Ye Zun looked at Mo Fei, who walked towards him confidently. “We do not walk the same path. We can’t play together.”

Mo Fei laughed, raising his hand and letting it naturally fall on his shoulder, talking to him earnestly as if speaking to a junior. “It’s okay, you can play however you want. But if we are together, with me, you don’t have to worry about failing to clear the level or dying in the game.”

Ye Zun avoided the familiar hand Mo Fei placed on his shoulder. “If you’re this confident, why do you still need to find a companion?”

After being rejected, Mo Fei frowned slightly, and the smile on his face showed he didn’t take it to heart.

“It is very lonely, being alone. I need someone to watch every masterpiece of mine, someone who can understand me.”

Ye Zun bypassed him, saying with a cold tone, “I have no interest in understanding you. It’ll be in your best interest to stay far away from me. Once I find out that you have the intention of attacking, I will kill you.”

Mo Fei stared after his back in disbelief, his lips parted without words falling out. He couldn’t believe that he had been rejected, but instead of being annoyed, a smile reappeared on his face.

“It’s okay, it’s because you haven’t seen my abilities yet. When we clear this level, you will understand.”

Here is another lunatic.

Ye Zun also didn’t know whether it was Demon God’s Amusement Park that prefers such players and therefore attracts such people, or whether anyone who has been in this game for long enough will become such a lunatic.

He continued to walk forward, guarding against Mo Fei who had been following him not too far behind.

If it weren’t for the fact that one person had no chance of winning against him, he wouldn’t have left this security risk to do as he wished.

Suddenly, Ye Zun’s footsteps stopped. There in the misty waters of the lake, a person stood.

Looking at the clothes and hair, it seemed to be Asker, who had disappeared with Chen Qianqian.

“Asker, what are you doing?”

Ye Zun walked quickly into the water, hand grabbing at Asker who was walking towards the center of the lake, as if he was committing suicide.

The body his hand touched was extremely ice-cold, unlike that of a living person at all.

Asker turned his head, and the expression on his face made Ye Zun freeze.

That expression was not scary, very calm, even. It was too calm, as if all hope was lost. There was not a breath of life.

Asker turned over his hand and grabbed Ye Zun’s arm. It was cold and slippery, and he could not break free.

——This isn’t Asker!

The dull eyes that looked like they belonged to a dead man looked at Ye Zun without moving.

Gray skin, loose dry lips, the heavy, undulating air of death. “Why? I just killed myself, I didn’t hurt anyone. Why am I trapped here, being punished over and over again?”

——Is it that one? From five years ago, the first senior who committed suicide by drowning in a lake?

Ye Zun’s eyes widened slightly.

Asker grasped Ye Zun’s arm tightly and walked into the lake with large steps, as if he was going to drag Ye Zun down together.

“Hurry and let go of him, come back up here! He’s not Asker, he’s the spirit trapped here!” Mo Fei, who was standing on the shore, immediately and loudly reminded him.

Even without his input, Ye Zun already knew this, but in the current situation, he couldn’t break free at all.

“Have you been trapped like this, commiting suicide over and over again? Since this time is just a repeat of the last time, why are you in such a hurry?”

The ghost looked at him with his indifferent and dead eyes.

Ye Zun stared into his eyes. “You’ve been trapped here all this time, all by yourself, dying over and over again. There must be a lot of things you want to say ba. When you stood here for the last time in your lifetime, you also had much you wanted to say, but didn’t have the time. At that time, there was no one else here, no one to hear your voice. Now there is. Don’t you feel like letting it out?”

The ghost’s movements stopped. Where they stood, the water level had already reached their waists.

On the shore, Mo Fei took advantage of Ye Zun’s stalling for time and immediately ran to untie the hanging rope from a peach blossom tree, throwing it to Ye Zun and trying to get him so he could pull the rope up. However, the rope was still too short.

Ye Zun turned out his other hand and pulled the ghost’s arm, shivering slightly from the cold.

The ghost looked at him expressionlessly. “I have nothing to say.”

“What about the person you like? You died for that person, do you still remember them now? Don’t you even have the slightest desire to talk to that person? Name, appearance, the experiences you had together, the feeling of liking them, after so long, have you already forgotten that person too?”

The ghost said woodenly, “I remember ah. I think about it every minute, every second. It is because I want to remember, that’s why I wake up from the mud over and over again, returning to the shore to kill myself again and again.”

Tears of blood flowed down the pale and swollen face. “Because I don’t want to forget, I kill myself like this. Because I don’t want to forget, I just think to end things at this moment.”

