“Hmm, that was interesting,” I say, putting the sword down.

Ariella’s eyes wide in shock. The catgirl Bella has the same reaction.

“Master Edward, are you… done?”

“Why? Yes, I’m done.” I reply.

“But it hasn't been ten minutes yet!”

“Well, how long did you expect it to take me?

“Ermm… even at Grandmaster level, shouldn’t it be a couple days?” Ariella says. “Or a few hours at least. And not to mention, the Arcanum doesn’t seem to affect you at all! Did you really examine it thoroughly?”

“Oh? Are you doubting me?” I question back with raised eyebrows.

“No, but it’s just too unbelievable!” she hastily clarifies.

Well, she does have a point. The Arcanum on the sword is extremely complex, but that alone isn’t the only thing that matters. Based on my estimation, even at Grandmaster level, one can only endure the maddening effect of these Arcanum letters for no more than twenty seconds straight, and then would need to let their eyes rest for a few minutes. But I have mental status resistance, so no rest is needed, and then there’s Ruby doing Ruby’s thing.

But even so, ten minutes was still more time than I initially expected. The first four enchantments took me less than a minute to figure out in total. However, for the last two, I spent quite some time on them and eventually gave up, realizing that with my current level of knowledge, fully understanding them was impossible.

“So, can you tell me about the enchantments?” Ariella asks.

I proceed to share what I observed. “I identified a total of six different enchantments, all at very high levels. However, there are two enchantments that I’m not entirely sure about.”

“Wait!” Ariella suddenly interjects. “Isn’t it only five?”

“No, there are definitely six,” I assert confidently. Seeing the doubt on their faces, I decide to elaborate. “Alright, let me explain what they are.”

“Please do, Master Edward.”

I then begin to detail the enchantments to her.

"The enchantments are placed in six different layers. From the lowest to the highest layer, they include: one that allows the sword to grow with its owner; one that enhances the experience gained; one with anti-demonic properties, and finally, one that provides frost resistance. However, I’m sorry to say that I don’t know what the last two enchantments on the top layers are.”

“Wow, you really figured them out,” Ariella exclaims. “What are your thoughts on them?” she continues.

Well, I already know that she would ask that question. Therefore, I proceed to reveal to her what my thoughts are.

Basically, when examining an item, its enchantments are not merely indicators of its strength. Sometimes, they themselves can even tell an intriguing story.

As mentioned, there are six different layers.

Going from the lowest also means going from chronological order from the oldest to newest ones.

The first enchantment allowed the sword to grow with its user. All the sword's attributes - from sharpness and durability to magical holding capacity - were enhanced as the wielder grew stronger. Then, there's a second enchantment that significantly boosts experience gain. This suggests that the sword was initially crafted by a Grandmaster Enchanter for someone with substantial potential for growth. The possibilities are limited: perhaps it was made for one of their students or children, or as a gift to an important figure, such as a prince or princess. However, my strongest inclination is that it was intended for someone destined to become a future ‘hero’.

This is inferred because the third enchantment is of a 'demon slaying' type, giving the sword the power to purge demonic energy and deal extra damage to demons. Judging from the writing, this enchantment was not applied by the same individual who created the first and second ones. It's possible the owner grew strong enough to apply this high-level enchantment themselves, or they had assistance from another Grandmaster. Regardless, one thing is certain: they were engaged in combat against the demonic forces.

And finally, the last of the four enchantments I recognized was the 'anti-frost.' This one is particularly intriguing, raising a critical question: why choose anti-frost from all the powerful enchantments available? Its purpose is self-explanatory: it endows the weapon with the ability to withstand extremely low temperatures. But why was such an enchantment necessary for an already powerful sword? What sort of extreme cold could possibly challenge this blade?

This leads us to the fifth enchantment.

“Was it to seal a demon into the sword?” I ask.

Although I couldn’t fully decipher this enchantment, based on my partial understanding and the context provided by the first four, I make an educated guess.

Ariella nods in confirmation.

“Yes, it was indeed a seal.”

The demon must have possessed extraordinary frost powers. This would explain the intense cold I felt emanating from the sword, likely the residual mana from the sealed demon.

“But then, you mentioned there are six…”

“Indeed, there are six.”

For some reason, Ariella was only aware of the first five enchantments. The existence of the sixth was news to her, suggesting that perhaps even her father had overlooked it.

It’s understandable, though. The sixth enchantment appeared to be hastily inscribed, its symbols chaotic and the enchantment itself incomplete. The letters resembled nonsensical scribbles, likely leading previous examiners to disregard it.

But in this case, being nonsensical is actually revealing.

“The sixth must be another seal. The demon managed to break free from the first seal, prompting a second sealing effort. However, they failed,” I state my final conclusion.

Ariella nods slowly, absorbing my words. Then, suddenly, she stands and bows deeply. “Would you consider being my mentor, Master Edward?”

Her request takes me by surprise. I knew she had some sort of request, but I never imagined it would be this. I glance at Sophia, who appears just as stunned as I am. Her hand, still clutching the tea cup, is frozen mid-air, and her body is slightly trembling.

“This is all too sudden; please give me some time to think about this,” I respond.

“Of course,” Ariella replies. “Please take all the time you need. And if there’s anything you require, don’t hesitate to ask.”

As we stand to leave, the weight of Ariella's request hangs heavily in the air. It's not that I doubt my ability to be a good teacher, but rather that I’m uncertain about Sophia's feelings regarding this.
