“What do you mean you're going to catch a train?" May asked me, her expression puzzled.

I furrowed my brow, perplexed by her confusion. It seemed obvious to me. "I'm going to catch a train," I repeated, not offering any further explanation.

"Hey, Nick, did you find any new skills?" Keith chimed in, shifting the conversation's focus.

I hesitated before responding, "I did gain some stats for the combat, but my skillset has been limited by the system."

Keith's eyes widened in surprise. "But you were taking down those Mothkin with ease. Did you do MMA or something? Why didn’t you take the other [Skill]?"

"I do have some fighting experience," I replied evasively. In truth, I was going to limit my skills as much as possible. I needed to break through my limits, and I’d only do that by focusing on a few skills, not by amazing hundreds of kills, whereas most players could amass hundreds of skills, granting them a substantial advantage.

With the goal of breaking through to the SSS ranks in the long term, I made a deliberate choice to limit the number of skills I acquired. Selene had discovered that acquiring too many skills fragments control over them and lowers the ceiling for potential achievements.

While some referred to unique characteristics as [Passive Skills] such as resistance to poisons, electricity, or specific spells, I found it more appropriate to call them [Traits] in my case. These traits were part of the system but not universally attainable.

In the past, I encountered a skill like [Homing Beacon] which allowed me to locate North and find my way back to familiar places. While useful, in a world reminiscent of Dante's Inferno, my focus was on acquiring skills that would ensure my survival not only in the near term but also in the long term. If I was going to defeat the [Admin] I needed to break through all of my limits.

On the other hand, specializing in a specific area meant that my skills could potentially surpass their upper limits, as I didn't face the exponential barrier. Aria had often mentioned that if I had learned her [Phoenix] summon, I might have been capable of bringing people back from the brink of death.

In light of my long-term objective, I directed my focus towards the sword in the meantime. I chose to concentrate on what I already knew, honing my skills in that particular area.

I made peace with the fact that I didn’t have to spend my time concocting new combinations from the [Skills] I would acquire, like Selene had, frequently jotting down notes in a little notebook on how she could become just a bit stronger. That woman could probably teach a university course on [Skills].

"Like I said, I won't force anyone to follow me. Your choices are your own," I declared loud and clear once more.

The floor we stood on remained unexplored, but the thought of delving deeper instilled a sense of even greater danger towards what was lurking in the depths. Their options were clear: follow me at their own risk or stay near the surface with their group under Jason, having already leveled up enough with the horde of Mothkin to make returning a bit easier.

"I want to keep going with you," May said, her eyes soft, her hands trembling slightly, but her determination unwavering. I recognized this type – it was a sad reality often witnessed in this world. She wanted to become stronger on her own. She knew that she had to, and she knew she wasn’t strong enough yet to do so.

May had been closely observing me while I fought. I wielded my bat more like a sword than a simple blunt instrument. There was a certain finesse to my movements and decision-making. Although I hadn't divulged much, my intense eyes seemed to contain a storm with a purpose.

'If I follow him, I can learn from him and become stronger,' she said to herself. The group she was with wasn't bad, but May knew she couldn't keep relying on them, especially Willow, to protect her from harm.

"I’d like to come with you too," one of the guys chimed in. I figured I should remember his name. It was Alvin.

It was easy to see there was something unique about me that intrigued him, and he believed that following me would yield great rewards. And while there was a possibility it might not, he considered me a better choice than Jason when it came to understanding and surviving in the world after System Fall.

"Guys? Both of you? Really? I guess I'll have to join in too," Willow stepped forward as well. I waited, in case anyone else wanted to follow, but no one else volunteered. I turned around and began to descend further on the dysfunctional escalators.

"Hey, Nick! I hope we all see each other again!" Jason shouted after me. "Take care of yourselves out there. And once again, it’s not too late to back down. I already told you; the trains have stopped working!"

Without turning back, I simply raised a hand in farewell, muttering to myself, “I hope he survives.”

We partied up.

Title: Party System Unlocked!

Party System Unveiled!

Attention Adventurers!

Exciting news! You've unlocked the hidden feature: The Party System! Join forces with up to four companions to enhance your journey through the perilous world of System Fall.. But heed these cautionary words: do not grow too attached to your party members, for the risks are grave and death is an ever-looming possibility.

With the Party System, you can form a group of adventurers and explore together, pooling your strengths and sharing the challenges that lie ahead. Experience gained and stat progression will be distributed among party members, ensuring that everyone grows stronger as a unified force.