That numb and dead face instantly became ferocious. He grabbed Ye Zun’s shoulder viciously, glared at him resentfully, and the pain in the depths of his eyes turned into tears of blood. “Do you understand this feeling? Why do you do this to me? I obviously love you so much, I can even die for you. I’ve already proven myself, have you? You’ve never come to see me, not even once, have you? You think of me like a joke, don’t you? Are you laughing like everyone else? It was you who said you liked me first, you who said that you will only like me for the rest of your life. I proved myself for a lifetime, what about you? What about you?”

The black water in the lake began to surge, and the raging waves created were as violent as the sea, drenching Ye Zun’s hair.

Pitch black darkness engulfed the surroundings, and the endless cold pulled him, sinking into the mud together.

“Xuezhang*, there is only resentment in your eyes. There is no love.”

[T/N: senior]

The ghost stood there in a daze, his pained expression frozen in time.

Ye Zun blinked the water on his eyelashes away, facing him solemnly. “Humans are fickle beings. When they say they like someone, when they say they are willing to die, they mean it sincerely. On another day, when they wish to kill the other person, it is also their true feelings. Right now, senior wants to kill that person more than he is willing to die for them.”

“Bullshit!”

“Back then, how did senior come to like that person? Do you really remember?”

In the lake water disturbed by resentment, fragments were reflected in every drop of water, flickering like a revolving lantern.

……

That person laughed in the crowd. By chance, he turned his head to look back. The sun was shining on that face. After the rain, the sky was clear, and his heartbeat jumped when he glanced over like he was casually looking, smiling with his eyes. White flower buds were blooming.

“How do you do this question?” Lame excuses, absent-minded lecturing, but attention was drawn to the ups and downs of their tone and every breath, until there were only two people left in the classroom.

Eyes dared not to look at eyes, eyes looked at eyes without blinking, eyes frantically avoided eyes.

[T/N: sorry for this god awful sentence, I didn’t know how to translate 眼睛不敢看着眼睛,眼睛一眨不眨看着眼睛,眼睛慌忙避开眼睛。it’s just two people being too shy to look at each other ]

No matter where they walked, they can find the eyes belonging to that person as soon as they looked up. The two people seem to have each other on their radar; even through thousands of people, through all obstacles, they can sense each other’s existence.

The buds in the heart swelled one by one. They were singing and blooming in clusters at the tip of the heart.

We were born for each other.

I will die for you, those were not just words.

When the car skidded over, that person ran over desperately and pushed him away. There really was almost a death.

I love you, I love you ah.

When these words were spoken, it was spoken seriously. Preparations were made for an entire lifetime, without reservation, without hesitation.

Just like the jasmine in full bloom in the yard, thinking that it will only blossom until the end of its life in this summer.

When I didn’t have you, when I didn’t dare to expect to be loved by you at first, I would be satisfied as long as I could see your face in the crowd every day, and I would thank the world.

When I had you, why was there more pain than happiness?

When I was in danger, you could die for me without hesitation. Why do you hide in cowardice from the noisy gossip?

“I can’t do this anymore, let’s break up ba.”

Let’s go and die together ah.

“Psycho!”

Am I a psycho? Wasn’t it obviously you who said that if we can’t be together, we will die together ah?

“You scare me. I can’t remember what I loved about you in the first place.”

I also can’t remember what I loved about you in the first place.

In summer, with you, the flowers on the branches, the love in your eyes and heart.

Everything changed too quickly.

……

“I remember.”

The ghost laughed breathily, crying as he laughed. He let go of the grip he had on Ye Zun’s arm and covered his eyes, sobbing with a smile.

“I didn’t die because of him, I didn’t resent him. I did it for myself.”

“It was the only time in my life, I gave my complete love, to my precious love. I wanted to stay forever, live in that moment forever, so I decided to end it.”

“But why? Why didn’t I get to stay there after I died?”

The ghost looked at Ye Zun with bloody eyes. “Don’t they say that you will keep repeating the moment before you die after you’re dead? If you die with love, why is there only a cycle of resentment and pain in the end?”

Ye Zun looked at him quietly, the knot on his throat rolling. “I think, it is because love is like a flower. It is a living thing. You can’t pick it off and wish for it to stay in that moment forever, it isn’t possible. No matter how immortal the dried flower is, it is still just a dead skeleton in the end.”

The ghost who was crying like a child, sobbed with a scrunched up face, aggrieved and wronged. “I only have that one flower, I just want to keep that one.”

