“Are you ready?”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

Sophie and I responded to Elira’s question. Today is the day for the mock battle, as we had planned yesterday. I called out to Sophie first to start the mock battle.

“Let the mock battle begin!”

Elira declared and the mock battle began.

“Lightning triple half enchantment.”

“Double enchantment with ice.”

As soon as the mock battle started, Sophie and I each enchanted. This time, I and Sophie weren’t allowed to use spirits, devils, or beasts in our mock battle. The reason is simple: using them would take the fight out of the realm of mock battle. The same rule will be applied to the mock battle with Elira and the others. Since spirits are also prohibited, I have to extract magic power from the spirit world by myself. I’ll be using most of my parallel thoughts for that.

“Inferno!”

“Inferno!”

I hit Sophie’s magic with the same magic. The result was that I was losing.

“Light Spear.”

“Unlock magic!”

Sophie canceled the light magic spear I fired next. Sophie looked at me strangely as she saw the way I was fighting. The reason why she is looking at me like that is because I have my sword out, but I don’t seem to be trying to get close to her.

In fact, I have no intention of approaching Sophie. The reason goes back to last night.

“I hear you’re having a mock battle tomorrow?”

“That’s the plan.”

I was alone in my bedroom at night when Darki came out of me and started talking to me.

“Maybe spirits, devils, and beasts will be banned?”

“That would be convenient.”

“?”

I didn’t understand what Darki’s line meant. While looking at me like that, Darki began to speak with a bewitching smile.

“When you and Sophia have a mock battle tomorrow, don’t attack her physically when you get close to her.”

“Then I won’t be able to do anything and I’ll lose!”

Darki made a reckless suggestion.

“I think you’ll lose tomorrow for sure. But what do you think the reason is?”

“What? Isn’t it simply the difference in skill level and type of magic?”

Neither of those things have ever beaten Sophie for me. The skill level went down when I evolved…. Sophie may have more than twice as many types of magic as I do.

And I didn’t say this because it’s not confirmed, but I’m probably losing to Sophie who specializes in magic in terms of magic attack and defense.

“That’s why?”

“Eh?”

“Why would that be a reason to lose? Zero-chan, if you are outclassed in the skill level of swordsmanship, then would you definitely lose to an opponent who has also acquired spear, axe, and hammer techniques?”

“No, it depends on the difference in status, tactics, and other skills, so I’m not sure I’ll lose…”

“It is the same in a magic battle, right? You can do whatever you want with tactics and other skills. Fortunately, neither of you is very good at using magic.”

I froze with my mouth wide open. I don’t know if Sophie is bad at using magic too, let alone me? And did you call me Zero-chan?

“Let me show you from the beginning what is important in using magic.”

Then, day after day, Darki taught me how to use magic. All of this made sense to me, but it was a little strange to learn from the beast Darki.

◆◇◆◇

“Fire Arrow!”

“Fire arrow!”

“Cyclone!”

Sophie made my Fire Arrow disappear and created a large tornado with her wind magic to further damage me. When I heard from Darki yesterday, I could see the bad part. Sophie and I used to use too much big and powerful magic in a row. This is also a weakness because Sophie and I have almost unlimited magical power.

The greater the range of effect and power of magic, the longer it takes to activate. That always exists no matter how good you are at magic. And it is faster for me to activate a small magic than for Sophie to unleash a big one.

I ran to bypass Sophie’s cyclone.

“Iceball!”

“Fireball! Release the magic!”

Just because it’s a magic battle doesn’t mean we have to be honest and shoot at each other head-on. As I ran, I fired three ice spells at Sophie, one with reduced chanting and two with no chanting. I used my few remaining multiple thoughts to my advantage. Sophie may have initially tried to counteract them with a fireball, but when she saw that there were three, she used her magic release.

“Waterbomb!”

“……… magic disarm!”

Sophie started to fall behind more and more. If it was really a game of magic only, Sophie wouldn’t have fallen so far behind. This time I didn’t tell Sophie that I would only use magic. In other words, Sophie has to be wary of being approached in an instant by lightning shrink. The reason why I have my sword drawn is also to make her think so.

“Wind spear! Fire Arrow!”

“Damn…!”

Here, for the first time, Sophie took a big step back to avoid the attack. No matter whether the magic is weak or powerful, if it hits you, you will still be damaged. So you have to avoid it somehow.

Up to this point, the battle had continued at my pace.

“Light Spear!”

“Gravity!”

“Ugh…”

My body suddenly became heavy. Sophie must have used gravity magic while avoiding my magic. At last, Sophie started to use her magic for real. The real work is just beginning…
