From today on, I will be working as a guard to the city.

I woke up on the hard bed of the inn.

I looked outside the window, and the sun had not yet risen.

……Okay. Let’s sweat a bit before going to work.

When I went out of the inn, I started my routine training.

I cleared my heart and wielded my sword with all earnestness. I also did not neglect strength training. This daily routine would become the foundation of my defensive power that I will use to protect my friends and the people of the city.

By the time I finished my daily routine, the morning sun had risen and poured down on the city. However, most of the people are still sleeping soundly.

After I taking a shower to clean myself of sweat, I went to work.

When I walked into the guardroom, Chief Bolton greeted me.

“Oh. You’re here. Did you sleep well yesterday?”

“Yeah. I slept soundly.”

“–Ha. Not bad. You drank quite a bit yesterday. It seems that you have quite the alcohol tolerance. It will be worth it to bring you around next time.”

Chief Bolton grinned and stroked his chin.

I looked toward the guard who was standing beside the chief.

“Chief, who’s that guy?”

“Oh, that’s right. I totally forgot. I’ll introduce you.”

Chief Bolton said so and held the shoulder of the guard beside him.

“Sieg, this is your instructor, Lambda. He is a squad leader and will teach you the ropes of being a guard. Well, I don’t think you need to be too worried about it.”

I see.

This instructor is my direct supervisor.

His age is….. Around thirty and a half as far as I can see.

His body is quite slender and has a reptile-like face.

“I’ll be listening to you starting from today. My name is Seig. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

“Call me Lambda. I’m supposed to be your instructor, but I don’t think there’s much I can teach you.”

""

Lambda let out a self-deprecating smile. “Haha.”

“According to what I heard, Sieg is a former B-rank adventurer, right?”

“Yeah, it’s an old story.”

“No, that’s amazing. I’m sure there’s a big difference in our abilities. I was completely different from you when I was at your age.”

Lambda said in a tone mixed with self-deprecation and flattery.

“Well, it’s still the same now.”

“Haa?”

“Hey. Don’t tell me you’ve been depressed since this morning. Don’t trouble this guy too much. If you have time to self-deprecate, then you should only be thinking of training.”

“No, you’re right. Haha.”

As Chief Bolton pointed this out, Lambda deepened his humble smile.

“Okay. Then I’ll entrust him to you. ……Sieg, ask Lambda anything that you don’t understand. If you still can’t solve it don’t hesitate to come to me.”

“I understand”

“Sieg, shall we proceed to your post?”

Lambda bowed to Chief Bolton and brought me out of the guardroom. It happened just a few moments after the door closed.

“….Tch. This is shit.”

A gloomy sound leaked out.

–Huh?

I peeped at Lambda’s profile from the side– His eyes were as fierce as a snake, and his voice carried intense hatred.

“N? What’s wrong? Is there something on my face?”

“N-no. It’s nothing.”

“I was thinking that you might have been annoyed by my cheeky face. Please just spare me from that.”

Lambda’s expression returned to being a self-deprecating smile. The condensed malice that appeared a moment ago had disappeared.

…..Did I make a mistake?
 ☆

I was brought by Lambda to my post.

It was at the front gate of the city.

“What we will do from now on is to conduct inspections. We have to judge if a person who has come to this city is suspicious or not,” said Lambda.

If you let demons and bandits enter the city, you will endanger its people. This job is very important.”

“I see.”

“…Well, I think you understood that even if I didn’t bother to say it. You’re probably thinking that I’m being self-important aren’t you?”

“I don’t think so at all.”

“I wonder if that’s true. In any case, you are still a B-rank adventurer. Don’t you look down on low-class jobs like guards?”

“There are no ranks in occupations.”

“Hmm. Sieg is quite a capable human being. As expected of a B-rank adventurer. Your magnanimity is truly different from a lowly guard like me.”

I did not know how to react to the servility that he let out, so I continued to listen.

“Hey Sieg. Isn’t this the place where you laugh? If you don’t laugh at me, I’ll look like a very miserable man.”

“I’m sorry. I’m not good at laughing.”

I was particularly bad at this kind of amiable laughter.

People often called me unfriendly because of this.

…… Speaking of which, the comrades from the same party told me that it was quite bad. I didn’t even laugh during mission accomplishment parties.

It never appeared on my face, but I myself had fun.

“The story has derailed. We will begin doing inspections. The first thing to check is if people who come to the city have a permit. If they are merchants, they would definitely have it, but some people will make fake permits to get in.” said Lambda.

“However, not having a permit is not a valid reason for turning people away. If you judged that they aren’t dangerous, you can let them enter. However, there is a large chance that demons and wanted men are mixed into the crowd, so you have to be careful. Ask them for their purpose of visit and look through the wanted posters sent by other cities…. Okay? Have you understood everything so far?”

“I’m okay. I have no questions.”

“As expected, you absorbed it quickly. Well, it’s faster to actually try it than to explain it by mouth. Come inspect with me.”

“Yes.”
