Chapter 67: The Fake Snore is Different From a Real One

The abusive drill lasts until evening, composed of pushups, running laps, and standing at attention, all for purposes unknown to the soldiers.

They have no idea where those torturing ideas come from, which have almost diminished them from vicious death row inmates into lumps of meat out of human shape.

Out of the drill ground, everyone falls flat reluctant to move at all, but then only to be drawn up from the ground by the fragrance of food.

“Dinnertime!” Trailing Gu Nan’s voice is the fragrance of several buckets of food making soldiers stomach grumble.

The three hundred men in training get to enjoy the forbidden guards’ treatments, including oils in their meals.

The bland flavored food to Gu Nan tastes like exquisite delicacy to the soldiers, as they soon dig into their respective bowls, some even scrabbling using their bare hands.

Just like a crowd of starving refugee during a famine.

The scene almost guilts Gu Nan into thinking that she probably maltreated them.

After the meal, covered by sweat, the soldiers shiver in the chilling wind.

Unlike Gu Nan who is a martial artist that can manipulate chi to resist coldness, the soldiers in merely a thin layer of linens soaked wet by sweat can barely withstand the cold weather.

Some even have their lips frozen to be icy white.

Gu Nan frowns at the situation. The only effective clothes against the weather are made of animal furs, too rare to be provided to soldiers who can only make do with armors and rags.

Left as they are now in sweat and not warmed up, the soldiers will get ill soon.

It appears that to keep the training going, she has to prepare warm clothes for the soldiers.

However, it already took a toll on Gu Nan when she requested the king of Qin for the forbidden guards’ rations, clothing, separate military camps and so on, and got reprimanded for the unnecessary demands.

Now, it would be too embarrassing for her to ask for more.

Looks like I have to do the purchase with my own salaries. Wearing a woebegone expression, Gu Nan shakes her head while distressed over her diminishing wealth.

Pulling her cape closer against her body amid the freezing night breeze, Gu Nan glances at the barracks in darkness that the soldiers reside in.

As if calling to mind something, she returns to her own room.

Gao Jin is in his own bed, surrounded by cold air, loud snores and stinky smells.

However, very few are deep in sleep, as they are all on lookout for others and ready to wake up at any time.

Afterall, everyone here is a murderer.

Just when Gao Jin’s eyes almost fall shut, a few thuds of someone moving an object flows into the barrack, following which the door is opened with a screech.

The snores lighten as many have noticed the figure entering the barrack. Yet no one calls it out.

Gao Jin stealthily peeks at the figure under the moon light, and finds out that it is their general.

The General holds a clay basin filled with dry wood.

Glancing over everyone “sleep soundly,” Gu Nan shakes her head and grumbles: “A bunch of inmates can’t even take care of themselves.”

Saying so she lays the clay basin on the ground, takes out two stones and flicks them against each other. As the spark falls into the basin, the fire is lit, warming everyone in the room.

Gu Nan stares at the basin on fire, and suddenly remembers that fire basins were first invented during the three-kingdom period.

Does this count as my invention now? Do I get to own a patent over it?

Shaking off her wild ideas, Gu Nan turns her head around, and notices that the barrack was built loose, allowing winds to breeze in.

Guess I won’t have to worry about air circulation huh.

Upon thinking so, she leaves the room, closing the door behind her, and heads to the next one.

A long while after Gu Nan’s departure, nobody in the room makes a noise, as if everyone is truly unconscious.

Gao Jin stares at the door deeply with a weird feeling in his heart. Is general actually concerned of them?

Finding it funny, he calls to mind his own experience as a soldier in the past, and never once did he encounter a general caring them to such extent.

After a few silent laughters, he wonders that such a general makes him feel quite well.

“Our general is not bad.” In the room with a bonfire warming the surroundings, someone opens his mouth.

“Having a lady stuck with us cruddy men must be inconvenient to her,” another utters.

“I think our general looks pretty.”

“Just beat it. You pay attention on nothing else.”

“Hey, don’t describe me that way. I say she is pretty not by the normal standard!”

“Stop it, you can’t even put together the right words.”

“Hahaha, since the general has gone that far for us, it is not appropriate to keep lookout on each other anymore. Let’s rest early; I don’t want to fall behind on tomorrow’s drill.”

“…”

“Right, it is time to sleep.”

Out of nowhere, the intense atmosphere of everyone on guard of each other disappears, replaced by the real snores.

Smiling, Gao Jin shuts his eyes and falls asleep.
