Chapter 90 – Is this passage about salt, necessary?
Author Note:

Definitely. (Self Answering)

◇ ◇ ◇
“Chomp chomp…”
Good morning!

I, today too, consumed in the raw meat of monsters in the Demon’s Domain, the seven years old, Emmy-chan!

What I’m eating now is a creature called a Mouchakkiworm, a brown earthworm-like creature with a body length of about 2 meters!
«Hmm, quite a taste, indeed. It’s no wonder it’s a monster that bears the name of the renowned gourmet Mouchakki.»
Although it looks terrible!

I’m sure if I hadn’t been accustomed to eating (insect similar to) earthworm creatures since childhood, I wouldn’t have even thought of eating it.
«However, in a certain region, it was said that you could buy a title with just a piece of meat. It was considered a top-quality ingredient. I saw it on the gourmet god’s transmigration livestream in another world.»
Who thought that such ingredients inhabits the Kai Forest.
«Well, with selective breeding and established aquaculture techniques, it seems that it is not traded at such high prices anymore. Besides, there is no culture of eating Mouchakkiworms around here, so I assume they would refuse to buy them.»
Hmmm…

Even though it is this delicious…

The meat is tender even without being cooked, like shrimp.

It’s packed with flavor, and I’m sure it would make a good soup stock if you put it in soup or something.

The skin has a bit of resilience, making it difficult for ordinary people to eat, but for me, it is similar to a good offal.

Anyway, it’s delicious, and since there are no bones, it’s easy to eat.

“Chew chew… Chomp… Swallow.”
«Phew! That was delicious!»
…Thank you for the meal.

I offered my gratitude to the Mouchakkiworms that have become my flesh and magical power.
Today, I was lucky enough to encounter a group of Lovely Bunnies and was able to hunt them.

I also ate quite a bit of the forest’s blessing (venomous snakes), so my stomach was somewhat satisfied.

«So, what will you do today? The sun hasn’t risen high yet, so are you going to train again?»
The appointment with that corrupted receptionist was in the evening.

I remembered the location of the Saiishu Grass, so gathering would be done in no time.

Basically, I have free time during the day, so I always spent the extra time training or hunting!

Today, my plan was to continue training for a while after this.
…But.
«? What’s the matter, Emmy?»
Omake-sama…

When I was eating the Mouchakkiworm, did you considered something?
«Considered what?»
You know… If, there was salt.

Wouldn’t that insect… become more delicious…?
«!!!»
Right?

What do you think? Omake-sama.
«There is no need to think! If there was salt, of course it would have been delicious! However, for us, for us…!»
We can’t get salt…!

If I visit a store, my appearance will be considered creepy, and they will treat me rudely and kick me out…!

It’s ironic that what I want is salt, but their customer service is salty…!
Ahem.
…But, Omake-sama.

I have an, idea!
«…Eh? What do you mean?»
Hehehe.

You think that when I occasionally wander into Yoshanka during the day with no purpose, I was just aimlessly wandering around and getting hit by stones, don’t you, Omake-sama?

But I’ve actually done, my research!

I’ve found a shop where, even we, could probably buy salt!!
«Eh!? R-really!? Is there such a shop!?»
Omake-sama, you’re not observant enough!

Of course there is!
Geez, I can’t wait any longer.

I was planning to go there next time, but I couldn’t resist after eating the Mouchakkiworm.

I want salt!

So, from now, it’s shopping time, Omake-sama!

Let’s go to Yoshanka and get some salt~~~~!

Once it has been decided, I took immediate action!

I moved at full speed towards the town of Yoshanka.

The outer wall of the town?

Of course, I climbed it with [Silverfish]!

The main gate seemed to be extremely crowded lately, so this method was faster!

◇ ◇ ◇

«…So, is that the shop? Emmy?»
I was in front of a small shop located in a narrow alleyway off the main street of Yoshanka.

The building was made of stone, just like the other nearby buildings. There was a weathered wooden signboard that reads “Kansen-ya” installed on its roof.

Among the items displayed in the store are plates, swords, vegetables, wooden dolls of Topoporok, and looking carefully to the back… there it is! Salt!
«Indeed, salt is being sold… but if you can’t get them to sell it to you, then you can’t buy it, can you? Are you sure about this?»
Hehehe, hehehe!

