Ch. 29

“Leonine”

The door is locked and sturdy for now. I shake my head.  I need to get to the castle. Need to release myself of whatever this is…To feed also, as Kiza put it. And I need to find Oana. Maybe we can figure out what is happening. My adventure didn’t answer any questions, but instead left me with more. At least it was eventful…I guess.

My powers are humming through my chest. The bitter tang of power moves past my nose. I crinkle my nose surprised by how strong it smells now. This is starting to feel too much like how it did when I was younger, but different. I need to get to the castle and find Oana, so we can figure out what is happening, and stop it.

I feel him before I see him. That exposed feeling. Even with the chaos of moving wagons, horses, and yelling scouts and guards. Surprisingly, he is near my friends as they saddle up their horses. But his cerulean eyes are facing in my direction. That burning orange flame moving around the sea of blue once again.

I feel a tear drop from one of my eyes from the power, my power, that is flowing through the air. This power is strong, it is not the same and is about to overflow…I need to leave. I need something else to think about…

I meet his stare with as much as a little wave, a shrug, and then a single middle finger.

Oh, the things that can be done with that single finger…

I bare my teeth and snarl. I see a flash of white moving past a wagon. I twist my body and I am off. Following in its steps.

My feet are pounding against the earth below. Crunching leaves with each step. Thankfully the previous rainfall has dried up. No mud being kicked up as I pick up speed. Or I would have fallen for sure, even ate a mouth full of dirt or well, mud. My wind is picking up behind me. Causing leaves to rustle within the trees as I pass.

I reach for my mind again, but it is too loud. The walls now showing cracks to what lays outside of them. Filled with creatures, thoughts, fears, confessions, cravings, duties, and everything in between.

I look around as I pass over a tree stump with ease catching the autumn breeze as I leap over it and gliding a few feet with my own wind. I look upwards. The skies are the bluest I have seen in a while. No rain cloud in sight. Blue. Like the cerulean eyes I can still feel on my back. Exposed.

My eyes shift, and are replaced with impeccable saucers, with feline like pupils. Still colored purple, but near slits against the sunlight. The world around me is becoming precise and crisp. Black fur starts to take over the black sleeveless shirt Devlyn gave me. Different from my beasts form. Almost like velvet, and slick. Any water would just run right off. My pounding feet turning into massive, powerful paws with claws replacing where my fingertips once were. My ears are changing to points with tuffs. I see a flash of Halfy in front of me.

I reach for a tree and throw myself at it. My claws digging into the bark and the tree groans with a snap. I push off of it and launch myself back. A howl rips through the trees in front of me. Sorry Halfy. I can’t focus. I need…I don’t know.

I hear the clapping of the tree as it hits the ground.  I move effortlessly back passed the trees, stumps, and rocks I crossed. I made it about thirty feet before turning back around. My claws clicking against anything they touch.

I see my friends, my companions all gathered on top of their horses. Devlyn in front of all of them on her massive black stallion. Watching every move I made…and make now. All of their eyes move to me, my friends, the scouts, guards, even the horses. I see even a few take a few steps back.

My body slows. I prowl past scouts and guards. My whiskers twitching as the autumn breeze moves through me. Horses kicking and fear in their eyes as I continue. I stop.

I can feel it. That exposed feeling. Over every part of me.

A wampus cat.

A growl bellows deep within me. My head moves like a predator toward him. My body stalking. Fangs moving past my lips. Craving.

A creature whose glare can drain mortal men.

I finally find him. Moving past some scouts trying to calm their horses. A grin on his face.

Last time I checked, you were still a mortal…man…Do we need to make sure? I feel something move along my side. Blending into the darkness of my fur. Hidden. A single shadow.

A sound moves past my fangs. A sound wampus cats are known for. A sound like a woman screaming with every ounce of her soul, one that can make anyone’s skin crawl. It echoes past the camp, the trees, and into the mountains. Every single horse within the camp bucks, some riders falling off, and some wagons shake, except Devlyn’s black stallion.

Devlyn sits on him, her eyes narrowing at me. Watching.

I feel the shadow move down my body, slithering. Blending into me. Obscured. It stops at my long tail that is flicking with annoyance. A screech leaves my mouth as it moves.

Touch me without my permission again and I will rip that pretty stupid head from your body and truly test your mortality.

Vicious, little bat…You don’t want to draw to much awareness…

I snarl, but my attention is drawn elsewhere. Bitterness burns my nose. I break my gaze and look around. My eyes land on Devlyn’s black stallion, missing it’s rider.

I am hit with a force that knocks me off my paws. I feel pressure along my neck. Teeth. Fangs. Tight, but not breaking the skin.

I twist the extra skin on my neck giving me a little leverage and pull myself away. I angle my body to face my opponent. My front paws inching closer to the ground and my backend high prepared to pounce if needed. My tail flicking with stimuli, annoyance.

I am meet with a creature much like myself. Black sleek fur. Strong paws mirroring my posture. Ready to fight. But the eyes are different. Raging like a thunderstorm, gray and brooding.

Devlyn.
