Chapter 34

I dip my pen into the ink container, my UV sight ready. Now, it's time to begin. And by 'begin', I mean tracing. After all, it's about working smarter, not harder. So why not utilize some AI assistance?

“Ruby, load the Sharpness enchantment blueprint,” I command through my thoughts.

Having already scanned the Enchantment Codex, I now have all the possible enchantments stored in Ruby's memory.

“Project an AR hologram of that enchantment for me.”

Before my eyes, the Arcanum letters appear and hover in space, glowing like hieroglyphic writing. It’s a mental hologram, visible only to me. Sophia cannot see it.

“Sophia, wanna place a bet?”

“Huh? Bet on what? What are you up to?

“Well, how many Sharpness enchantments do you think I can put on the dagger?”

“Haha, one! Two if you are really good!”

“What if I say that I can do three?”

“Three!? No way, that's impossible! And please focus on your enchantment, Jack. Once you start, you cannot talk!”

“Well, we’ll see!”

It’s not impossible, it’s just incredibly hard.

Arcanum is the language of gods, its power of creation is literally limitless. However, enchanting isn't without its limitations. It's impossible to stack thousands of enchantments on a single item to make it overpowered, due to enchantment points. These points indicate the limit to how much an item can be enhanced.

A Sharpness enchantment typically eats up 8 to 20 points, varying with the enchanter's skill and the quality of the ink. Better skills and higher-quality ink reduce the number of points consumed. This weapon has twenty six points. Theoretically speaking, it can be enchanted three times, but each enchantment has to be flawless. There’s no room for even the smallest error, and that’s humanly impossible. Sophia’s two Sharpness enchantments consumed twenty four, and that’s already incredibly good.

For a normal human that is.

But for someone with the most advanced AI helping him out secretly?

I wouldn’t be satisfied with anything less than perfection!

So, I drag the AR hologram over the dagger, arranging enough space for three Sharpness enchantments. There is a lot of space to write so I don’t have to stack any letters. I steady my hand, hold my breath, heightening my focus to the max. Then, following the hologram's guidance, I trace the lines with ink.

After a while, the task is finished.

“WHATTTT!?” Sophia gasps in shock as she sees me write the third enchantment.

Pen stop. The dagger glows brightly.

“So, how is this going to turn out?”

Because based on the textbook, enchanting is said to be extremely random, RNG-based. The Sharpness enchantment can range from +1 to +10. It can increase by a whopping 10 points, or just a mere 1 point. Depending on luck, it can either become a very strong weapon capable of taking lives in the blink of an eye, or just some hot garbage that's literally useless for anything beyond chopping carrots and onions.

As the light fades and the ink settles down, I appraise it.

My heart is racing with excitement.

[Steel dagger]

Weapon Rating: 92 (up by 68)

Weight: 512 grams

Attributes:

Sharpness: 40 Durability: 144/145

Special Ability:

None

Enchantment:

Sharpness + 10 Sharpness + 10 Sharpness + 10 Enchantment points: 2 (decreased by 24)

—---------------------------

It’s perfect.

But I don’t say anything yet, because I want to see Sophia’s reaction.

“Come on? How is it?” Sophia comes to look at the dagger. “Even if it gets three enchantments, it’s not guaranteed that it will be better than... mine?”

Oh, it’s so funny to see her jaws drop in sheer surprise. She flips the dagger, moves it to look at it from many different angles, her hands trembling.

“J-J-Jack? Is- is this real?” Sophia stammers.

“Of course!”

“Wait…” she shakes her head in disbelief. "How come you didn't tell me that you are a Grandmaster Enchanter?”

“Erm… because I’m not?”

“Like hell I would believe that!”

She has a point. The only plausible explanation she can fathom for this almost inhuman feat is that I’m secretly a Grandmaster Enchanter, the pinnacle of enchanting achievement.

But now, I'm left wondering: is enchantment truly RNG-based, or is it a matter of skill? In the art of enchantment, even grandmasters struggle to achieve consistency. Perhaps this inconsistency has led many to attribute success to RNG.

With Ruby's help, inconsistency is virtually non-existent. Eager to find out, I head outside to buy more equipment.

It appears I've found my answer.

“Jack… I can’t believe anything anymore…” Sophia mutters, now sitting in a corner, laughing somewhat hysterically to herself. “Perfect enchantment every time? Am I dreaming?”

I do feel a twinge of guilt, though. Imagine dedicating years to mastering a craft, only to have some random dude with no prior experience outperform you effortlessly. It’s a crushing reality, similar to how many felt when AI began replacing jobs back on Earth.

But I believe Sophia can overcome this shock. I’ll buy her some sweets later as a small consolation.

Now, it's time for a new challenge: can I enchant items from Earth?

With that thought, I place my army knife under the appraisal lens.

[Mysterious knife from otherworld]
