Lunchtime with my Fiancée and Friend

TL: lime

ED: Spynine01

The stylish school cafeteria is built just like a café.

Our school cafeteria, which was renovated and reopened a few years ago, was originally designed as a cafeteria with long tables and round chairs, but it seems to have been changed before I entered the school to accommodate the large number of students as well as the recent trends.

As a result, the cafeteria’s popularity exploded due to its stylish design. The place was crowded with tons of students entering to visit the cafeteria.

There are a lot of seats so that there’s never a shortage of seats, but even so, there are times when it’s impossible to find a seat due to how crowded it can be. So it’s a good idea to come to the cafeteria early to get a seat.

Although the school cafeteria is very stylish, I can’t guarantee as much for the taste of the cafeteria.

It’s a very hit-or-miss decision. So if you choose a set from the menu, it’s usually a miss instead of a hit.

Therefore, it’s safe to just go ahead and eat a single dish instead. -udon, soba, ramen, fried rice, and rice bowls are the safest choices in the menu.

One of the seven wonders of our school is the question “Why are there so many different set menus in the cafeteria?”

Even though we arrived a little late, the cafeteria was almost full and there was a line forming at the ticket machine.

When I went ahead and stood in line, I saw that the person in front of me was an angel with her headphones on.

“Oh, it’s Shiori.”

I reflexively called out her name, and she turned and looked at me.

I said it pretty quietly, but somehow she heard what I had just said…

She took off her headphones and faced towards the front of the line.

No wait, she’s not responding to me!

“It’s unusual seeing Shiori in the cafeteria.”

I thought it would be a good idea to talk to her if she took off her headphones.

The best topic of conversation would be what I just said, since it would’ve been rude of me to talk about how she dumped someone. I’ll just say something random instead.

“It’s my first time here.”

“I see. Why are you here then?”

“I usually buy lunch at the convenience store. But there was no convenience store between Kojiro’s house and the school.”

“Ah… Sorry. I didn’t think that far ahead. There’s a convenience store nearby, though it’s in the opposite direction from the school.”

“Okay. I’ll keep that in mind.”

After that simple answer, she asks, “Did you watch that?”

“Hmm?”

“Did you watch what happened earlier?”

“Ah, yeah. I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself.”

Shiori asked me about what happened earlier, so I answered honestly.

“I rejected someone again…”

It sounds more like you’ve slashed someone instead of rejecting someone….

I’ve slashed more people again—nope it doesn’t sound

I’m sorry I slashed something quite boring again -degozaro—maybe like that? [TL:Degozaru is a polite expression replacing desu, it is very polite and unless you’re a samurai or a yakuza, you don’t usually use it.]

[ED: In these two lines he’s apparently trying to imitate how a samurai would say these sentences.]

No, all jokes aside, I felt that her voice sounded a little sad in comparison to her usual voice.

“Well, it’s rude to go out with someone you don’t even like, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with rejecting them.”

“It’s not a bad thing to do?”

She turned her back to me, as if my words were bothering her in some way.

“It’s not a bad thing. However, I think it’s a terrible idea to just pretend that you like them though. There’s nothing wrong with being able to say no properly. The Japanese have an aesthetic of just saying yes usually, and that’s a custom that needs to be fixed.”

When I nodded my head and released my opinion, I felt a light expression– a light expression? I can’t tell because she has no expression on her face, but somehow her face seems to have become lighter.

“Okay”

The sad voice from before is gone, but after a simple reply, she asks me a question.

“Do you come to the cafeteria often, Kojiro?”

“Yep, I do. I alternate between the convenience store and the cafeteria depending on my mood.”

“Any recommendations?”

“Recommendations…? Well, I’d say… udon. It’s cheap, it’s fast, and it’s still… edible. Oh, and don’t try the set menus.”

“I see.”

It was Shiori’s turn and she put 1,000 yen into the ticket machine and pressed the button for the 500 yen daily special.

“Oi, no! Did you hear what I had just said? I thought you were going for my recommendation!? Of all the choices, you chose the daily special?!”

“I was just asking about it.”

“You’ve gotta be kidding me.”

“What do you want, Kojiro?”

Shiori asks me, shifting to the side, and I push the button for udon with sarcasm.

“I’ll have the udon that you just refused.”

“Udon in the cafeteria is not always good.”

Where did you get this information from…? It’s your first time here right?

“HAHAHA! You don’t know anything, child. The set menus available here aren’t as good as you’d expect. Moreover, the daily specials are almost like gambling in a sense, you’ll have no idea if what they give you will be good or bad. You’re going to have a terrible lunch today and then you’re going to have to face PE this afternoon.”