The rim of Ye Zun’s eyes were damp. “If senior was still alive and well, maybe there would have been others, ones that bloom more beautifully, ones that are bigger, in abundance.”

“There won’t be. There will never be any more, living or dead, there is no more. For a person like me, all the luck and energy in my life have been spent on that one flower. There will never be one again.”

Ye Zun shook his head. “I used to think the same as senior, believing that I would only be alone for the rest of my life. When I was very young, I thought about my future, how I will live with another person when I grow up, how we will get married to each other, start a family together, just like everyone else; a future with someone I am intimate with. But I couldn’t imagine such a picture.”

This was his past; a young child who found it impossible to imagine the future.

“The truth when I grew up was just as I expected. I don’t have senior’s luck, I have never met such a passionate love like yours. I have never loved anyone, and I have never been loved like this. Unable to love, and unable to be loved. I can imagine senior’s feelings of wanting to stay.”

The ghost did not believe him. “You’re trying to comfort me, aren’t you? We are not the same in any way. Regardless of appearance or personality, my existence only served to be ignored ever since I was a child, there’s only ever been indifference towards me, and as far as the eye can see, there will always be this indifference.”

Ye Zun pursed his lips, his eyes steady and warm. “I’ve read senior’s files. Although you had led a very ordinary life, it was also a warm and happy life without any twists and turns. When I read it, I felt a little envious.”

The ghost froze, frowning in surprise. “Envious, of me?”

He looked at the young man in front of him. With such an outstanding appearance and clean temperament, he must be well protected and loved by many. Life should be wonderful and smooth for him ba, and yet he said he was envious.

It’s like the disgusting artificial words of a millionaire saying he envies the poor.

But those eyes that were clear like a doe’s seem to be stained with the colour of a film of water. Just steadily looking at them brought about a slight sadness. They were very gentle eyes, ones that don’t belong to someone who pretends to be envious as an excuse or belittles the pain of others.

“What do you envy? A lackluster life that repeats itself day after day? Parents who never cared about what the children wanted, who never tried to understand what I was thinking, who only pressured me to follow their step by step instructions? Go to school, get a job, earn money to support the family, get married and have kids as soon as possible. Or do you envy a life that you can see the end of with just a glance?”

Ye Zun pressed his lips together and said calmly, “Senior may not know that not everyone has the opportunity to be as ordinary as senior. I envy the senior who has a pair of parents, who live ordinary but stern lives. This way, when he was a child, he wouldn’t be the subject of people saying it’s okay to bully him, since besides, he doesn’t have a dad or mum anyway.

“Every day, there is someone who wakes you up, who makes breakfast, and the family will sit together to eat and talk, and the child is lectured, scolded or nagged. You won’t be envious when you see other children’s parents giving them rain boots on a rainy day, since you can expect the teacher to call your name next. When you go out to play and forget the time, you will be found. When you are injured, there is someone you can cry to.

“When you go to study abroad, you can call, to quarrel, to say I miss you, to hear concerned questions about whether you have gotten skinnier or fatter, to hear complaints about mum getting more call time than dad.

“As a child, your head would be ruffled by mum and dad. You would hold hands while walking, be hugged, and be kissed on the cheeks and forehead. When you grow up, being close to others will come naturally, and you will be used to physical contact with people. You will greet others naturally, and you will make friends naturally. There will be no disturbance in you when you say thank you, when you say you like them.

“When you develop a crush on someone, you will think about how to get to know the other person, instead of subconsciously retreating in fear, fears that stop you from having intimate relationships with people, never being able to distinguish the boundaries of mixing in with people. You either give it your all, or become alienated and indifferent, never knowing how to gravitate closer.”

The ghost stayed frozen in place, speechless.

Ye Zun looked at him earnestly. “If it is possible, I really want to have an ordinary life like senior’s, with thoughtless parents like yours.”

On the shore, Mo Fei also listened in a daze and laughed briefly, self-deprecatingly. “Putting it like that, this guy is really enviable. But even so, it came to an end because of a failed first love.”

“A failed first love?” The ghost looked at Mo Fei.

Mo Fei watched the ghost with narrow eyes. “Isn’t it? Your problem is actually very simple. You never experienced puppy love when you were in school, so you wanted to do things passionately for your first time.”

The ghost: “……”

Mo Fei put it bluntly, “You simply failed to get a passing grade in ‘love’. If you break up, you can find a better one. Even if you have to have this person, you can work hard and find a way to become better, and when he regrets it, he will come back and beg you. There are so many paths to choose from, and yet you killed yourself?”