Look at that grandma who’s standing guard, Omake-sama!
«Um, the old lady who’s sitting in a chair wrapped in a blanket in the back of the store?»
Yes!

…She looks kind, doesn’t she?

And probably because of her old age, her eyesight might have declined, you know!

If I cover my hair, I don’t think she will realize that I’m a cursed child!
«I see. So, she’s the targeted old woman, huh?»
Well, I haven’t heard of that idiom “the targeted old woman,” so I can’t say for sure… But anyway, I’m sure I can buy salt at this shop!

I entered the store, take a bag of salt, and went to the old lady.
“… Hello.”
I greeted her properly.
“…Hm? Oh, are you a customer?”
The old lady yawned loudly, and woke up.

She then rubbed her eyes and looked at my face…
“…Gyaaaahhhhhhh!! Cursed childddddd~~~~~!!!!!!”

And she screamed.

…………………… Huh?

«Hey Emmy, as expected, it is impossible!!»

“That appearance! The cloth wrapped around your head! You’re that cursed child who’s been lurking around Yoshanka lately!”
“Uh, well…”
“You can’t deny it! Your appearance perfectly matches the information posted on the town notice board about the ‘beware of cursed child!’”
What kind of notice is that!?

Do you think I’m a bear!?
“Get out! Get out, cursed child! There’s nothing for you to buy here! Are you trying to bring me misfortune!?”
The old lady snatches the bag of salt from me. She then grab some of its content… and threw it at me!
“Don’t you ever come here again!”
She keep throwing salt toward me!

Oh no, what a waste! What a waste~!

At this rate, it won’t be sellable anymore!

What a waste, so I lick lick the floor! Lick lick the salt!
«Wait, Emmy! Even in this world, throwing salt is a maximum form of rejection and insult! It’s not good for you to lick the salt like that!»
Eh, it is like that in this world too?

In my past life, throwing salt at a customer was generally an action with that kind of nuance.
«Then, all the more reason to stop! Okay? Besides, this is derived from the legend that hundreds of years ago, where the hero scattered salt to a giant slug monster called Aonar. In other words, you are getting treated as a slug… By the way, the saying “salt for Aonar” born from this legend…»
What is with that legend with so many points to retort?
«You should not retort while licking the floor! Heck, I’m the one who should be retorting now!»
“Enough already… Get out of hereeeeee!”

Contrary to her appearance, she was extremely agile and could dash out a skillful leg technique. And by that footwork, my light body get kicked out of the shop.
“Don’t ever come back!”
Hmph!

I wouldn’t come back to this place even if you didn’t say it! Hmph! Hmph! Hmph!
Aah~… salty.
«Emmy really is… sometimes becomes extremely stupid…»
I don’t want to be told that by Omake-sama.

◇ ◇ ◇

And so, my grand salt shopping mission ended in failure.

Truly, it is difficult to survive in society.
I walked dejectedly through the alley and returned to the main street.

“Hey! Move! Move-!!”
Thud!!

Then suddenly, there was an impact.

Ouch.
As soon as I stepped onto the main street, I was pushed by a big man running towards me and fell.

Oh, I said “ouch,” but it didn’t actually hurt at all.

My body remains unscathed if it was only this level of collision.

Maybe even if I were to get hit by a car, I wouldn’t die.
But you know, even though I was absent-minded, isn’t it cruel to suddenly push someone like that?

And there was no apology either.

Lately, my heart has becomed more and more agitated, and I almost let out my killing intent… Hm?
When I looked at the direction the man who knocked me down ran off to, there were a continuous bloodstain drops.
Unconsciously, I looked at the running man.

On the man’s back, there was another man who was slumped over.

There was a large wound that seemed to have been deeply gouged from his right shoulder to his back.
“Doctor! Doctor! Emergency!!!”
The big man who pushed me rushed into the Magic Treatment Institute adjacent to the Adventurers Guild branch office.
«It seems that something happened, doesn’t it?»
I became curious and ran towards the window of the institute, mingling with the other onlookers, and eavesdropped while peering inside.

Because of the sound of the sea breeze and the buzz of the crowd, it was difficult to make out what they were saying, but my super hearing managed to pick up their conversation.