“Since I’m the one who bought it, the daily special will suddenly change to a rainbow-colored reservation.” [ED: I assume she’s referring to it like a gacha thing, where rainbow coloured stuff is usually the highest and best tier]

“What do you mean?”

“Everything I buy is delicious.”

“I don’t understand…”

My tray is loaded with Touma’s soba and my udon. As I carried the tray, I look around searching for Touma.

Although I didn’t expect it to be so crowded just because I was a little late… However I guess this is the school cafeteria after all . I’m sure everyone would love to have a hot meal that’s directly available.

“That’s right, Shiori. There are no seats available, you see?”

Touma was reserving my seat, but as far as I could see, I couldn’t find an empty seat for her.

However, Shiori’s still trying to look for a seat, having no sign of impatience on her face.

“Kojiro!”

I suddenly heard Touma’s voice, and he raised his hand coolly to let me know where he was at.

He was sitting in a seat vacant for four people.

“Shiori, would you like to sit with us over there?”

“Sure?”

“It looks like there are no other empty seats after all.”

She scurried around again at my answer. I look around once more, but there are still no extra seats available.

“I’ll join you then.”

“Hmm. Then let’s go.”

We both headed towards Touma’s place.

“—now this is an unusual combination.”

He adjusted his glasses and said that to us both.

“Yeah well, I invited her to share a seat with us since it looks like there are no other seats available.”

“That’s perfectly fine, but…”

Touma stared at the two of us.

“Huh?”

Touma suddenly adjusts his glasses and says,

“Do you want me to disappear or something?”

“Why would I want you to do that? Come on now; let’s eat quickly, the food’s getting cold already.”

I put my soba in front of Touma and sat down next to him. Shiori sat down in front of me.

“Are you sure about this? You don’t want to go and sit next to her?”

He said with a grin on his face.

“Huh? Is it possible that you’ve misunderstood me? This refreshing f*****g a*****e, excellent, super handsome, glasses looking monkey.”

“So long… And are you swearing at me or complimenting me…?”

“Good Grief.” I let out an exclamation about his suggestion.

Then Touma’s eyes fell on Shiori’s choice of lunch.

“You’re quite a challenger, aren’t you?”

“I am a challenger and a champion. A winner who’s sure to win. So I’m confident enough to say that this lunch is sure to be good.”

“I don’t know what your reasoning is, but I can tell Nanasegawa-san is a very confident person.”

Touma eats his soba as his glasses fog up.

“HAHAHA! I’m a prophet, so I can see a few seconds into the future. I can see that your confidence will be shattered and you will be reduced to a loser in a few seconds. Right champion?”

I sipped my udon with a tinge of sarcasm.

“The loser is Kojiro.”

“What? It’s normal udon~? It’s just normal udon~n? It tastes just like the udon you get at the supermarket~ right~? Will you be able to eat it~ or not~?

Shiori says coolly as she tries to stir things up.

“Oh, loser. You’re a frog in a well that doesn’t want to expand his own world and doesn’t know anything about the vast ocean present outside the well. People who only choose safe things and don’t seek change in their life will always be losers for life. You L-O-S-E-R.”

That is a terrible thing to say about a single bowl of udon. Do you have a grudge against udon or something!?

“Well, you do have a point. It’s true that doing the same thing over and over again creates a sort of resistance to it. Seeking out change and experiencing stimulation is what leads to human growth.”(Touma)

“What are you trying to say when you’re the one who’s eating the same soba that you always eat? Don’t try to act cool with your glasses all fogged up.” (MC)

It seems like my words disappeared like soap bubbles… Nobody picked up what I had just said…

“I am standing at the peak, but I’m willing to take on even more challenges without any arrogance. –Whoosh!” (Shiori)

What peak are you currently standing on?

I wanted to ask her about it, but the way she was holding her chopsticks with no expression on her face is just as beautiful as the name given to her: the cold-hearted angel.

We both just stare at her she ate her lunch.

The sight of Shiori having lunch is also quite picturesque. It’s such a picturesque sight that there’s no question whatsoever that we’d pay tons of money just to see an image of it.

She’s a beautiful girl who can also be described as an angel.

“–Ugh!”

Shiori dropped her chopsticks as I heard a voice that I couldn’t believe came from such a beautiful girl. It was as if she had received a major blow.

AHAH! I told you so! There’s no way to reverse it now-reversing such a sight of such a beautiful girl trying to eat without any difficulties– …I want to see that sight, I don’t want to see that sight…

Shiori felt like had a sense of pride to hold up to, so after she managed to swallow the food in her mouth; it looked like she had felt a sense of accomplishment in her life. Then, she immediately fainted like she was an angel with a broken wing.