The ghost shook his head: “No, it’s not like that! My love, my most precious treasure*, the treasure I gave my life to keep with me. What do you know for you to think you have a say in this, for you to speak insults?”

[T/N: 美好, which is basically ‘the Beautiful and Good (thing) in my life’, I’ll use ‘treasure’ if this word comes up again in the future]

The lake water that calmed after much effort grew turbulent again, more dangerous than before.

Ye Zun glanced at Mo Fei, who provoked the ghost, and didn’t bother to wipe off the droplets on his face.

“Xuezhang, calm down.”

The ghost couldn’t calm down, glaring at Mo Fei and him, agitated. “What do you know? What do you know? The one I love is not something I can just push to another arbitrarily!”

Ye Zun pushed back his drenched hair. “I understand what senior means. I also have treasured moments, moments that I wish time will stop on forever. Such treasure cannot be brought about by switching to other people. In a lifetime, there is only that one moment, only that one person. Just like a toy car you receive in the beginning; maybe other people can give you the same or even better ones, but you don’t want the other better ones, you just want the first, the original one.”

The ghost gritted his teeth, weeping and trembling.

Ye Zun pursed his lips. “I understand, but, senior’s current situation has proved that the method chosen by you cannot preserve your most precious treasure. Although everyone always says that death is eternal, death is not eternal. It only ends every possibility.”

The ghost opened its mouth, gasping for breath, sobbing like a child. “What else can I do? What should I do?”

Ye Zun looked at the boundless plains imprisoned in the peach blossom forest. “Although the flower senior picked has died, there are other flowers on the branches. Although the flowers on the branches will eventually wither with time, when the right time comes, they will bloom once again. There are other people in this world who love you, but because senior never appeared in the future, that treasure was lost.”

He stretched out his hand to the ghost. “Xuezhang, don’t walk into the lake this time. Come ashore with me ba.”

The ghost looked at him in astonishment.

Ye Zun’s eyes were resolute. “I don’t know if the reincarnation cycle really exists, but since senior is stuck in a ghost state, maybe reincarnation really is possible. Now that it has been proven that death cannot keep your treasure, senior should try a new method to get back your treasure ba. Start all over again, perhaps you will have a better outcome this time.”

He took the initiative to dive forward, grabbed the ghost’s hand, and began to walk to the shore.

The ghost didn’t struggle, but the resentful water in the lake grew turbulent as if provoked, persistently flushing them towards the center of the lake.

At this time, Mo Fei had already found several ropes. After tying them together until the length was just enough, he threw them in Ye Zun’s direction.

“Stop talking nonsense with him, get yourself out first! How can it be easy for an evil spirit whose been around for years to transcend*?”

[T/N: letting the soul find peace]

Ye Zun grabbed the rope and tried his best to walk towards the shore against the waves and waves of water that pulled him down.

“Xuezhang, trust me this once ba. I am also like you, I always thought that my entire life would just be this, that other people’s happiness will have nothing to do with me. I will live alone like this forever, so I am not afraid even in the face of death. However, I somehow met a very nice and gentle person. As long as you are alive, as long as you exist, as long as there is tomorrow, there is still hope. Even if you become a ghost, as long as your consciousness still exists, you still exist. Xuezhang, don’t give up on yourself. Xuezhang, come to the shore with me ba.”

In the turbulent lake of resentment, the young man’s voice was scattered and swallowed by waves, his words only heard intermittently.

The ghost slowly remembered that a long time ago, when he was still young, he also imagined such a future.

What kind of person will I fall in love with? Who will I start a family with? What kind of life will I have? Will I be happy?

At that time, he had not yet met that person. At that time, the love that he wanted to save with his death did not exist. However, his dad bought a watermelon after he got off work, exuding a fresh and sweet smell when cut open. His little sister turned on the TV and waited until it was time for her cartoons. Cicadas sang outside the window. In fact, the tedious and boring life, when viewed across time, is also a treasure.

He looked at the person on the shore, the person who was giving his all to pull the rope. Although he was not a good person, the words he said back then might not be wrong.

He just failed at his first love, failed to get a passing grade.

If I can do it all over again, I will study properly.

The strength of the lake was out of control, roaring like the sea, and it was no longer possible to see where the shore was.

Mo Fei’s rope finally snapped in the middle. He clenched his teeth furiously, but he was powerless to deal with what was in front of him.

“Shen Yuan! Shen Yuan!”

