Chapter 234 Worry

The rescue had been a success! The team’s journey back was dangerous due to the beasts attracted by the commotion that had occurred in the ruined city. Thankfully, the reinforcements that were staying at the outpost managed to meet them in the middle of their journey.

If it weren’t for them, who knew how much longer the rescue squad would have to remain in the wilderness to return to Fortress Three.

The beast stampede was slowing, and was expected to end in around three or four days. It was slightly more than expected, but most of the students had obtained a lot of experience at killing ferocious beasts. The joint operation was a massive success.

However, it wasn’t all smiles and laughter. Of the total number of students sent to the battlefield as backup, a total of thirty-one had died and seventy-seven were crippled. The ones who survived had learned the harsh truth of the battlefield, where a single mistake would cost their lives.

As for Xiang Ning, he would have become a legendary figure if it weren’t for the censorship of both China and the Federation. They had to suppress the news.

The first reason was that it involved the Seven Deadly Sins and the method to turn the beasts berserk. That was censored to prevent someone else from copying the technique and terrorizing the nation again in the future. The second reason was that Xiang Ning was too talented and it wasn’t the right time for the world to learn about his existence. The government had to send out multiple ‘fakes’ to confuse the masses.

As long as Xiang Ning didn’t make it into the headlines again, or if there was another bigger piece of news, everyone would eventually forget about him again. That was why the Federation announced to the world that they had succeeded in creating dimensional rings. Once the news got out, all the relevant news about Xiang Ning sank to the dredges of the internet.

That was the nature of man. They would only pay attention to news that affected them, especially an item like dimensional rings that transcended their technology. A strong human like Xiang Ning would earn some envy and praise from people, but they would eventually forget about him.

A single ring, capable of storing items ten times better and larger than him, however, was what Xiang Ning was up against.

The research team had worked tirelessly and finally increased the storage size to five cubic meters. That was more than enough to satisfy the needs of the masses. Unfortunately, it was still not up for sale, as they still needed to install security measures to prevent illegal substances and items from being smuggled.

It was only a matter of time.

Soon, they announced the date when the dimensional rings would be released to the masses for purchase.

The internet broke that day as everyone searched for information regarding dimensional rings. But that wasn’t all; there was another piece of news that people had picked up on. A famous singer from Azura would be performing at Marsh City, dedicating her concert to the brave warriors that had sacrificed their lives on the battlefield.

She was the famous Annot, the daughter of angels.

A pure and kind angel, she had pledged to help the masses in any way she could as she established the Angel Charity. Through charity, she helped orphans find new homes, provided education to those who couldn’t afford it, and even rebuilt the homes of those that were affected by the invasion. She was the national idol. Her songs were even rumored to be able to cleanse the impurities within the hearts of both martial artists and spiritual cultivators alike, increasing their chances of breaking through.

Thanks to her angelic face, mesmerizing songs, and noble heart, everyone had started calling her the daughter of angels.

The announcement of her performance in Marsh City soon overtook the news of dimensional rings. Everyone knew that traveling between cities was incredibly difficult and expensive, due to the wilderness. Some people had to pay a very heavy price just to watch Annot performing in another city.

......

As the world was clamoring in excitement over both dimensional rings and Annot’s performance, Xiang Ning had been placed into a recovery capsule.

Li Kaihao was standing with Fang Hao, who had just come out from another recovery capsule. “Sometimes I don’t understand him.”

“If you understood him, you wouldn’t have stayed at this shitty place for so long.” Fang Hao stared at Xiang Ning.

“Hoooo… as if you understand him.”

“Want me to request a transfer for you? I can easily bring it up to my father.”

“No thanks. I love this shitty place.” Li Kaihao smiled.

Both of them were silent. Sometimes, certain news was best left unsaid. If Li Kaihao weren’t wearing his military uniform, Fang Hao would have punched him. To think that he had also planned to use his sister to lure his father out for help!

“All of the costs would be borne by the military. If anything happens to Xiang Ning, even if we can’t do anything to the military, we can still do something about you.”

“Of course.” Li Kaihao felt no guilt.

......

Liu Ruoxue, Li Zimo, and Lu Shiyu were consoling Fang Rou. All of them were in front of a glass window observing Xiang Ning’s recovery capsule.

“Don’t worry, nothing will happen to him. Look, he’s recovering in the capsule. As long as he isn’t dead, we can save him,” Li Zimo kindly said.

“Yeah, Xiang Ning wouldn’t want to see you like this.”

“Please return and rest, you’ve been here for two days. You haven’t even slept for a minute!”

Fang Rou vehemently shook her head. Who knew how she was surviving these past two days? The night that Xiang Ning had returned, Fang Rou emotionally broke down when she saw his visage. Thankfully his vitals were normal and there should be no complications if he entered a recovery capsule.

Still, she had stayed by his side from night until morning.

“I’m alright. My heart aches when I don’t see him.” She was afraid of losing him and her hands trembled in fear every time she remembered the day when Xiang Ning had come to save her. She loved him just as much as he loved her. He was willing to sacrifice himself to save her brother, so she could hold her feelings back no longer. She wanted to tell him how much she loves him.

A hissing sound was heard as the door to the recovery capsule opened.

“Brother, how is he?”

Fang Hao saw how concerned his sister was. A jealous thought popped into his head, urging him to toss some chili-infused water into the recovery capsule to see how Xiang Ning would react. “Hey, I was heavily wounded too. Why aren’t you asking how I’m feeling?”

Fang Rou ignored him and rushed into the recovery capsule room itself.

Alright, perhaps that was a bit too much.

But when he thought about how Fang Rou had tried to rescue him and was resolved to fight in the wilderness, he’d long forgiven her. Maybe I should thank Xiang Ning for taking her spot in helping me…. No, no, no! I can’t do that! He’s trying to get together with my sister! Hmph! If you want my sister you have to go through me! His pride as a brother flared up as he intended to ensure that Xiang Ning would be the right man for his sister.

The other three saw that Fang Rou had entered the room. All of them greeted Fang Hao and entered as well. They hadn’t seen how skinny Xiang Ning had been when he returned. They only heard about his return after he had entered the recovery capsule.

That was why all of them gasped when they saw him now. He had been inside the capsule for almost two days and his body was still nothing but skin and bones!
