Chapter 172: Considy and the Taste of Home

Autor: When I was a child, each household had its own “home-cooked taste,” and I always looked forward to being invited to my friends’ homes for meals. Especially when it came to dishes like tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette), the preparation and seasoning would vary from one home to another, creating enjoyable memories of savoring them with delight. Inspired by such nostalgic reminiscences, I decided to write the following story.

————–

One afternoon, at the estate of the Linos family in the Imperial Capital, Considy remained motionless, striking a thoughtful pose.

“Hmm…”

At first glance, she appeared to be battling a headache, but in her mind, she was deeply troubled, though her face was still smooth due to her youthful appearance.

Before her lay a pot, in which a freshly simmered pumpkin stew was placed. Considy muttered softly while gazing at the pot.

“…What should I add?”

The genesis of this predicament can be traced back about ten minutes prior.

Though it was a holiday, there was still plenty of activity after lunch. Mei and Rico took their children to Krumfar using teleportation. They were heading to see Dr. Roni, the family’s physician, to have the children checked for allergies and their overall health. In this world, it was not customary to conduct such extensive examinations on infants, but Linos insisted on it.

“If they have any food allergies, it could be problematic! Just to be sure, have them checked. Also, let’s get their ears and eyes examined properly.”

Rico and Mei were unfamiliar with the term “food allergies” and were somewhat exasperated, but Roni was erudite and also acted as a parenting consultant, so they decided to head to Krumfar.

In addition, Peyris had gone to the university, Gon and Fairi, Soleil had gone to Lamaron, and Matokal and Ferris, Luala had gone to the capital, Agarta, to handle some minor troubles. This left Linos and Considy behind at the estate.

Linos, in high spirits, decided to prepare the dinner’s side dishes on his own, while Considy began experimenting with a collaborative development project in her laboratory with Mei to create a substance that aids crop growth. Finally, when the experimental results were starting to come together, she heard a voice from the dining room.

“Oh hey, Considy! Considy!”

“Yes, what is it?”

Hastily, she moved from her laboratory to the kitchen. Linos was already about to leave the estate.

“Sorry, I need to go to Agarta. It seems an emissary has arrived from Lamaron.”

“Oh, I see. Take care.”

“Ah, and put the preserved nankin taita’s water in the pantry for me, will you?”

“Huh?”

“I said, put the preserved nankin taita’s water in the pantry for me.”

“Nankin taita’s water…? What is that?”

Using all her intellect and abilities, Considy tried to decipher this cryptic message.

“Put it in the pot, so I need to put something in… ‘Mizuya’… What is that? Nankin? Taita? …I don’t know.”

Considy pondered. She closed her eyes and thought deeply, but she couldn’t find a solution no matter how hard she tried.

There was nobody in the estate. Troubled, Considy wondered who might be able to decipher this code. The most efficient way would be to ask Linos himself, but he was meeting with the emissary. She didn’t have the courage to interrupt their conversation and ask him about it.

Rico and Mei might know, but they were taking care of their children. Asking such a question while looking after their kids would be impolite and insensitive, and Considy wouldn’t do that.

Pyeris might know, and so might Ferris and Luala, but when they were busy, they always had a tense atmosphere, making it difficult to approach them. Matokal probably didn’t know. Soleil might give her a sarcastic response. Gon and Fairi were most likely busy as well. Considering all this, there was no one in the family she could ask.

At that moment, a woman’s face came to Considy’s mind. Perhaps she might know. Without delay, Considy headed to that person.

Her destination was the guesthouse in Agarta. There were more people than usual to welcome the emissary, but the accommodations were already prepared, and the staff was just waiting for the guests to arrive. Confirming this, Considy made her way to the woman’s room.

“Oh my, what’s the matter?”

The voice of surprise came from Minshi, the former chief lady-in-waiting of the former Niza Kingdom, who now served as the manager of the guesthouse. Considy immediately asked her the question.

“Sorry, Minshi, there’s something I’d like to ask you.”

“What is it?”

“Well… Linos told me to put ‘preserved nankin taita’s water’ in the pantry. What does that mean?”

“Huh? Please say that again.”

“He said to put ‘preserved nankin taita’s water’ in the pantry.”

Minshi repeated Considy’s words multiple times.

“Could it be that even Minshi doesn’t know?”

“No! That’s not true! I know. I do know!”

Minshi replied with confidence. Relieved, Considy patted her chest.

“So, what does ‘nankin’ mean?”

