The battle was a chaotic and messy affair. Had it not been the stealth spell applied on them, no doubt the Undyings would have been cursing at them for not helping.

The simple, but elegant designs on the Undying's village had been all but obliterated by the monster horde. Nine watched with indifferent eyes, as building after building collapsed throughout the ongoing attack.

She knew that should an army ever break through Cosmos City's walls; it would be no less devastating than it was here. To prevent that, she was willing to take the risk to find more protectors for her city. Nine was willing to use whatever she could to prevent such a fate befalling her city. As such, even if she had to employ Undyings to do it, she would do so without hesitation.

Desperate cries and roars filled the air, the sounds echoing repeatedly in her ears. She watched it all with unwavering eyes, taking in the struggles and desperation of man and monster alike. Though she would not save them, she recorded their struggles and their triumphs.

Likely, this was the first taste of hopelessness and death for many of the Undyings here. The unending horde of monsters, the blood and air of despair on the battlefield, watching hopelessly as comrade after comrade perished before their very eyes.

Even Nine herself had not seen anything quite like this before, nor had she ever wanted to. With her strength, she was able to protect those near her, but what about when she was away?

For that reason alone, she would never allow those whom she held dear to be crushed under the wings of her shadow. She would not hold their hand, nor be with them for every step of the way. Sometimes, experiencing it yourself would be your greatest teacher.

No one ever grew within the confines of a glasshouse, free from rain and toil, only accepting good weather.

Unlike Nine, Nocturne watched the scene playing out in front of him with dispassionate eyes. He had been part of battlefields like this countless times, and everyone he knew had already perished and gone from the vestiges of time.

Reminded of the fact, the silver-haired man grit his teeth in hate as he was reminded of what Alixia Lacroix put him through over countless years. She had effectively robbed him of his freedom, his time, and his life. He would never be able to see the people who had been dear to him ever again.

As such, he could not help but feel jaded at the sight of a familiar battlefield before him. He almost felt like he was watching back on his memories as a general for his Empire.

Nine, sensing something wasn't quite right with Nocturne, gently held his hand, snapping him out of his trance.

"Wife, what's wrong?" Nine asked. Her voice would have been impassive to most, but Nocturne could detect the tinge of worry that carried faintly on her words.

He struggled to put on a smile, but felt more like himself, nonetheless. "I'll tell you later."

Nine nodded, continuing to hold Nocturne's hand as support. Though she didn't know what painful thoughts he had now, she would always stay by his side as a comforting presence.

Taking this chance, Nine let out Rainier and Mephisto to play around on the battlefield. She wasn't worried about them being killed, and they could do with some battle experience.

Following suit, Nocturne sent out his two familiars as well, hugging Nine to himself as he was reminded about how those pesky Undyings had ran their eyes all over Nine as if they were peeling her clothes off that perfect body.

He seethed in jealousy but took cold comfort in the fact that Nine was already bonded to him.

Nine raised a brow, but all she saw was the top of Nocturne's head, so she patted the silky-smooth locks gently, smiling when his tense frame eased into a more comfortable state.

°•°•°•?. . . .

Valerius had been searching up and down the streets of Cosmos City for days, but he still couldn't find the person he had been looking for. By right, at this time, the other should still be oppressed by the Baron family.

He had visited bars, visited pubs, lurking around for information, but nothing of such could be found. He had even visited the information den he and many other Undyings frequented in the past, but as an unpleasant surprise, the information joint was nowhere to be found.

He was getting worried. What for, was he sent back in time if not to make use of the information he had already gained? But as of yet, he had nothing to show for all the information he already knew! It was maddening.

Valerius was about to helplessly head back into the Adventurer's Guild to pick up another low-ranked quest, when he stopped in his tracks.

That was him! That was the person who had evaded his every attempt to find him, but he somehow chanced upon him when he least expected it! This was a blessing in disguise.

Lucien tried hard not to stare at the Undying, who cycled through a multitude of expressions on his face. He was reminded of the funny things the other did every time he even caught a glimpse of the Undying.

'I'm a turtle mouse.'

Lucien swallowed down the laugh that threatened to come out. He didn't know what the other wanted, going around the city looking for information on him, but he doubted it was anything malicious. As such, he had allowed his curiosity to bring him in front of the Undying.

"Hello!" Valerius said nervously but attempted to smile confidently. "My name is Valerius. Are you Lucien?"

"Yes, I am," Lucien responded politely, struggling hard to keep the laugh out of his expressions. He kept overlaying the image of the other 'dancing sexily' over the person in front of him. "May I inquire why you're looking for me throughout the city?"

Valerius froze. He didn't expect this response. How could the other possibly have found out that he was looking for information on him when he was being repressed hard under the house of Beverley?

The Undying studied the man in front of him again, having to quickly reaffirm his information. The other man looked well-rested, clean, neat and didn't seem to be stressed at all. Just this alone told him that Lucien was living a life that agreed with him.

But that was strange! According to the information from his past life, Lucien should have been struggling under the oppression of the Beverley's, only to explode and exit the city in a grand and messy manner when they finally went too far, touring the world. he would then achieve and exponential rise in strength and growth as he was being pursued by various factions that tried to kill him.

Valerius had been planning on joining the other on his quest around the world, and become a loyal minion, but what was this?

"Do you know anyone from house Beverley?" Valerius questioned hesitantly. Could it be that this world wasn't the one he knew? Was his presence causing such a flux in the game script?

Lucien's face immediately darkened at the question. His eyes were glacial cold as he pushed up his glasses. "You would do well not to mention that name in this city," Lucien said, his voice holding no earlier traces of warmth or laughter. "Beverley is no longer a noble house and will never again be, with how depleted their numbers are."

Valerius, "???"

The entire house was wiped out?? What happened? This was completely out of his expectations. This meant that all his plans had gone out the window. Losing all hope, he looked at the Lucien dejectedly. He had thought that this was his one chance to earn enough money to pay for his mother's hospital bills, but it looked like he would have to rely on himself and go out hunting.

At this thought, Valerius' expression slowly firmed, but still contained traces of his earlier deject.

Lucien thought that the other was behaving somewhat like a scolded puppy, whose tail and ears wilted when he was scolded. He couldn't help but feel slightly helpless. He was sort of weak around these kinds of people.

Nine's student studied the other, wondering if he too could issue a quest to the other.

"Hmm, do you want to be a magician?" Lucien asked. "I see that you have potential to be a magician. Do you want to learn magic?"

[Class change into a magician]

[Accept | Deny]

Valerius' eyes widened at the sudden windfall. A class change quest! Getting one this early on was almost shocking. In his previous life, the chance to become a magician was the hardest to come by, mainly because all the magicians liked to stay inside to read and research, so there was hardly any chance to get into contact with one.

Hurriedly, he accepted the quest. "Of course!"

Lucien nodded. "Okay, then. Make twenty paintings of twenty different places within the city, then bring them back to me. You can find me at the mage academy." With that being said, he left, his shoulders shaking with laughter as he thought about the things the other did before his Teacher.

Valerius froze. "???" Twenty paintings?? To some, this would be no problem, but for Valerius… he felt like crying. Art had always been his worst subject to date.

Struggling internally, Valerius entered an art shop, looking around as if he was entering a foreign world filled with terror and danger.

The employee behind the counter looked at him, baffled. "May I help you, sir…?"

Valerius flinched.
