Chapter 166: An Ounce of Prevention

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

After sending my fairy dragon scouts, Sadakichi and his companions, to Lamaron for reconnaissance, reports began pouring in one after another. It appears that they are stationed in a city called Rainey, located in the northwest of the capital, and are absorbing the armies from various regions. Furthermore, all of them are cavalry, with a total force exceeding 50,000. Moreover, it was revealed that while towns and cities near the border have a considerable number of troops stationed, other towns only have a minimal number of soldiers remaining.

“With this, the possibility of subjugating Daitas Village has vanished,” murmured Matokal as she looked at the map. We were reviewing the discussions from the meeting we held yesterday while analyzing the incoming reports. Thanks to that, I had been staying overnight in my office since last night. Originally, I had planned to take a bath with Alira and Mei, then cuddle with Mei while watching Alira sleep. I had to deal a heavy blow to Lamaron, who had taken away my enjoyment.

“That’s right. It’s difficult to climb those high-altitude mountains on horseback. Their target is not Daitas Village but most likely Agarta or Hideita. Most probably Agarta,” said Layfencee with a smile on his face. He seemed extremely happy because he might be able to participate in the battle.

While we were discussing these matters, Sadakichi appeared.

“Master, a part of the enemy has started moving. Their numbers don’t seem to be large. They’re heading straight towards the mountains.”

“Thank you.”

I shared Sadakichi’s report with everyone.

“That’s a diversion to Daitas Village.”

“No doubt about it.”

Matokal and Layfencee responded to each other like a comedy duo. Were they rehearsing their act?

“In that case, their target is Agarta…?” I asked.

“According to Lord Linos’ recent conversation, their entire army consists of cavalry. Most likely, they will advance their troops to the border and then swiftly use the mobility of the cavalry to attack the city of Agarta, and maybe even the capital,” Matokal explained.

“Mat, hasn’t Lamaron been developing any new equipment?”

“No… they was fully focused on developing armor that resists magic. There was no room for developing other equipment. Besides, it’s impossible to prepare new equipment for fifty thousand soldiers in just a year or so.”

“I see… So, Lamaron’s commanders don’t know anything.”

“What do you mean, Lord Linos?”

I shifted my gaze to Matokal, Layfencee, and the gathered individuals. And then I realized.

“Oh… Mat, the General, and Kunogen are not from Juka, right? It’s understandable that they don’t know. Hey, Theodal and Welnay, you guys understand, right?”

Theodal and Welnay, those who came from the Juka Kingdom, smiled wryly.

“Lord Linos, I’m sorry, but could you please explain in a way that I can understand?” asked Layfence, rubbing his temples.

“It’s quite a difficult situation to invade Agarta at this time.”

“Oh, I see! I should have known! That’s right, that’s right. It’s indeed difficult for Lamaron to attack Agarta,” Layfencee said, regretting his words. Kunogen next to him had a puzzled look on his face.

“General, I can’t fully understand either. What do you mean?”

“Kunogen, you haven’t participated in the battles against Juka… I see. Only once when you were young, right? And it was just a minor skirmish. It’s understandable that you don’t understand,” Layfencee nodded satisfactorily. Matokal and Kunogen looked puzzled.

“Mat and Kunogen, have the General explain it to you later. By the way, when will Lamaron’s army reach the border?”

“Assuming they depart tomorrow… They will likely arrive the day after tomorrow at the earliest, or the day after that at the latest.”

“I see… Then we will set out at noon tomorrow. Make sure to prepare everything.”

“Linos-sama, are you planning to hide troops in the forest near the border and ambush the Imperial Army?”

Matokal looked at me with a concerned expression, as if suggesting that it might not be a good idea.

“No, our target is not the border.”

“Huh…? Aren’t we going to confront the Imperial Army?”

Matokal widened her eyes in surprise.

“Yes, that’s right. We will outmaneuver Lamaron. We will gather all our forces in the city of Agarta.”

“I don’t understand what you’re planning, but Linos-sama, using all our forces is risky. At least leave a defensive force…”

Before Matokal could finish her sentence, I interrupted her.

