“Kyooooooo!”

“Shiiiiiiii!”

In the dense and twisted forest of Kaise, a brutal battle for survival is unfolding between two monsters.

“Kyooo!”

The Kaise Oomori Neko, a giant cat covered in reddish-gray fur, raises its log-like thick front legs, ready to strike with its iron-hard claws. This creature, over two meters long excluding its tail, is a monstrous being, entirely devoid of the charm typical of domestic cats, and covered in a sturdy armor of muscle.

“Shiiii!”

On the other hand, the Sharichetto, a large insect-like monster resembling a ladybug, counters the Kaise Oomori Neko’s claws with its hard black exoskeleton while emitting a high-pitched cry. Though smaller in size, about one meter long compared to its adversary, the Sharichetto’s eyes burn with an equal intensity of murderous intent.

This is a competition for survival: the winner eats, the loser is eaten. It’s a deadly, serious battle for life and death.

The ferocity of their clash is immense. Each swing of the Kaise Oomori Neko’s arm and every roll and charge of the Sharichetto shatters and splinters the surrounding Kaise trees. Any human caught in this fight would be reduced to mere flesh within five seconds.

Yet, terrifyingly, this is a normal day in the treacherous Kaise Forest, where blood and flesh are scattered as creatures clash in fierce battles.

“Kyooooo!”

“Shi!?”

A twist in the fight: the Kaise Oomori Neko, which had been striking from above, suddenly launches an uppercut. The Sharichetto flips over, exposing its soft, vulnerable underbelly, a weakness the Kaise Oomori Neko had already discerned. This was the wisdom of the wild.

The Kaise Oomori Neko grins at the sight of the struggling Sharichetto, flipping its six legs frantically to right itself. The cat had won. All it needed to do was pierce its claws into that soft belly and savor the sweet blood-soaked flesh. A moment of overconfidence proved fatal.

Suddenly, the Kaise Oomori Neko’s world spun. Its body wouldn’t respond, and it felt as if its head was rolling on the ground.

When the spinning stopped, its view was filled with its own headless body sprawled on the ground, blood spattering everywhere, and beside it, a bipedal creature with black fur on its head.

◇ ◇ ◇

The Sharichetto, managing to regain its posture, saw the headless Kaise Oomori Neko and a strange creature standing on two legs. The Sharichetto recognized this creature as a “human,” a frail being that occasionally entered the forest from the outside world. It had hunted and eaten humans before – they were weak but reasonably tasty.

Curling its body into a ball, the Sharichetto used its two strong legs to leap toward the human. The Kaise Oomori Neko, its recent adversary, was inexplicably dead, and now there was an added bonus of a delicious prey. The Sharichetto felt lucky.

As it rapidly approached the human, it expected its lethal attack, which even the Kaise Oomori Neko had barely evaded, would easily dispatch the human. It planned to enjoy both meals afterward.

But its thoughts were abruptly cut off.

The human, without showing any fear or change in expression, struck the iron-hard body of the Sharichetto at high speed. Despite the human’s arm appearing thin, white, and frail, the punch was far more powerful than the Kaise Oomori Neko’s claws or the Sharichetto’s charge. The Sharichetto’s body couldn’t withstand the force, cracking all over before being slammed into the hard ground and exploding, scattering its bodily fluids and shattered exoskeleton.

◇ ◇ ◇

The air was filled with the blood of the beast and the fluids of the insect. The damp wood scent was now overwhelmed by the stifling smell of blood. It was a ghastly scene, but in the Kaise Forest, a land of magic, this was a regular sight, a proud testament to the fierce battles fought by creatures striving to survive. However, the unusual aspect this time was that the victor, feasting on the flesh of the defeated, was a human.

The human was a seven-year-old female.

Her name was Emmy.