Amidst the surging waves, the ghost followed Ye Zun’s direction and worked with him, moving towards the shore.

Innumerable black aquatic plants spread out at the bottom of the cold water, entangling them, pulling them into the deep mud.

The ghost looked back at the resentment that coiled around him. The face that had returned to its former appearance was very calm.

The ‘him’ now really wanted to go ashore, but…

“Thank you. I believe it, a far more treasured existence that you described. Because, I have seen it.”

The ghost broke away from the grasp Ye Zun had around his hand. Pushing Ye Zun towards the surface of the water, he allowed himself to slide deeper into the mud.

Different from the paranoia, resentment and despair that filled his heart when he ended his life last time, this time he was very calm because he thought of the treasured things. Although he really wanted to try the new choice this person told him about, it was alright if he didn’t get to.

His sinking stopped suddenly, and warm fingers tightly caught his hand.

The ghost looked in astonishment.

The young man didn’t give up. After taking a deep breath above the surface of the water, he came back again to pull him upstream.

Tears slid down the corners of his eyes. This time, they were no longer tears of blood mixed with resentment, but the same clear droplets as before.

The truth was, on that day when he was determined to die, when he was gradually being swallowed by the lake, he had hoped that person would appear and pull him out of the water.

However, that person did not come.

The treasure I thought I was desperately trying to keep…was just a failed first love ah…

I’m sorry, it turned out that I resented you.

I’m sorry, I won’t resent you anymore.

In the black water coagulated by death and resentment, a long white snake swam around Ye Zun. Its head was raised high, and the snake licked his face.

Even though his mind was blurred by the impact of the icy water, Ye Zun was still terrified when the snake nudged his head, and he didn’t dare to move.

There was immediately a feeling of familiarity.

Ye Zun himself wondered if the water drowned him enough for him to become a fool, for him to think that this giant python-like snake was like Moros.

Moros was not this big, and moreover, he had left Moros left in the church on purpose this time, and didn’t bring it into the instance.

However, the giant python didn’t attack him. It licked his face like how Moros does, and then wrapped around him, leading them to swim against the waves of resentment and death.

“Moros?” Ye Zun collapsed on the shore, panting continuously like he was a stranded black mermaid.

Drenched black hair, a dripping black shirt, paired with snow-white skin that was as eye-catching as milk.

He opened his eyes and looked around, combing his hair with his fingers and pushing back the wet bangs that blocked his vision, but he still couldn’t find the giant white python.

But who would appear here at such a dangerous time. A snake that would save him, who else could it be but Moros?

That snake was not very affectionate, always appearing and disappearing suddenly, only running back to Ye Zun when he was sleeping.

Ye Zun was always wondering if it was keenly aware of Ye Zun’s fear towards it from him having dropped it twice earlier on, so it believed he didn’t like it. Was this why it always disappeared and never appeared in front of him?

Ye Zun was trying his best to overcome his fear.

He actually, really liked it.

“Thank you, Moros.”

Perched high on the peach tree branch, the snake’s golden eyes stared at the person under the tree, tilting its head.

After being drenched in the death-filled waters, that person’s body exuded a pleasant fragrance. Even if he couldn’t be eaten, a light sniff was also very good.

Although it really wanted to, it felt that it would need to explain why it can suddenly become so big, so it’s better to disappear and hide for a while.

——Don’t you agree, my dear.

……

Ye Zun breathed heavily on the grass and rested for a short while.

The senior was gone, and so was the lake that was as fierce as the sea.

He never once let go of his hand, so in the end, the senior probably came ashore with him ba.

Has he already broken free? If so, that would be amazing.

The surrounding area was still the forest of peach blossom trees, without the lake it was known for, and without a visible Mo Fei. Ye Zun also had no idea where he was now.

The peach trees in the endless forest were dark and scorched. Black clouds billowed in the sky, and it was impossible to tell whether it was day or night.

Probably because it wasn’t real water, but the embodiment of resentment, Ye Zun’s clothes dried quickly. Only a cold feeling seemed to still be attached to it.

He walked along the path in the peach blossom forest.

He didn’t know how long he walked for. The forest seemed to have no end. Just when Ye Zun wanted to stop and rest for a while, a voice suddenly came from ahead.

Not the voice of one person, but of a group of people.

Ye Zun recalled that the scenery of the Hushan campus is very beautiful. Every weekend and holiday, many people would drive to the school for picnics, take wedding photos, or other things.

Even he himself was pretending to be a model for a print advertisement that was shot at the school, and then took the opportunity to approach the ghost stories club.

