[Threat]

On the rooftop, awash in the hues of the setting sun, Tayte and I stood in stunned silence after hearing the bombshell dropped by Shania, the self-proclaimed principal’s personal secretary.

“Preventing the principal’s return…”

Why would someone want to do that?

Principal Abigail was well-liked and respected by everyone at the academy. Not only that, she was a revered expert in magical research, capturing the attention of even magicians from other continents.

I couldn’t recall anyone at the academy ever speaking ill of Principal Abigail. So, Shania’s claim seemed too far-fetched to digest.

“…Are you sure about the accuracy of that information?”

“I get your skepticism. Honestly, I had a hard time believing it myself.”

“Huh?”

W-what did she mean by that?

“S-so, who exactly is trying to prevent the principal’s return?”

“It’s the Knight Commander.”

The leader of the knights of Bramshal Kingdom? Come to think of it, I had never met him.

“Why would the Knight Commander do that?”

“It appears that the knightly order disapproves her negligence, allowing an information leak causing the recent underground library incident.”

“Information leak? …Wasn’t it already established that it happened because of the involvement of the former heads of the Lekrust and Halman families? Both were familiar with the internal affairs of the academy.”

“However, evidence found during the investigation suggests that someone else was pulling the strings behind them, instructing them when to strike and how to take their daughters hostage.”

“Wha?!”

That meant there was another mastermind behind that incident.

And their true target was–Principal Abigail.

“No… Principal…” Tayte couldn’t hide her shock.

Tayte was one of those who wholeheartedly respected the principal.

Now that she had heard she was in a predicament, she seemed unable to stay still.

“…Barrett, let’s find them,” Tayte said, looking at me with determined eyes.

…Well, as the student council president, I couldn’t just stay still, either.

Besides, the academy festival would start soon.

This year, the academy festival would involve a neighboring country—the scale would be unprecedented. Any potential threat must be eliminated as soon as possible. If something went wrong, it could develop into an international problem, after all.

“Miss Shania, how can we help?”

“I will give you the detailed information later. Until then, please inform the other student council members of this matter and do what you can. Also, I don’t think it’s necessary, but just to be sure—”

“We have to keep this matter a secret from others, right?”

“That’s right.” Miss Shania smiled.

After Miss Shania left, Tayte and I settled onto a wooden bench on the rooftop.

“Quite a complicated problem we’ve got on our hands…” I muttered.

“You can say that again.”

Geez, it had been one problem after another since we advanced to the third year. Maybe it had something to do with the main story?

I guessed I might as well look into that while investigating the mastermind.
