Breach-14

Keith Lothal

Shit. Another man down. Only nine of them now left against a few dozen of these monsters. No help was forthcoming. There wasn't any time to plan. Shit.

He’d successfully coordinated an impromptu formation with a few other operatives, but that wouldn’t last long with the way things were currently heading.

"Aagh! My ar- These little-!"

"I need backup over here! Hey!"

Besides him, Riana was running over towards him after he had killed that spider monster leaping towards her. It had been a spur of the moment decision, one which a part of him regretted. That twisting technique he had just pulled off to save her was a massive drain on his limited reserves. If he had kept the water to himself, he could have saved that man fighting in front of him just now. A part of him cursed. His hydrokinetic Ability had limits on how much water he could control and for how long.

Sure, he had saved Riana, but honestly? The woman had seemed more like deadweight by this point. Despite being four years his senior at the Cordiale, she had seemed pretty paralyzed at this whole situation. A quick glance here and there since the fighting began showed him that the woman in question was only capable of stabbing a few of those smaller monsters to death. Was that seriously her full Ability? How was she picked for this job?

Shit. He wasn't thinking straight.

He wanted to curse out loud, but held it in. Not that anyone would have heard him anyways. The crittering, crawling, and whatever the fuck sound those things were making were drowning the whole scene.

Re-orienting himself, he impaled another one of those rodent critters with a spear of solidified water, before managing to nip another one of those spider monsters fighting not too far away in the abdomen. Thankfully, he still had a few more bottles of water left in one of his uniform pouches.

Click.

Out of bullets. He hadn't been counting. Thinking fast, he threw his useless gun towards one of those nearby monsters. It wouldn't have done much, but better than just throwing away the junk.

But suddenly, the rapid sound of explosions turned his attention away.

Turning his head around, he saw Riana, the woman he had just saved -and regretted doing so, wielding some white pistol in her hand and firing its contents onto the nearby monsters. Every time those bullets hit, the monsters exploded into a massive burst of flame. What kind of firepower was that?

No time to mope. Guess he had made the right choice in saving her after all. His manner of thought sounded cold and cruel, even to himself, but it was something he had to pick up over the course of the past three years to survive on this job.

Shaking his head, he roused himself from his thoughts. Besides him, he saw Riana still standing there, pistol still in hand, taking careful shots at the surrounding monsters. Every time she pulled the trigger, another monster died in a burst of flame.

There was something different about her now. More composed. More focused. Guess it had been her that outmatched him the whole time. With her back in the zone, maybe, just maybe, they had a chance of making out of this place alive.
