Chapter 1: My Fiancee Comes Out of the Blue

An angel was sitting in front of my house.

My parents’ business trip abroad coincided with my high school’s entrance exam, so I decided to start living alone when I became a high school student.

I had lived in a house for fifteen years, so suddenly living in an apartment was hard to get used to at first, but after a while I got used to it, and in just half a year I was used to using the elevator to get to the fifth floor.

I also spent my sixteenth birthday in my first apartment all alone….

Today, as usual, school was over and I was about to go back home, thinking that I should really start looking for a long-term job. As I was leaving, I noticed a beautiful girl sitting in front of my house with her headphones on, reading a book with a cover on it.

Nanasegawa Shiori.

She has long, fine, sparkling hair, a beautiful face, a slender body that makes you want to protect her, and clear skin that makes her look like an angel from the heavens.

Most people would look back at her if they passed by her.

If her long hair was swept away with the wind, the whole area would be enveloped in her pleasant scent.

Most people would fall in love with her if they could see her face up close.

When I stand in front of such a beautiful girl, my eyes meet hers.

“You’re back at last.”

I couldn’t feel much emotion in her voice. If I were to use an analogy, I would say that her voice sounded like she was breathing out ice.

With such an inorganic voice, Nanasegawa closed her book, took off her headphones, put them around her neck, put the book in her school bag and stood up.

She stood up and unconsciously tapped the bottom of her skirt.

“What are you doing…?”

A voice full of disbelief comes out of me.

No matter how beautiful the girl is in front of me, if she was suddenly sitting in front of my house reading a book, it would be natural for me to ask a question in such a voice.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

She spoke with a blank expression.

That’s right; she’s in front of my house, so she must have been waiting for me. It’s only natural that she would say that.

If she was waiting for me, it could be interpreted that she had some business with me.

However… She and I are in the same class.

If you have an errand, you don’t have to wait for me here; you could have told me in class or something. I can’t help but think like that.

Why? It’s been half a year since I’ve started high school, and I still haven’t had a real conversation with her, so I guess it would be awkward to suddenly talk to her at school.

It wasn’t just me though. I haven’t seen her talking to her classmates very often either.

I always imagined seeing her sitting on the edge of the seat, wearing headphones, reading a book in an intelligent and cool way.

It’s not that she’s being bullied or ignored; it’s just that she’s expressionless and mute.

However, even though she has no expression and doesn’t talk much, she is extremely popular among the boys.

It’s rumored that she has received more than dozens of confessions in less than half a year since entering high school.

She does look like this though, so I guess it’s only natural.

However, all the boys who have confessed to her have been rejected. That’s how she got her nickname.

『 Cold-Hearted, Merciless Angel 』

The nickname seems to have been given to her because of her ability to calmly analyze her opponents, break down their arguments, and reject their confessions, as well as her angelic appearance.

“What the h**l are you doing in front of my house?”

What does this cold-hearted, merciless angel want with me? Or rather, how does she know where I live?

She took out a letter from her bag and silently handed it to me.

My heart skipped a beat.

Could this be a love letter? A one of a kind letter that belongs to an endangered species in modern society?

No way, no way… But the fact that she came all the way to my house to deliver it must mean that it was.

“Read it.”

As I stood there receiving the letter, I was told coldly.

“Ah, right…”

It feels strange to be given a love letter by her. It’s because she’s normally expressionless and mute.

Normally, when you give a love letter to someone you like, you should be embarrassed.  Your face should turn red, your eyes scurrying around avoiding eye contact, and the fidgeting due to nervousness. But Nanasegawa has none of that.

I looked at the letter with a sense of discomfort and saw my name written on it,

『 Isshiki Kojirou-kun 』.

I opened the letter and read it silently.

『 Isshiki Kojiro-kun, it’s been a long time hasn’t it? It’s been ten years since I last saw you. Kojiro-kun, I don’t think you really remember me that well, but I’ve heard from your parents about how much you’ve grown. I heard that you have grown up very well. Now, I’m sure your parents must have told you about it, so thank you very much for taking care of my daughter. I know she’s a rude girl, but please take good care of my daughter. If it was possible, I would have liked to meet you in person to thank you for your kindness, but I am pressed for time due to a few reasons, so please forgive me for writing to you instead. I will visit you in person when I return to Japan to thank you properly. We are both looking forward to seeing Kojiro-kun again after he has grown up. –Taichi Nanasegawa. Kotoha 』

[ED: “Kotoha” here is meant to be the person’s signature; they don’t use the traditional method of signatures but instead opt to using a seal with the person’s name in Kanji. The stamps are called “hanko” or “inkan”]

“–ha?”

The first word that came out of my mouth after finishing the silent reading was the twenty-sixth hiragana of the 50 hiragana syllabify.

I was given a letter that was more powerful than a love letter.

“No, no. I’m sorry but I can’t keep up with this”

“Why not?”

I’m confused, but she asked me without any hesitation.

“Why not…? I mean… I didn’t ask you anything first.”

I don’t know why my parents didn’t tell me. If I go ahead and call them they’ll say something like, “Congratulations on figuring it out, Surprise!” Yep, knowing them that’s what they’d say.

“And seeing from what’s in the letter, you’re going to be living at my house, right?”

“That’s what it means.”

“No, I’m just going to ask you a simple question. Are you sure?”

“What?”

“You’re going to live with a boy, who’s also a part of your class.”

“There’s nothing wrong with that.”

With Nanasegawa’s words, the autumn wind blew and her long hair swept through the air.

She pulled her wavy hair over her ears and revealed something shocking.

“After all, you and I are engaged.”

“–What!?”
