Chapter 40: Unexpected Incident

_

Two hours later, Josh and John Leibler stood by the floor-to-ceiling window in Leibler’s office, watching Lyndon Schneider taken away in a police car.

In fact, at this point, Lyndon Schneider had already been forgiven by John Leibler.

Given the significant impact of this case, some necessary procedures still needed to be followed, and Lyndon Schneider was still required to spend some time in the police station’s detention center. However, he would not have to go to prison.

“Josh, I really appreciate what you did this time!” John Leibler thanked Josh sincerely.

His gratitude was genuine.

Lyndon Schneider’s confession helped him solve a big problem.

This problem was not just about the stolen jewelry.

Although those jewels were worth millions, anyone with some knowledge of the jewelry industry would know their cost would not exceed thirty percent.

This loss was not a significant matter for the Leibler family, who were wealthy and powerful. At most, it would cause some trouble reordering the goods and result in some indirect losses.

What made John Leibler happiest was that they had found out about Emery, the mole, especially before the police did.

As a lawyer who had been working with the Leibler family for decades, Emery had access to many secrets about the Leibler Group.

If these secrets were leaked, they would cause far more damage to the Leibler Group than the theft of the jewels.

If the police had found out about Emery’s involvement in the case first, there might have been some unexpected incidents during the process.

Josh’s unintentional action of bringing Lyndon Schneider to John Leibler for forgiveness helped John Leibler a lot.

It gave him enough time to deal with the beginning and end of these secrets.

“Hehe, John, don’t mention it. You are Margaret’s elder, so you are naturally my elder, and we are all family!” In response to John’s thanks, Josh replied politely.

“Yes, we are all family!” When he heard these words, John Leibler was slightly stunned, but then he burst into laughter and patted Josh’s shoulder.

If Josh’s large purchase of war bonds yesterday had impressed John Leibler, then now he truly recognized the young man in front of him.

It had to be said that Margaret had not mistaken Josh.

“Father, I heard…What are you doing here?” At this moment, John Leibler’s second son, David Leibler, rushed in and saw Josh there, and his face instantly fell.

“Why are you so restless? Can’t you see I have a guest here? You have no manners at all!” Seeing his son’s impatience, John Leibler became angry and scolded him.

Compared to Josh, who was calm and composed at a young age, John’s thirty-something-year-old son was a handful and addicted to beauty and pleasure.

Fortunately, John never expected this son, who was always out of line, to inherit the family business. He valued his eldest son, who controlled several states’ family businesses in New York.

Faced with his father’s rebuke, David had obviously become accustomed to it, and he casually greeted Josh with an unwilling expression.

Josh did not mind and said goodbye to John Leibler before leaving the Leibler Group.

He had already called Margaret while at the Leibler Group, so he wasn’t rushing to return.

Instead, he bought some food and daily necessities and prepared to bring them to Dix.

He didn’t want Dix to starve to death before he died from his injuries.

But on the way, Josh keenly noticed that the police, who had been everywhere searching for people, had disappeared from the streets, leaving only a normal number of patrol officers.

Obviously, with Lyndon Schneider’s confession and the resolution of the jewelry theft case, the police had naturally become less preoccupied and decided to focus on other matters.

“You look a lot better!” Josh said as he arrived at the small apartment and saw that Dix’s condition had improved considerably. Dix had been shot, and the bullet had gone through, but it hadn’t hit any organs. As long as the bleeding stopped and there was no infection, there was no need to see a doctor.

“Yes, the bleeding has stopped. Thank you very much, Mr. Kane. Do you know what the situation is outside now?” Dix thanked Josh and asked.

“There’s good news and bad news!” Josh said. “The good news is that the police have all left, so you don’t have to worry about them searching for you anymore, and you don’t have to flee to Canada.”

“That is indeed good news. What’s the bad news?” Dix nodded and asked.

“Your companion, Cody, was killed in a shootout with the police.” Josh shrugged and shared the information he had received from the police.

“What about Louis and Goss?” Dix sighed when he heard about Cody’s death. Although he had expected it, he was still deeply saddened by the news of his friend’s death.

However, he quickly regained his composure and asked about his other two companions.

“I haven’t heard the police mention them, so they probably haven’t been caught,” Josh said, shaking his head.

“Thank you!” Dix breathed a sigh of relief when he heard Josh’s words. This was another fortunate piece of news for him.

“Okay, don’t think too much. Rest well, and I’ll come back tomorrow!” Josh left some food and supplies and then left. He had spent so much time here that Margaret must be worried.

Sure enough, when Josh returned home, Margaret asked him about his visit to the Leibler Group.

Josh didn’t conceal anything and told her about his encounter with Lyndon Schneider, how he was an old acquaintance of his father, and how he convinced him to turn himself in.

“Emery planned all of this? It’s unbelievable.” Margaret was also very surprised when she heard about the jewelry theft case being committed by someone they knew.

But once she learned that the matter had been satisfactorily resolved, she also let go of her worries.

Josh also felt that the matter should be over by now.

However, if nothing unexpected happened, something unexpected was bound to happen.

The newspaper reported that the jewelry case had been solved early the next morning.

However, in addition to Lyndon Schneider turning himself in, there were a few unexpected details that surprised Josh.

One was that Emery had drunk himself to death before the police arrived.

The other was that at almost the same time Lyndon Schneider turned himself in, a broker named Cobby was arrested by the police and gave up everyone, including Emery.

So the police found Louis’ house that night.

However, Louis had already died of his injuries, so the police only arrested Goss, one of his accomplices.

Now only Dix was still wanted.

Fortunately, this little surprise didn’t have any effect on Josh.