Party Leader: Nick Vandal

Party Member 1: May
Party Member 2: Alvin
Party Member 3: Willow

Leadership Note: Alvin, May, and Willow possess untapped potential but currently lack combat proficiency. With proper training and guidance, Alvin's resourcefulness, May's adaptability, and Willow's magical aptitude can be honed into valuable assets. Encourage their growth, provide skill development opportunities, and foster unity. Lead with wisdom and belief in their potential. Together, overcome challenges and evolve into a formidable team. Best of luck on your journey.

“Heh.” I grinned. “Not completely useless then.”

With that, we continued our descent, the light fading as we climbed down. Each of us picked a different escalator to walk down, and that was probably what saved us.

"Whoosh!"
Another group of Mothkin appeared as we descended the stairs, their glowing purple eyes revealing their position. My newly formed party screamed, and someone swung a sword. I felt the rush of air and instinctively ducked.

"Watch where you’re swinging that! Hit the bugs. Not me!" I barked, before sprinting down the stairs. Another Mothkin appeared in front of me, and I swatted it back without bothering to kill it. With a leap, I landed on the floor and lashed out with a kick.

The stairs were far from an ideal battleground, but because we had each chosen a different escalator to descend, we made it out with minimal damage. Willow even managed to slay one of the moths, impaling it with her sword.

"This one isn't going poof like the ones above," she said, eyeing it warily.

"Oh," I peered closer. "That doesn’t seem like a Mothkin. Let me check what it is…" I opened my notification panel to see which creature I had killed, although I had a pretty good hunch.

[You killed a Ashwing Moth]

"This one is a Ashwing Moth," I informed them. “You don’t want to get attacked by it, it attacks the vitality directly and will siphon your energy too.”

"Wait, how did you do that?" Alvin asked. "Do you have access to some hidden features?"

I cursed under my breath.

"All your kills show up as notifications, right? I just checked the notification history. Anyone can figure that out." With that, I searched for the Ashwing Moth I killed and picked it up by its stiff antenna. Its body still twitched in rigor mortis, and I suppressed the irrational urge to bludgeon it once more. If the System had declared something as dead, then it was dead.

We were now in a corridor, illuminated by square LEDs on the ceiling. It bore no resemblance to Grand Central Terminal, but as a [Hidden Dungeon], it was never meant to be part of it in the first place.

We followed the L-shaped corridor, which opened onto a spacious floor. To our surprise, we discovered a small convenience store built into an alcove in the wall.

Title: A Place To Rest

"Congratulations! You have entered a Safe Zone."

The following information pertains to its functions:

Safe Zones are sanctuaries amidst the chaos, providing a temporary reprieve from the dangers lurking outside.

Within Safe Zones, combat between users is discouraged and hostile entities from outside will be unable to enter.

Safe Zones provide access to essential resources including food, water, medical supplies, and even potential weaponry.

All items found within a Safe Zone are free of charge, meant to assist survivors in their journey. However, excessive hoarding is monitored and may result in penalties.

Safe Zones may serve as temporary bases for users to regroup, strategize, rest, or recover.

Exiting a Safe Zone will subject users to the perils of the world. Ensure adequate preparation before leaving.

Keep in mind: Safe Zones are not permanent. They will eventually deactivate, and prior safety will no longer be assured.

Utilize this Safe Zone wisely to maximize survival potential.

Suddenly, Zagrid's voice came on, as though broadcasting over an intercom, its artificially cheerful tone. "[Congrats, adventurers! You've stumbled upon a Safe Zone!]" The voice echoed, causing everyone to halt in their tracks and glance around.

"[Feast your eyes upon the jewel of the subway: a convenience store in all its modern, pristine glory!]" Zagrid announced, a hint of pride in its artificial tone. "[Just look at those clean lines, the gleaming shelves, and that refreshing smell of newness. A haven amidst the chaos, wouldn't you say?]"

"[But listen well folks!]" Zagrid chimed in once again, "[Everything here is yours for the taking. That's right, you heard me correctly. Free supplies! Isn't that just the best news you've heard today?]"

There was an edge to the bot’s words as it continued, "[But remember, gluttony is a sin. So, while it's all up for grabs, do be mindful. Let's not forget our manners, shall we?]”

After the bot’s broadcast ended, we all looked around inside the store. It was sleek and modern, a symphony of glass and steel. Bright, energy-efficient lights illuminated rows upon rows of neatly arranged products: food, water, first aid kits, and even basic weapons. A contrast to the grimy subway terminal, the store looked like it had been completely untouched by System Fall.

May, looking lost in her thoughts, muttered, "Man, I really wish we could go back up there now and call Jason and his group, but I don't want to face another ambush. I nearly died back there." As if hoping for a miracle, she pulled out her cell phone, finding no reception, just as I knew would happen.