Ye Zun hesitated for a moment, but still walked in the direction of the voices.

After walking out of the peach blossom forest, in front of him was a wedding scene.

The lawn, red carpet, guest chairs, balloons and flowers have all been prepared.

The lawn was black, the red carpet was scarlet, the guest chairs were the color of old rust, and the flowers were white and red.

A group of people with pale faces and weird smiles were sitting in the guest seats in black and white suits.

Ye Zun stood there, looking at the wedding scene in front of him in bewilderment, speechless by the weird horror that filled his vision.

Music was already being played, a low and ethereal mysterious tune, like the raving of the dead, the sigh escaping from a strangled neck.

The emcee’s smile froze on his face, like the makeup funeral homes paint on a dead person’s face.

The groom’s smile was also painted on. The corners of his mouth seemed to have been drawn with two wrong strokes, and the corners of his lips rose up strangely.

The bride wore a wedding dress, holding a red and white bouquet, waiting there with a happy face, a brilliant smile on her face but revenge in her eyes.

“Let us welcome the newlyweds.”

The bride and groom stood at the end of the red carpet, looking at each other happily.

The guests applauded.

The groom held out his hand to his bride in an invitation.

Confetti and flowers flitted in the air.

The bride looked at the groom, bowed to the sound of music, and threw the bouquet in her hand.

The music began to grow passionate and moving.

The flowers were thrown away and the knife hidden in the hand no longer concealed. The stab was aimed toward the groom’s neck without hesitation.

Blood poured out.

The smile on the face is still there, deeply in love and affectionate, happiness.

Stiffness painted on to last for an eternity.

Eyes full of resentment and poison stared at each other closely.

The bouquet fell to the guests, and a pair of hands stretched out to catch it. The person who caught it was blessed with happiness.

The best man standing on the chair received it first. He lowered his head and sniffed it, smiling as he looked at the lover next to him.

The groom with the bleeding neck grabbed the bride’s hand, still holding the bloody knife, while his other hand seized her neck.

In the swelling music, it was like dancing an intimate tango.

Embracing tightly, sending each other to their deaths, sparing no effort in madness.

The bouquet was passed among the guests.

The people who caught it threw it away in an instant, revealing the murder weapon hidden behind their back, chasing and killing the lover who they were affectionate and loving towards just a second ago.

“Let us celebrate the newlywed’s love and send our blessings.” The emcee on stage performed their duty.

The groom grabbed the bride’s hand, snatched the weapon from her hand, and stabbed her temple with a smile.

The best man caught up to his lover, grabbing her by the hair and slamming her head into the ground.

A guest stood up, picked up the chair he was sitting on, and heavily smashed it into the head of his lover next to him. In the songs of love, every couple embraced each other.

Around every couple, there is massacre.

“My dearest, I love you.” “Love you, I will love you forever.”

“Go on and die ba! Let’s die together ba!“

“We’ll be together forever.” “I promise.”

“Why did you betray me?”

“I only love you.” “Without you, I can’t live on.”

“Liar! Let’s go to hell together ba!“

Ye Zun lips parted, looking in horror at the strange wedding scene in front of him.

Simultaneously loving and blessing each other, and slaughtering with reciprocation.

He covered his ears, shook his head, and stepped backwards.

“Am I hallucinating? What’s going on? What are they doing?”

But nothing went away.

People were being killed, people were killing others.

Blood-stained formal clothes, murdering, escaping, struggling, fighting back.

While scrambling and struggling, one ran to Ye Zun’s side.

The frightened girl grabbed Ye Zun’s arm. “Help me!”

It was not an illusion.

She was covered in blood and by all means should have died long ago, but she was still repeating this story.

The boy’s savage face was already in front of him, with sorrowful eyes.

“Is it him? Is it because of him that you don’t want me?”

The sharp blade changed its course and slashed towards Ye Zun’s neck.

Ye Zun raised his head, and the sharp edge of the blade missed by mere inches.

He touched his neck and saw the faint blood stain on his palm.

The second stroke followed closely.

He was forced to twist his hand and catch it, and in the midst of struggling, he snatched the knife that was sticky with blood and swung it away from him reflexively.

The boy fell to the ground, clutching his neck.

It was too late for Ye Zun, who was in shock and at a loss.

Behind him, the assailant who was wielding a chair jumped and struck him on the head.

Blood flowed down Ye Zun’s hair.

He looked to the side.

The other person grabbed the hair of the girl in the pool of blood, and the flame of a lighter approached her face. He wore a resentful grin.