“This… this is terrible! Quickly, bring me a potion! Let’s stabilize his condition first before we use a healing magic!”
“Yes, sir!”
An elderly man wearing what appeared to be a white coat similar to Kisket-sensei’s laid the injured man on the bed.

The assistant-like woman hurriedly opened a cupboard and took out a bottle containing a pale blue liquid, then brought it to the man in the white coat.
“Partner! Hold on, please, hold on, partner!”
The big man who pushed me, held the injured man’s hand, desperately calling out to him.

Beside him, the man in the white coat sprinkled the potion on the large wound.
“Here, the potion…! Alright… alright, it seems we made it in time.”
“Ah, ah, partner! Partnerrrr………!!!”
Then a soft light emanated from the injured area, the bleeding stopped, and the process of regenerating the flesh began.

Relieved that his partner’s life was saved, the big man slumped to the ground.
“Nevertheless, this is a severe injury. What exactly happened?”
While performing the healing magic, the man in the white coat asked the big man.
“We… we were collecting Togord eggs on the northern cliff. And then… it appeared…!”
“It…!?”

It…?
«Who could it be?»

“It was a red Togord! Hey, doctor, Togords are not supposed to gather in groups, right!? Even if we were found, they should lose interest in us, humans, and quickly leave to somewhere else, right!?”
The big man trembled as he spoke, holding his forehead with both hands.
“But… the Togords flying around him were different…!”
“What did you just say?”
“It was hellish…! Every time that red Togord called, they stubbornly attacked us as if they were being commanded! Because of that, my partner… my partner!”
“I see… so a dangerous individual with unique abilities appeared…! You, immediately contact the Adventurers Guild branch office! We need to temporarily halt the request for Togord egg collection!”
“Yes, sir!”
The assistant woman started to prepare for going outside, making hurried footsteps.

Hmm, it seems a dangerous monster has appeared in the northern cliff.

That guy came back in a panic after his partner was taken down by it.

Thankfully, his partner seems to be fine now.

The man in the white coat continued the magic treatment while continuing the conversation.
“It seems we need to subjugate this special individual to ensure the safe collection of eggs… We must consider what grade of adventurer is necessary. By the way, you are an adventurer as well since you were collecting eggs, right? Please let me know for reference, what grade of adventurer are you?”
“I am grade 54…”

Too low!

Or rather, adventurer grades go down that far!?
«I believe there are grades up to 100.»
They divided it up too much!

“…That’s too low to be of any reference…”
“Damn…”
“By the way, I remember you had a grade 3 adventurer identification with you, right?”
“Yes, sir!”

That assistant who said “Yes, sir!” is actually strong—-!!?

“…Hm? Wait a moment? You said you were grade 54, right? How did someone like you manage to escape from the persistent Togords and make it this far?”
“Oh…! Right, I forgot about that!”
The big man, who had slumped over to the floor, quickly stood up.
“We… we were saved! He became a decoy and let us escape! We must send out a rescue request for him!”
“Him? Who exactly is he?”

“I don’t know his name! He’s a silver-haired brat with an arrogant attitude!”
……….. It’s Kamasse, isn’t it?
«Yes, probably Kamasse…»

“That brat was strong! He wielded both magic and a sword… but there were just too many of them! No matter how strong he was, he couldn’t keep fighting against that number of them forever!”

…Anyway, that was as far as I heard from the big man’s story.

Because at that point, I had already started running towards the northern cliff.
«…You’re going to help, aren’t you?»
Of course I am, Omake-sama.

Kamasse is a good guy.

Sure, he pointed his sword at me, spoke rudely, and did some questionable things that made me think he might be a little crazy, especially for a younger girl like me.

But in the end, he even admitted his mistake and apologized to me, even though I’m a cursed child.

He is, a really good guy.

A serious, and a promising adventurer.
A guy like him shouldn’t die, in a place like this.

…And he even treated me, to yakitori!

So I, ran like the wind through the main street of Yoshyanka towards the north.

And just like that, I climbed over the outer wall using [Silverfish] and leaped towards the wilderness.

My destination was the northern cliff, the precipitous cliff facing the sea.

The habitat of the giant bird Togord.

I won’t let him die.

Not this time.
I will protect the human I like!

That was my only thought.

… That was why I didn’t notice.

I didn’t notice the gaze that was fixed on me as I ran out of the town through the outer wall.

And naturally, the ill will concealed within that gaze.
