A New Spark and a Sudden Visitor

——————————

T/N: Welcome to the new arc, this focuses on the Juka kingdom so Linos is heading back home from when he was bought as a slave.

——————————–

A cold northern wind is blowing through the grasslands. It’s not a freezing, piercing wind that one would expect in mid-winter, but rather a wind that gives the feeling that spring will come soon, especially for the elderly and those with intuition. However, there is an atmosphere in this grassland that doesn’t allow one to feel such things.

A group of cavalry and infantry, clad in jet-black armor, are slowly advancing. With their eerie appearance, the group, from head to toe in armor, gives a strong sense of discomfort to those around them.

Furthermore, the scent carried on the northern wind does not bring to mind spring, but rather the smell of iron. And mixed in with it is the smell of blood. It’s easy to imagine what kind of group they are.

On top of a small hill, the legion stopped marching. Then, one of the cavalry at the forefront slowly removed their helmet, and their beautiful blonde hair shimmered in the wind.

“That must be it…,” one of the nearby cavalry muttered.

“That massive tombstone. There’s no mistake,” the other cavalry answered in a whisper.

“Let’s move forward for now. There’s a high possibility of being attacked. Everyone, advance with caution.”

“If we take control of that spot, we’ll only have to be wary of the west. We must secure it at all costs.”

As they exchanged such conversation, the legion slowly descended the hill.

“Is it true that the Lamaron Empire has finally mobilized their army?”

“Yeah, it seems to have happened a week ago. They’ve made a rapid advance and are closing in on the capital city.”

The ones exchanging this conversation are nobles from the Hideita Empire. It’s been a few years since the Temporary House of Nobles has been called into session.

The Temporary House of Nobles are summoned when something important, such as an invasionn, disaster, or epidemic, occurs in the country. Recently, they were summoned at the time of the late Emperor’s death. Nobles are incredibly sharp-eared. Day and night, they are engrossed in gathering information so that their own families won’t be disadvantaged, or so that they can find something that might benefit them. The House of Nobles, which calls for all the nobles to gather, is the perfect place for them to exchange information.

For some reason, I’m attending this meeting too. Well, it’s more accurate to say that I’m observing it. I’m watching this meeting through the gap in the curtain behind the throne where the Emperor sits.

The content of the meeting is mainly focused on two simple matters.

The first matter to be discussed in the meeting is the birth of the Emperor’s long-awaited male heir. The second matter was that the Lamaron Empire, located south of the Hideita Empire, had moved its army northward and attacked the neighboring country of Juka. The Hideita Empire was considering its response, and if they were to send their own army, they would notify each noble family of their role. And that was the end of the meeting, which ended surprisingly quickly. The Emperor stepped down from his throne.

“This is merely a public event. Lord Linos, the real meeting starts now. I would like you to attend as well.”

“Me, attend?”

“Please, I insist. The Lamaron army has invaded the Juka Kingdom.”

“The Juka Kingdom…”

“That country has been in a state of civil war since the Great Demon King’s descent. While we were observing the situation, Lamaron moved.”

Until now, the Hideita Empire, the Juka Kingdom, and the Lamaron Empire, all being major powers, had fought frequently in the past. However, for the past several decades, they had maintained a delicate military balance and kept the equilibrium. Furthermore, thanks to the leadership of General Karugi, the Juka Kingdom had gradually encroached on Lamaron’s territory.

Initially, when the news of Lamaron mobilizing its army had reached the Hideita Empire, everyone had assumed that they were trying to reclaim lost territory. However, they had unexpectedly continued their advance northward and were now approaching the old capital of the Juka Kingdom.

If the Juka Kingdom was swallowed up by the Lamaron Empire, the Hideita Empire would be struck from the side. Moreover, even their ally, Niza, would be in danger. This was something they couldn’t ignore.

“Lord Linos, you’re from the Juka Kingdom. We’re considering directing our army towards your hometown. It seemed appropriate for you to attend this meeting.”

“I see. Thank you.”

Although he didn’t have any sentimental attachment to the kingdom itself, he had many precious memories of living in the capital with Elza-sama, Master Falco, and Eril. It was true that he had destroyed it all, but it still made him feel uneasy that someone else would trample over it and turn it into a mess. The Emperor’s consideration for his subtle emotions was much appreciated.