Ye Zun walked over, yanked his hair, and slashed the sharp blade across his throat without hesitation.

Blood sprayed.

Ye Zun stepped on the lighter that fell to the ground with great force, crushing it.

He lifted the dying girl. Her beautiful but messy hair was scattered, revealing a face burned by sulfuric acid.

Ye Zun looked behind him, all things that could still move, the dead, and the alive were doing everything they could to crawl towards each other.

It’s not the touching sight of wanting to hold the other person’s hand even before passing, a vow made for life and death*.

[T/N: 生死契阔: to be together regardless of life or death]

It is a deep-rooted resentment engraved in the heart, never dying and never ending. Even if I die, I want to drag you to hell.

“We’ll die together ah!“

“I love you ah!“

Ye Zun shoved away the emcee who was saying false congratulations and took the microphone. “Everyone shut up!”

The speaker was kicked to the ground, and the passionate music stopped abruptly.

Only a clear and cut voice transmitted through the microphone.

“I’m telling you all to stop!”

An eerie silence.

In the scene with no order, a place of ruin, everyone was covered in wounds and died a thousand times over.

Ye Zun gasped for breath, pushed away his blood soaked and sticky bangs, looking out at this hell of lovers with clear eyes.

“What are you all doing ah? Have you all gone insane? Did you even remember who was in front of you when you swung the knife? You asked them why they no longer loved you, but have you seen the expression on your face? Do you know how scary it is?”

Every gaunt ghost covered in wounds, their rotting bodies supported by unending resentment, stared at Ye Zun numbly and silently.

“Didn’t you say you love her? Shouldn’t you protect her? Why did you stab her with a knife, why did you use the ugliest and most vicious means to destroy the beautiful face you love?”

“I just met someone, because he didn’t want to forget his treasured love, he would rather kill himself to keep that love from fading forever. But you all, are you going to destroy what was once your treasure with your own hands?”

“If there is no love anymore, if there is hatred to the point of wanting destruction, to have it stop existing, why do you still agonise over it? Can it be that you don’t care?”

“I really can’t understand why love is followed by a massacre? ‘I love you’, it’s such a beautiful thing, why is it followed by words like ‘I will kill you’?”

No explanation.

The dying ghosts had tears of despair and fear seeping from the corners of their eyes.

The once gentle and affectionate lover was also the one covered in scars, struggling with his all to kill her thousands of times over.

“Please, stop this, you’ve been killing for so long, why does love only last for such a short time before fading, but hate can’t be dispelled even with death?”

“You don’t understand? Have you ever loved?” The girl leaned quietly on the chair, and beside her was a man who leaned on her silently.

Both of them were clean and unscathed, not a single hair harmed, only their lips were pale and their faces bloodless.

Her face was melancholy and peaceful, different from the people here.

Ye Zun looked at her, composed. “Do you just blame others for not understanding when you do something wrong? The ones who don’t understand are you guys!”

All the ghosts looked at Ye Zun, silent and resentful.

“Even if this enrages you all, even if I am attacked and killed, I still need to say it. What all of you do, it is not love, it is just possession. That person wasn’t wrong, you all just failed to get a passing grade in love, if there is such a course. You all, you have no capability to learn to love others at all. Every single one of you has failed and needs to retake the exam!”

The girl watched Ye Zun. “The capability to love? Can we learn love? It’s not taught in school, and it’s not taught by parents. It is not just romantic love, familial love, or love between friends, we’ve never been loved.”

She spoke eloquently, fingers gently carding through the man’s hair. “When I face someone I have a good impression of, it’s just the good impression of a friend, and I only feel that the other party doesn’t care about me at all. No matter what it looks like on the surface, perhaps they hate me in the depths of their heart. It’s so strange, even though the other party is clearly a good person, and we like each other because of their gentleness, but I always feel that when they look at me, they have such dislike and disgust, and, it isn’t enough to not like them over this thing. Because I have never been loved, I am used to being rejected and hated, so if they hate me, I also think it is understandable. It must be that I did something that they misunderstood. It is because I am not good enough, doing something wrong without knowing it.”

With tears rolling down her face quietly, she murmured, “Never once did someone respond to me in the slightest, respond to me as I would to them, saying: I also really like Ruan Yu ah. Ruan Yu really is so good. I want to be friends with Ruan Yu for the rest of my life.

“Every time I give my kindness, every time I try my best to express it, I put all my strength into it. But no one has ever responded to me, as if they have no liking towards me. They don’t notice me at all, they don’t care about me.”

