Ch. 3

“Direct Hit”

"You bit me?" He looks at me shocked and then lets out a small cunning grin and his fangs move past his bottom lip.

"You talked about eating me!" I snapped, nearly falling into some leaves at the force I put into those words with my exhausted body. "I told you to let me go."

He pauses for a moment. "I only wanted a taste...” His cerulean eyes now dancing with orange flakes. “I could smell you. I CAN smell you.” His head tilts down to me, analyzing me again. “I was lured and investigated." I resist the urge to smell myself. I probably smell like a slowly rotting carcass. I have been away from the castle for at least a few days. I am assuming he is talking about my power, and the smell that comes with such power…or at least I am hoping.

He is now looking at his finger. "Although you are truly not a bat. Which makes you even more appealing…More appetizing." He chuckles rubbing his bat bitten finger.

I scoff loudly and then wait a moment, waiting for him to start feeling the effects...Stupid cocky vampire.

I see his face change faintly and he stumbles a couple of feet backwards. He immediately looks at me. His eyebrows burrow once more and then he looks at his finger.

I nervously let out a laugh while leaning against a moss-covered tree, I feel faint. "Me? No, I am a totally normal bat.” I pause for a moment trying to catch my shaky breath. “Perfectly normal."

Still a snarky shit even when my life energy is dimmed and drained, at least Devlyn would be proud of that. She wouldn’t be proud that I left myself weak and vulnerable though. But I didn’t have many other options. I feel my head spin.

"I told you to let me go and then you did not. That was a challenge, so I finished it." Coldness left in the air as I finish. I can see my breaths forming clouds with each exhale. The coldness within is breaking through my mental door. What the fuck is happening?  This exchange took so much of me. More than any of the others. My little legs begin to buckle.

He stumbles again, losing his balance. I glance around for my satchel, nowhere to be seen. I noticed a small rock nestled between some leaves.

He is now also using a tree to remain upright, his body getting weaker by the moment. Same, but mine will come back, hopefully... quickly… if I can just feed it...

He looks at me and starts moving toward me with a flash in his eyes, realizing that in fact, I am not a normal bat. He is not moving as quickly as before, which is good for me. I notice that the darkness that surrounded him is moving back to him and disappearing. Vanishing. I use what little I have left in my drained body to grab the rock and throw it at him.

I watch as it pings off his forehead. He groans and falls backwards. He reaches for his forehead and notices, on his fingertips, the tinge of red against the moonlight that is now filling the area, since his darkness is fading more and more. His face shoots back in my direction and he stands up again, moving toward me. "Something wrong?" I mutter out. Did it work? It had to...I feel so brittle, and so cold. Shit.

Finally, he makes it to me and is standing over me. "I...I... feel different." He trails off.

I look at him with the side of one eye, fighting the urge to close them, but say, "Like a mortal...?" I still cannot believe that worked. The knocking on my mental doors is nothing but silence now, but chills run down my wings. Shit. No. This is not any better. Shit.

He looks at me with confusion. "How? I mean, no that is not possible."

I glance at him again, watching his muscles, all his strengths, watching for any sign of pouncing, of an attack. Even though I am not in any position to stop it, at least I can be prepared and close my eyes. The darkness is completely gone around him. The natural moonlight and night surrounding us now.

"How's your forehead?" He reaches for his forehead again, blood drips down the side of his temple. A knot forming where the rock made contact. Nyx, I have good aim as a bat even in this state. "Does it hurt?" I ask knowing the answer.

I watch his face as he can’t decide which emotion he wants to feel the most. I watch him realize that his vampire ways are slowly disappearing, his power withdrawing. We are more evenly matched now, or at least morality wise. The creature within can tear anything to pieces if I let it out to play. Only if... I let it out, but at this rate…I won’t be awake for long.

"No... no... this cannot be. This cannot be happening. How..." He trails off thinking to himself looking at his hands and starting again, "What are you?" He looks down at me, his gaze lingers over me. "Whatever you did it drained you..." A worried look flickers in his eyes and with a blink it is gone.

I can feel my eyes flutter some more, my body pulses. No. NO. Iciness filling my veins. I cannot hold it much longer. I feel the ground shake. Soft fur wraps around me. I smell a familiar smell. The forest and the muskiness of water with a hint of salt. My body becomes weightless. Darkness seems to take over me again, but this time it is different.