“Nankin… I’m sorry, but could you please tell me the context in which Linos-sama asked you that?”

“Context? Um, there was a pot in the kitchen… Linos-sama was cooking something.”

“I see! I understand now. It’s the pot. ‘Nankin’ refers to the pot.”

“Eh? They call a pot ‘nankin’?”

“Hime-sama, in the human world, the names of things can vary depending on where you live.”

“Oh, I see. You’re right. That’s true. Linos is originally from the Juka Kingdom… They might call pots ‘nankin’ there. I got it! Thank you. Now, what about ‘taita’?”

“Hime-sama, could it be ‘paitan’ instead of ‘taita’?”

“Ah, paitan… taita… Yes, it might be paitan.”

“In that case, it refers to ‘white broth paitan soup’ made from boiling cow or chicken bones.”

“I see, it’s about the soup. Got it. Now, what about ‘mizuya’?”

“Hime-sama, could it be ‘mizuna’ instead of ‘mizuya’?”

“Mizuya… mizuna… Yes, it might be mizuna.”

“That’s right. So, does it mean to put white broth paitan soup and mizuna in the pot called ‘nankin’? But Minshi, there was already a pumpkin dish in the pot. Would it taste good if I put all those things together?”

Minshi’s expression became even more stern.

“Hime-sama, please understand.”

“What do you mean?”

“Hime-sama, the taste of a dish can vary from household to household. It’s like a family’s signature flavor. Perhaps Linos-sama is trying to pass on the taste of the Basam family and, by extension, the Agarta royal family to you.”

“To me? Why?”

“Hime-sama, when a commoner marries into a family, the lady of the house imparts the family’s signature flavor to the new bride. Though I speak impertinently, given his former status as a slave, he might have been born into a commoner family. Not that it matters if he were from a commoner background. The Agarta King must have seen a scene where the taste of a family is passed down somewhere. That’s why he is now passing on the taste to you, Hime-sama. This is just the musings of Minshi.”

“I see…”

“Hime-sama, you are to inherit the taste of the Agarta royal family and pass it on to the next generation. When Linos-sama’s children get married, and a new bride comes to the family, it will be your role to share that flavor.”

“But Linos won’t have any sons, right?”

“Hime-sama! Really! What are you saying? You will be the one to bear his son!”

“Me?”

“That’s right! The Dwarf tribe, especially the royal family, follows a male line of inheritance. Surely, the child of Linos-sama and Hime-sama will be a son. And if that’s the case, you, Hime-sama, will be the one to pass on the family’s taste to his future bride. That’s why Linos-sama must have shared the taste of the family with you. Please, Hime-sama, I earnestly pray that you give birth to a splendid child.”

“…Minshi, thank you.”

With tears in her eyes, Considy expressed her gratitude. Smiling with a sense of satisfaction, Minshi nodded slowly.

When she returned to the estate, Considy immediately rummaged through the refrigerator and took out some bone-in golden bird meat that she had in stock. She then made a white broth soup and added the meat to the pot. Next, she chopped up some mizuna and added it to the pot as well. Considy let them simmer away.

In the evening, Linos finally returned to the estate.

“Man, I’m tired. I had no idea Lamaron had such abundant mineral resources.”

Muttering to himself, Linos entered the kitchen. There, he found Considy standing in front of the pot.

“What are you up to, Considy?”

“Oh, welcome back, Linos-sama.”

Considy greeted him with a smile, but she was still simmering the pot.

“Oh, you’re reheating the nankin taita as you were told. Thanks.”

“Yes. As you instructed, I’m putting white broth soup and mizuna into this pot called nankin.”

“Huh? What do you mean…? Huh? No, that’s not it… Nankin refers to… the pumpkin. Taita means a simmered dish. And mizuya is the water closet or the pantry. So, it means to put the pumpkin dish into the pantry to cool it down.”

Now it was Considy’s turn to widen her eyes.

“Oh… Then I…”

“Such a waste for the pumpkin dish… Ah, it’s changed color.”

Saying that, Linos stirred the pot with chopsticks.

“This pumpkin is really good though. What a shame.”

While talking, Linos put the simmered dish into his mouth.

“Hmm? The white broth soup is unexpectedly rich… Is this made with golden bird broth…? Well… This is interesting.”

Saying such things, Linos continued to eat the pumpkin dish one after another. Then he looked at Considy.

“Considy, surprisingly, it’s quite good.”

Linos smirked and murmured.

“Shall we make this the family’s taste?”