Ye Zun looked at her in surprise. “Are you the Ruan Yu who disappeared four years ago? Your good friend Miss Zhuang, she has always remembered you. Now, four years later, she still remembers you and commissioned us to investigate the reason behind your disappearance.”

Ruan Yu stared at him with wide eyes, at a loss. “Zhuang…how can it be? Our relationship has always been ordinary ah.”

Ye Zun looked at the man she held in her arms. “Are you not missing? Why are you here? Who did you kill? You don’t have a boyfriend, right? That day, when you left the lake by the library, what did you encounter?”

Ruan Yu looked down at the person in her arms. “I saw someone crying, crying so sadly, so I wanted to ask him if he needed help.”

Ye Zun also looked at the person in her arms. “Was it this person? But…which one of you killed whom? “

“I didn’t kill anyone. When I met him, he was almost dead. He had taken sleeping pills. He said that his lover was dead because of him, that he didn’t have the courage to meet him, that person never wants to see him again, and that he couldn’t find the path for them to meet.

“I supported him, listening to him talk while we walked. While my heart wanted to save him, while thinking that I had promised to send him to see that person, I was very anxious and conflicted, but the path by the lake was so, so long, and we couldn’t reach the destination no matter how far we walked. The sky has always been like that, neither brighter nor darker, no light, only peach blossoms.

“I looked at him, feeling very envious, envious, confused, afraid, and a little jealous. Although his lover is dead, he is also dead, and the two of them will be together soon ba. But for me, I probably will never meet someone who loves me like this in my whole life. No one will love me. I feel lonely thinking about it.

“However, I still want to send him to his destination. It’s just that no matter how far we walk, we can never reach it. So, it turns out that it’s been four years? I really am sorry.”

Ye Zun looked at her. The knot on his throat rolled, and he didn’t know what to say.

The self-imprisoning cage of the resentful spirit who committed suicide also trapped the passers-by who tried to help him.

In other words, in this caged labyrinth weaved within the peach blossom forest, there were not only the dead, but also the living.

Every undead imprisoned in it adds to the complexity of the maze, making it impossible for anyone to get out.

Ruan Yu looked at Ye Zun. “I’m very tired, can you help me send him to his destination?”

However, that lake has disappeared.

Ye Zun nodded.

He walked over and lent an arm to support the man.

When his fingers touched the other person, the eyebrows and eyelashes of the pale dead man moved slightly, and he slowly opened his eyes.

“Is that you? Do you forgive me?”

Ye Zun followed his line of sight.

On the other end of the bloody and ruined red carpet stood a pale and gentle young man, with an unfamiliar face but a somewhat familiar expression.

The young man walked along the red carpet, step by step, passing through the slaughtered spirits and the wreckage in a sea of blood.

His eyes met Ye Zun’s, and he nodded slightly. “Thank you.”

He stretched out his hand and helped to support the man. “I’m sorry.”

The man watched the young man nervously, tears rolling down as his nose twitched. “Sorry? Do you not love me anymore?”

“Do you only know to run away when you do something wrong?” The young man helped him up, and turned to Ruan Yu standing to the side. “I’m sorry, and, thank you.

The man followed to bow and apologise. His eyes were stuck on the young man, like a defeated dog that would be abandoned in the next second.

Ruan Yu watched them with a small smile. “Have we finally sent him? That’s great, I’m also going back. There are probably still people waiting for me, maybe it’s time to say goodbye.”

The young man assisted the man and looked at Ye Zun. “Next time, I, we, will live well. If there is a next time.”

The three walked in two separate directions.

But this time, everyone should be able to find a path out of the peach blossom forest. No one will be trapped anymore.

The author has something to say:

When I first went to university—I forgot whether it was before or after military training— there were no official classes for a month, but there were many other classes. There were a few classes that were like conversations. The teacher talked a lot about many tragedies that happened in the university, and the storylines were the same: lovers break up, and kill each other.

Although the teacher really wanted to talk about the topic of love, lecture was not good, and I was unable to learn any skills in love. So up to now, I am a single dog, and I don’t understand why some people love so extremely. Probably the teacher themselves doesn’t understand, but just telling us to restrain ourselves, to not show up in the material they teach the next class.

But I think it’s not a matter of restraint and reservation, it’s that human nature and love are too difficult to understand.

People say that true love is like a ghost; more people have heard of it than seen it. On the other hand, some people continue to go to extremes because of this, destroying themselves or others.
