.

As he observed the battle, Luo You suddenly heard a head-splitting roar. The roar was exceptionally deafening and seemed to have a sort of frequency and pattern to it. Although it still could not be called speech, but at the very least, it already seemed to contain a sort of ‘signal’!

At this moment, something happened, leaving Luo You astonished. After hearing the sound, the Nightmares suddenly dispersed and started running around the motorcade. From time to time, they would spread their wings and glide above the the motorcade, weave about, and criss-cross, leaving people in a daze.

The humans were somewhat panicked. With the erratic movements, the spotlight had no way to illuminate the Nightmares and the machine gun, with its limited scope, had a hard time to aim at the Nightmares.

Then, a calamity occurred!
