Chapter 8: Prince Consort is Coming

Chu Xuanchen took the battlefield and fought with the enemies at the age of 15. He was talented in the military and famous for his intelligence in battle strategy, defeated numerous battles and defended his country from enemies’ invasions. His prominent existence was the reason, countries of the enemy terrified of him, nobody dared to attack the Great Chu kingdom. The civilians had worshipped him as a hero in their homeland, he was the God of War.

Emperor Hongyuan was reluctant to the countenance of his specific demands, however he still needed him to defend the country, thus his wicked thoughts were instantly suppressed.

As long as Chu Xuanchen agreed to marry Yun Ruoyue, the rest cared little about it.

With that, Yun Ruoyue was carried in a bridal sedan into Prince’s Li mansion, without husband and wife’s ceremonial bows three times and she didn’t see him at all.

Yun Ruoyue suddenly remembered, the night before her wedding, father had told her many things. One of her missions was to watch over Chu Xuanchen closely.

So, this was the case, Emperor Hongyuan and Yun Qing had a plan to plant a spy beside Prince Li. The truth was, Yun Qing was pawning her as a chess piece in his political games, not for the sake of her happiness and Chu Xuanchen should have known about it from the beginning.

That’s the reason why he hated her so much.

After a moment, the wedding nanny walked into the hall.”The new bride is here. Hurry, hurry, hurry. The auspicious hours have arrived, time for the wedding ceremonial bows.”

Yun Ruoyue lifted her chin to look outside, and saw two people dressed in bright red wedding robes walking closely hand in hand..

Chu Xuanchen looked stunning in the bright red, he was tall and imposing. His beautiful visage looks more beautiful than any woman’s. He scanned the crowd with cold eyes, then he turned back around to glance at Nangong Rou affectionately, tightened his grip at her and strode towards the inner hall.

The festive music continues to play, non-stop crackle of firecrackers and accompanied by auspicious greetings and congratulations.

The wedding nanny grinned broadly as she stepped forward to hold the bride’s arm and say,”The auspicious hours have arrived, the groom and bride please proceed with the husband and wife ceremonial bows.”

Chu Xuanchen held the bride’s hand and turned to face each other, and at this time, suddenly a woman dressed in red who was watching silently in the corridor walked into the ceremony hall.

That moment when she stepped inside, everyone was stunned. The music bands and sound of firecrackers abruptly stopped. It was so quiet that everyone held their breath and was afraid to make a single sound.

When they saw that woman in a face veil appear, terror overtook the people’s faces as if they were frightened by a ghost in broad daylight.

Today was an auspicious day for Prince Li and Nangong Rou and she was just an unwanted wife. What is she doing here? They sneered inwardly.

This is terribly bad-luck!

When Chu Xuanchen saw her, his reflexes were as fast as a lightning and he already stood in front of Nangong Rou, standing in-between them, as if Yun Ruoyue was a ferocious tigress going to pounce on the meek little white rabbit. He glared at her, and asked, “What are you doing here?”

Yun Ruoyue’s appealing and beautiful body walked closer to him. She was walking leisurely like a mistress of the house taking a stroll in the garden.

Yun Ruoyue’s charming eyebrows rose. “Your Highness, under the law of the Great Chu dynasty. When a husband marries concubines, the concubine has to serve ceremonial tea and pay respect to the first wife, in order to seek for the wife’s consent to be legally married. Your Highness wants to marry Miss Nangong, I, as the Mistress of this manor, and today if I don’t come to the wedding ceremony. I’m afraid the Great Chu people wouldn’t acknowledge this marriage.” Her tone was filled with sarcasm, and the corner of her mouth lifted.

Immediately after, she paid no attention to him and followed with a confident stride to the master’s seating. She sat down on a chair carved out of pear wood, in red dress, her countenance appeared calm and in a dignified manner. The half face-covering veil revealed a pair of intelligent eyes, neither humble or overbearing.

All the guests inside the hall widened their eyes dumbfounded, stoned at the spot when they heard her words loud and clear, the same as an amplifier resounded to the ears.

Does she know who she was talking to? She actually dared to get in their hair. Everyone responded with an exclamation of surprise.

The rumours had said the Prince Consort was ugly and an idiot. Today, she wasn’t like the rumours, in fact, her reasoning and conclusion was logically sound. And it occurs that she neatly countered his questioning.

Translator’s note:

Ha! I’m early again. Do you like the pictures? I like Chinese paintings very much especially Traditional painting. Traditional painting is done with a brush dipped in black ink or sometimes with colour.