Once again, I was taken to a room I had never seen before, accompanied by His Majesty, the leaders of various army divisions, the Prime Minister, and Prince Vairus in attendance. This was the “Imperial Council,” which would determine the fate of the war.

“Well then, I would like to hear the thoughts of the lords. Please speak freely,” said His Majesty.

With this word from the Emperor, the leaders of each army division began to voice their opinions. One opinion suggested that if the Lamaron Empire was advancing their forces, we should swiftly advance south. However, two other opinions suggested that it would be better to wait and see.

“Hmm, this will not do. Well then… my brother-in-law, what is your opinion?” suddenly asked His Majesty, turning to me. The two leaders of the armies looked visibly displeased.

“What is the size of the invading army that has entered Juka Kingdom?” I asked.

“Probably around 3,000,” replied the Prime Minister promptly. As expected, he seemed to have all the information.

“And what about the army that the Lamaron Empire has in reserve in their homeland?” I asked.

“About 200,000,” he replied.

“The problem is this!” Interrupting my words, the southern army leader spoke up. “In order to reach Juka, we must advance along the Lamaron border where there is a dense concentration of 50,000 troops. First, we must defeat this army, and then proceed to defeat the Lamaron army in Juka. However, after that, we will have to fight the 150,000 strong main army from the south. When we consider this, in order to move the army this time, we will need to use almost the entire military force of the empire!”

“That’s why the defense of the empire will weaken!” argued one of the leaders.

“Then are we just going to sit here and watch?” retorted another.

The discussion ultimately returned to its original state, and a long period of silence ensued. I quietly broke the silence.

“Excuse me, Prime Minister, but what is the size of the southern army?”

“We have allocated 50,000 soldiers each for the northern, western, eastern, southern, and imperial defense armies,” replied the Prime Minister.

“Then give us the 50,000 soldiers from the imperial defense army! If we gather noble mercenaries and combine them with our southern army, we can reach 120-130,000 soldiers. Although we will still be outnumbered, we can win,” I proposed.

“Can you win with such a ragtag army? The enemy has a trained army of 150,000 soldiers,” objected another leader.

“We won’t know unless we try!” I replied.

“If we lose, the empire may be destroyed!” warned a general.

“Enough, lords. It seems we won’t come up with a good plan at this rate. You have all worked hard. Return home and rest. We will reconvene for a strategy meeting tomorrow night,” said His Majesty, putting an end to the Imperial Council with a single word.

“Well, this has become quite a mess. I’ll try to come up with a plan for now,” I said to Prince Vairus before finally being released from the meeting.

As I left the castle, it had become midnight. My head was spinning as I rode back to my mansion on Illymo. However, during my flight, Illymo suddenly stopped in mid-air.

“Master, there seems to be a collapsed person down there,” Illymo informed me.

Looking down, a figure of a wizard wearing a hood seemed to have collapsed, and beside them, another hooded figure was desperately taking care of them.

“Leaving them like this isn’t right, let’s go down and check it out.”

“Solayu! Solayu! Wake up! Please, wake up!”

It seemed like a woman’s voice, desperately calling out to the collapsed figure called Solayu.

“Are you okay?”

“Ahh… ahh… aahh…”

The person who was shouting began to back away at the sight of me. It seemed like she was afraid.

Based on my experience, no matter how much I try to explain, misunderstandings cannot be resolved in this situation. So, I went over to the collapsed person and cast a healing spell. However, there was no response.

” Are you hungry or thirsty?”

“……..”

I took out a bento box from my infinite storage and used magic to produce water, and also made hot water.

“Let’s see how things go now?”

Saying that, I got back on my Illymo and headed back to the mansion.

——————

“Linos, Linos, please wake up. Wake up, please.”

I woke up to Rico’s voice. Come to think of it, I had come back, had dinner, took a bath, and went straight to bed. Ah, sorry. Did I oversleep…? When I opened my eyes, Rico, who was neatly dressed, was at my bedside. I suppressed the feeling of disappointment at missing the sight of Rico’s beautiful appearance and got up from bed.

“Please change your clothes quickly. There’s a guest.”

“A guest? Who is it?”

“An envoy from the Juka Kingdom.”

“The Juka Kingdom?”

With a strange sense of foreboding, I changed my clothes and headed to the reception room. There, I saw the hooded duo I had seen last night.
