Chapter 68: Trained into Retards

Second day morning.

Before daybreak, loud sound of gong startles drowsy soldiers out of bed, who then force their sleepy eyes open, hurriedly put on their clothes and armors, and rush out of their room.

They have known the rule that if late, they will have to run laps until there is no strength left for breakfast.

Before the alarm ends, all soldiers have assembled at the drill ground, some still trying to put on their hats while getting into lines.

Different from the first few days when they always complain about the early calls, this time everyone silently stands still in formation.

The soldier who rings the gong returns to the formation, and Gu Nan is yet to arrive.

The soaked clothes from yesterday were not supposed be dried within a night time, yet maybe due to the fire basins placed in the barracks, they are already dry and residual heat lingers on them.

“Ahhhhh~ ~ ~”

A few minutes later, Gu Nan enters the drill ground yawning, shades under her eyes.

She had been delivering fire basins to barracks almost the entire night, and could not get enough sleep before the gong alarms her awake.

“Is everyone here?” Looking left and right, she asks wearily, then leisurely waving her hand. “Guess I am the one being late.”

“Hehehe…” Muffled laughters come from the crowd.

They all know that Gu Nan probably did not get enough sleep last night.

“What are you all laughing at?” Bewildered, Gu Nan furrows her brow only to then realize something and twitches the corner of her mouth.

“I get it, I will run ten laps, no partiality allowed.”

Apparently, she has mistaken the laughter as gloat over her upcoming punishment.

“As for you,” Gu Nan smirks with a sinister expression, delivering chill down everyone’s spine.

You were gloating over it, weren’t you!

“ATTENTION!”

Everyone conceals their smiles, their legs closed, hands pressing against their laps.

“Stand at attention until I am done running.”

Upon saying so she runs away, leaving behind a group of soldiers that can no longer force any laughter out.

Ten lapses of running poses no difficulty to Gu Nan at all, yet waiting for her completion does.

They all have to stand motionless until Gu Nan returns and order them otherwise.

“Damn it.” One soldier grumbles with a gloomy expression.

“Who the hell laughed back there? I will beat you to your death!”

However, someone next to him nudges his shoulder and whispers: “Brother, you were laughing too, weren’t you?”

“Is it too difficult for you to shut up?”

“Hahaha.”

When Gu Nan returns yawning nonstop, all soldiers are already shaking uncontrollably out of fatigue, their legs trembling.

Seeing so, Gu Nan pouts.

That’s not even close!

When she was a kid at school and had to undergo drills, she was once forced to stand still for a whole afternoon, unlike those here barely keeping their pose together.

The only thing out of norm though is that the soldiers are cooperating without any complaint, whereas angers and resentment were common for the first few days.

“Don’t you think I am intentionally looking for your trouble?”

Gu Nan frowns staring at the three hundred soldiers, feeling puzzled.

It has been days of harsh trainings, and yet nobody is throwing a tantrum at her, rendering her plan to build prestige useless.

They were used to be murderers. How in the world did they become such nice guys?

It can’t be like this going on, or the speech and acting I had been preparing would be for null.

That’s not how it works…

The three hundred soldiers shake their head and answers naively: “No! The general treats us well!”

Indeed, she treats them well, considering that all three hundred of them were death row inmates only good as cannon fodders on the battlefield and not worthy of a good meal.

Only this general in front of them would be concerned about their well beings.

Even though they were death row inmates, they can at least tell good person from bad, not to mention that they can be free men once they pass the training, which gives them hope amid all the sufferings.

Oh my, Gu Nan twitches her lips at the response.

Are they trained into retards by me? How can they find it not bad?

She had intentionally intensified the drills to make it more difficult, and yet these people are getting more and more comfortable with it!

Gao Jin at the front notices Gu Nan’s expression, and smiles: “General, if you have anything to say, just say it out loud.”

Upon hearing it, everyone else notices the funny look on Gu Nan’s face as they all smile toward her.

“We are all ears, general.”

It appears that everything prepared beforehand is no longer needed.

Grieving in mind over her lost prestige she has been trying so hard to build, Gu Nan coughs with a stiff expression to draw attentions.

“Then, I will speak straight.”

“Do you know what define a strong army?”

“We don’t!” The soldiers stay motionless standing. Without Gu Nan’s order, no one dares to move at all.

“Some say that it should be strong men and sturdy horses equipped with good armaments, but I disagree.”

“In my opinion, a strong army only needs two types of men,” Gu Nan raises two fingers upon saying so, “those who only move or stop when ordered to, and those who are not frightened by death, able to march forward facing blades and arrows.”

“An army composed of said two men is invincible.”

In the age of cold weapons, there were no instruments capable of mass destruction or weapons significantly superior than others; therefore, when the two armies clash against each other, the one who are more efficient and less scared of death would come out victorious, regardless the strategies their generals pull off.

That can be roughly summarized as fortune favors the brave.
