Chapter ninety: What's in your head?

Jamie wanted to protest when her husband helped her into the Cloak and when he guided her through the door to the stable but she didn't. She didn't utter a word of protest when he lifted her into the horse and mounted his as the rode off to the deserted trail that brought back the sting of an arrow going through her shoulder every place she look.

Alexander stopped at a place that seemed familiar to her.

"I know this place" Jamie said out loud.

"I certainly hope so. It's the place you tied me up for hours and forced me to dislocate my shoulder. Now, which direction did you take while you were running away?" Alexander asked her.

Jamie looked around. She knew that she would have taken her right as always but since Alexander started making her question her reality, she couldn't really trust anything, anymore.

Alexander saw her hesitation and he moved closer to her. He grabbed her shoulder and rubbed it in a parallel manner, it was soothing to Jamie.

Jamie felt his stare and that his hazel eyes were telling her to take her time, he would wait as long as it would take her to remember.

"I don't...I don't know" She blinked to refocus her confused mind.

"Come on Monisha; remember.... escaping from me comes as a second nature to you. Just trust your instincts" Alexander reassured her yet she still had her confused face.

Alexander knew he had to try another method.

"What if I told you that you were free to go back home but you have about thirty seconds to leave or I will take back my offer?"

Jamie felt her heartbeat accelerate, was he serious or was he just playing the game of assumption with her?

"Really? I can go home?" Her eyes light up with a little glint of hope. It made Alexander a little bit sad.

"No. It's the one thing I can't give you, darling"

"Oh, okay. I...I always take my right when I am running away from..." Jamie wanted to add danger but she rescinded the word at the last minute.

Alexander spared a smile. He understood perfectly. She didn't like him very much...just his body.

"Okay, let's take right" Jamie concluded at last.

"As usual you are right. You took the right path"

Alexander led the way and she followed right behind until they were slowly walking through the forest in a comfortable silence. The only sounds for distance were birds' noise and the snapping of tiny twigs as they stepped on them.

"You said letting me go home was the one thing you can't give to me, is that right?"

"I can't think of anything I can deny you of at the moment but I guess in the future, I might find it but it would only be for your own good" Alexander's voice was low and gentle.

"But this is now and I have a request. Will you grant it for me?" Jamie knew she was pushing her luck but she had to try.

"Okay. What do you want, Janessa?" Alexander stopped abruptly to give her his undivided attention. It made Jamie just a little bit nervous. He was about to regret telling her that he can do anything for her.

She pulled her peach colored dress for strength as she cleared her throat like a tobacco smoking old man.

"I...I want" She couldn't word the sentence no matter how many times she opened her mouth.

She had her reasons, one of the many was she was alone in a forest with a king fondly called the Devil and he could easily cause her demise and make her disappear without a trace. And no one would hold him accountable.

But deep down, Jamie knew that Alexander wouldn't hurt her but sometimes, fear doesn't listen to reason.

"Janessa, use your words" Alexander used the sentence he always used on Rosemund when she was a child throwing tantrums about a thing or another and he needed to diffuse the situation before his father steps in.

"I don't want the binding ceremony. Cancel it, Alexander....will you cancel it?" Jamie said so fast partly because she didn't want to chicken out.

Alexander didn't see it coming. He looked fazed for a moment before he recollected himself. He blinked to take away the emotions that were beginning to show on his face.

"Hmmm... You mean postpone it or cancel it entirely, Janessa?"

"Cancel it, Alexander" She whispered to him.

Alexander thought about it for a minute or two. It was out of his hand. A promise was a promise.

"Okay, it's cancelled" He started walking again and a surprised Jamie followed right behind.

"Really?" She queried him.

Alexander stopped and looked at her. Her little curved lips begging to be thoroughly kissed.

"I reckoned I shouldn't bind my life to someone whose eyes lit up whenever she thinks about leaving me behind. It's common sense, really and people stay married all the time without the binding ritual"

Alexander waited for her to chip in that she didn't want to leave him behind but she didn't say anything about it.

"But without the binding ceremony, I can't give you a symbol of my house. It's just the rules of Aradale" Alexander hoped she understood what he was telling her.

"I know"

It finally dawned on Jamie that with her necklace gone, she had no identity whatsoever.

"I found something of yours"

Alexander opened his tunic and took out folded small linen and hand it over to her.

"What is this?" Jamie tilted her head to the left to examine the little gift.

"How about you just open it and find out?"

Slowly, she opened the linen to find the little object that was inside. Her lips curled up slightly as looked at his gift.

"The symbol of Namura....you found my necklace" Jamie whispered. It almost brought tears to her eyes. The necklace was the only thing of Namura she still had.

"Sir Craig was happy to return it"

Alexander didn't add he broke two of his fingers before he took it.