“In that case, Mat, I’ll leave the defense of the city to you. Immediately select 100 skilled individuals. Alright, that concludes today’s meeting. General, Kunogen, please stay. Let’s have a briefing for tomorrow.”

“But I…”

“To command the defense force, we need an excellent commander. This time, I want Mat, who has the highest command ability, to take charge.”

Matokal reluctantly accepted, and along with the others, she left the room. We then began discussing the plans for the upcoming operation.

That night, I returned to the mansion after a day of absence. As usual, Eril and Alira were either crying or sleeping. I informed my family during dinner that we would be departing from tomorrow noon and that I might not be able to return at night.

After dinner, I discussed various matters with Peyris regarding the kitchen. With the addition of new family members and an increased variety of dishes, we needed more utensils and equipment. We decided to add another cupboard and discussed the specifics. We had already gathered opinions from the main cooks, such as Rico, and I shared my own preferences while finalizing the details.

During that time, Rico and Mei bathed their respective children together, and the others returned to their rooms or spent their time as they pleased.

After finishing the discussion about the kitchen, Rico and Mei came out of the bath, so I also took a bath. Today was the day I would bathe with Considy. Strangely, whenever it was the day for us to bathe together, she would immediately go back to her room after finishing the meal. I found it puzzling, so I decided to ask her about it.

“Umm… It’s just… I need to prepare…”

“Prepare? For what?”

Considy sat cross-legged in the bathtub and shyly began to explain.

“Well… how to wash Linos-sama’s back and… also, the special hair conditioner for styling…”

At first glance, Considy’s hair seemed straight, but it was actually thick and coarse. It was a characteristic of dwarves, and Considy had always admired silky straight hair. She would prepare a special conditioner specifically for bathing with me. That’s why she always made sure to prepare it before we entered the bath.

“It smells the best when it’s freshly made…”

Considy spoke with a modest tone that I couldn’t imagine from her usual self. At that moment, the bath door quietly opened. Considy immediately sank deeper into the bathtub, submerging her body below the surface of the water.

“…May I join you?”

Matokal entered the bath hesitantly. Since Considy nodded slightly when asked if she was okay with it, we decided to bathe together. Matokal quickly washed his body and entered the bath.

“It’s unusual for Mat to join us,” I commented.

“Well… I did consider holding back, but…”

Matokal glanced briefly at Considy. She had returned to her usual cross-legged position, so it seemed she was fine with it.

“I want you to explain what Linos-sama mentioned at lunch today, about why the Empire can’t invade Agarta,” Matokal asked.

“Huh? Didn’t Layfencee explain it to you?”

“I did hear it… but, um… master, could you explain it to me… in bed?”

“You dirty…”

“Well, it’s just… um… since I’m with Considy today… that’s why…”

“You wanted to ask in the bath? Couldn’t you have asked during dinner?”

“Strategic and tactical plans during the planning phase are meant to be kept as confidential as possible.”

“Oh, yeah, I understand. It’s simple. When spring comes, the snow on the Juka Mountains and the Rinoa Mountains melts. That melted snow becomes the springwater that flows down. And the rivers in Agarta swell during spring. Those rivers flow into the Ilveji River. So, the border area experiences increased water levels and significantly wider river widths in spring.”

“I knew the river swelled, but I didn’t expect it to make marching difficult…”

“Lamaron and Hideita probably don’t worry much since the increased water levels don’t cause much trouble for them. However, the river becomes deeper and the current faster than usual, so I think it would be quite challenging to cross it on horseback. Lamaron neglected the necessary preparations.”

As we were having that conversation, Considy slowly stood up, revealing her slightly swollen breasts and her exposed body.

“What’s wrong, Considy?”

“I feel dizzy… Shouldn’t we get out of the bath?”

Matokal and I chuckled and prepared to leave the bath.

“Considy-dono, you’re so lucky.”

“Why is that?”

“You have a beautiful body.”

“A beautiful body? Mine?”

“Yeah. It may not compare to Rico-sama’s, and it doesn’t have scars like mine, nor moles all over the body like Soleil-dono. It’s just a perfectly beautiful body.”

“Thank you.”

Since that day, whenever Considy bathed with me, she would still be shy but no longer excessively hiding her body.