I surveyed the store and then took out a portable stove. Lighting it up, I placed a medium-sized soup pot over it and filled it halfway with water.

"Are you boiling that for some instant ramen?" Willow inquired, a carton of cup noodles in her hand. “I’ll share.”

I had already eaten my fill for the day, but I still needed some energy. "Not this one." When the water came to a boil, I tossed in the dead Ashwing Moth I had brought with me.

"Ew, are you going to eat that?" Willow cringed in disgust. “You don’t have to. I’ll share! Don’t be gross.”

"I'm going to do an experiment experiment. Feel free to boil your own water for the ramen."

I wasn't certain about my end goal, but I had learned that boiling creature parts usually resulted in something useful. After boiling the Ashwing Moth for ten minutes, the water turned a deep purple

Title: Essence Extraction Success!

Attention Nick Vandal

You have successfully distilled Ashwing Moth’s Essence. Resulting in a half a dose.

Only half? I recalled that alcohol could draw out more flavor from ingredients. I found a bottle of cheap vodka on the shelf, opened it, and poured it into the pot.

'If it works for tomato sauce, it should work for dungeon creatures,' I thought.

Ten more minutes passed, and another message appeared.

[System Fall Notification]

Title: Essence Extraction Success!

Attention Nick Vandal,

Congratulations! You have accomplished a remarkable feat within the realms of System Fall. Through your unwavering determination and skill, you have successfully distilled the entirety of the Ashwing Moth's Essence, yielding a full dose of its potent power.

Harnessing the true essence of this formidable creature, any weapon imbued with the Ashwing Moth's Essence will possess a unique ability. Weakly draining an enemy's life, it grants you a subtle yet impactful advantage in combat.

Embrace this newfound source of strength and wield it wisely. The Ashwing Moth's Essence has bestowed upon you a tool of formidable potential, allowing you to tip the scales in your favor as you navigate the treacherous depths of System Fall.

Title: Essence Apprentice:

Attention Nick Vandal
You have accomplished the remarkable feat of distilling the Ashwing Moth's Essence, marking your entry into the realm of essence extraction and have been granted the achievement of Essence Apprentice. As a token of this achievement, you have been granted a small but permanent bonus. Your overall vitality has been subtly enhanced, granting you increased resilience and stamina

“That’s nice. I would have enjoyed the achievement’s effect even without the rest,” I discarded the rest of the moth’s body into a nearby trashcan and carefully poured the concentrated solution into an empty water bottle. Then I drizzled some of it onto my metal baseball bat. The 28-inch silver rod of metal glowed in a slight red hue, absorbing the essence like a sponge before returning to normal.

Deciding to pour more onto the bat, I kept in mind that the System encouraged trial and error. Maybe I would get no success message after emptying the entire bottle, and I would have to catch another Ashwing Moth.

Fortunately, after using up half the bottle, the bat gained a purple tint.

Title: Essence Infusion Success!

Attention Nick Vandal,

Your Aluminum Baseball Bat has been successfully infused with the potent Ashwing Moth's Essence, bestowing upon it the remarkable attribute of [Siphon] to on hit attacks.

I was well aware of how potent the [Siphon] attribute could be for some items. A weapon infused with a skill was a cheap copy, especially at my level. At best, I could tire out my enemies faster now, and a critical hit might cause them to faint.

True wielders of the skill [Siphon], could not only drain someone's life force but also replenish themselves with it. I wasn’t just the healing effect, but the renewing effect of stamina from [Siphon] that would turn almost any battle in my favor.

At higher levels, there was even a sword with a strong [Siphon] skill. Its wielder would get wounded, and once the opponent's guard was down, the owner of the blade would move in for the kill and with a single strike, the wielder would be healed and restored as [Siphon] would suck all the energy out of their opponent.

"So, what did that accomplish?" May looked at me curiously, fascinated. “That thing you were doing.”

I provided her a brief explanation.

"So, if I add this essence to my blade, will it make my sword deadlier?"

"Yes."

"Then let me buy some from you."

I was taken aback. I was going to try to sell it to anyone who wanted it regardless, but the fact that May had offered it by herself was a surprise.

"Well, I thought about it, but a one-sided relationship where we just rely on you isn't going to work in the long term. And getting something for free also makes people less likely to value it."

"I see. What do you have to offer?" I had planned to ask for a fraction of one of her stat points, but since May had suggested the offer to buy it, I was interested in seeing what she had.

"We can trade right? I can offer you some [Dexterity] points."

I waved my hand dismissively, shaking my head. "Points may seem easy enough to trade away, but you shouldn't underestimate their value. As we progress, they become harder and harder to obtain and hold greater significance in the long run."

[System Fall Notification]

Title: Trading Function Unlocked!

Greetings, adventurer! We are pleased to inform you that the trading function within the system has been unlocked for your use. This new feature will allow you to exchange various resources, items, equipment, stats, and abilities.

Choose wisely and consider the potential long-term implications of each trade.

Remember, trading can be a powerful tool to strengthen your weaknesses and overcome challenges. Collaborate, negotiate, and make mutually beneficial exchanges to maximize your potential.

“Oh wow, the bot didn’t mention anything like this being an option.” May exclaimed.

I snorted. "Well, the tutorial guide should have mentioned it." I said the word guide almost like a cuss word.

"Ugh, that Zagrid thing is the worst." May nodded. "But you're right, why didn't he mention it?"

I gave a small smirk. "Think. Why didn't he? These guides, these “managers” aren’t really here to help us."

Before she could respond, Willow called out. "Hey, dinner is ready!"

In the corner of the store, on the thin circular table, she was setting four cups of instant ramen. Alvin was already seated on a stool, disposable wooden chopsticks in his hand.

The sight brought back nostalgic memories of sharing meals over campfires of Ogre meat and crispy Lava Lizard legs with my last companions.

"I also made some for you. Some of us aren't quite as mannerless," Willow sniped at me as I sat down. Unfazed, I joined them for a quick bite of the chicken-flavored noodles.

"You know, this is kind of like a dream for me," Alvin said. "Walking into a store, there's no one there, and you can pick up anything you want for free."

"Yeah, it feels too easy. I feel like the other shoe is about to drop the moment we continue," May said, slurping down noodles slowly and savoring each bite.

I also tried to eat with some manners, feeling mildly embarrassed about how I had attacked freshly prepared food the day I had returned. I had gathered outraged looks and even some other diners asking to have me booted out of my favorite pizzeria.

It's not like they knew that everyone basically the world was getting ready to end, and manners mattered less than eating food while it was still in front of you, I inwardly mused.

"By the way, what did you do by boiling that moth?" Alvin asked.

"It didn’t make me some soup, but it did give me this," I said, holding up the water bottle containing the rolling purple Essence. "May was going to buy it off me, but I’ve made a decision against it.”

"What does it do?" Alvin pondered.

"See for yourself," I handed him the bottle so he could inspect it and let the System inform him about its effects.

Alvin frowned. “Yeah, it’s good, but paying a point for it? That’s kind of steep.”

I laughed. “No, you’re not going to pay a point for it. I don’t do anything for free, but I’m making an exception this time. This is me investing in myself by investing in you, because if you're going to follow me, I need you to deal damage.”

Without any mention of stats or trading, I let them have it.

I continued, "The essence I'm sharing with you today will make your weapons deadlier. It enhances their capabilities, allowing you to deal more damage in combat by applying the [Siphon] effect.”

Alvin's eyes widened as he accepted the vial, examining it with a mixture of curiosity and excitement. "How does it work?" he asked, eager to grasp the mechanics behind this newfound opportunity.

I explained, "To apply the essence, open the vial and carefully smear a small amount onto the surface of your blade. The essence will infuse your weapon, imbuing it with its empowering property, in this case, [Siphon].”

May watched our conversation with growing interest. "But how does the essence interact with the weapon? Is it a temporary effect or a permanent enhancement?"

I nodded at her question. "The essence creates a lasting effect on your weapon. Once applied, it forms a bond with the blade, infusing it in this case with the [Siphon] effect. This enhancement becomes a part of your weapon.”

Willow, who had been observing silently, finally chimed in. "What if we want to remove the essence later on? Can we revert our weapons back to their original state?"

I shook my head, explaining, "Once the essence is applied, its permanent.”

Alvin's eyes widened as he looked at the vial I’d given him. "Let’s take a step back for a second. The [Siphon] effect? What does that do?"

"When your weapon strikes an enemy, it not only inflicts damage but also draws a portion of their vitality, channeling it back to you.” I explained. “It replenishes your own energy, allowing you to endure in battle and strike back with renewed vigor."

May's expression lit up with realization. "So, it's like a natural synergy where each strike basically refunds the energy you spent on it and maybe heals you in the process?”

"Yup. Basically," I confirmed, impressed by her understanding. "With this [Siphon] effect, you'll find yourself able to push yourself in ways you wouldn’t be able to otherwise.”

Willow, ever the pragmatic one, chimed in with a mischievous smile. "Well, I can't share a magic skill like Nick, but I do have ramen! And trust me, that's pretty magical in its own right."
