Chapter 181: The Savior Appears Hungry

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Mei returned. I tightly embraced her as she buried her face in my chest, crying. Finally, when Mei calmed down, she went over to the three hooded figures and started talking to them.

After a while, Mei returned to me with the three hooded individuals in tow.

“Master… They were the ones who were captured,” Mei said.

Upon hearing Mei’s voice, the three slowly removed their hoods, revealing that they were all female beastfolk. One of them looked quite young.

“You… you’re just a child, aren’t you? How old are you?” I asked.

“I’m 13 years old,” the girl replied.

“To think they were planning to take even a child like her… those bastards,” I felt anger boiling up inside me. According to the girl, she was from an orphanage run by the church. There were both humans and beastfolk living there, but recently, the catfolk and dogfolk were suddenly expelled, and she was locked up in the church. The other two women were regular employees of the church. They were locked up in their rooms and taken away without any explanation. They had no idea about the situation and were shocked upon hearing Mei’s account.

“We can’t leave them like this; they’re in danger,” I said to myself.

I led them to the headquarters of Galby’s defense forces and entrusted them to Craft, who was currently in charge of Galby.

“I’ll explain the situation later, but if any beastfolk, whether they’re sheepfolk, catfolk, dogfolk, or wolfolk, seek help, make sure to protect them. There should be some vacant barracks; hide them there,” I instructed Craft.

Craft immediately gave orders to his subordinates and took action to protect the beastfolk. After ensuring they were in good hands, I returned to the mansion in the imperial capital with Mei and Luala.

“Mei! Mei!” Rico hugged Mei tightly upon seeing her and they both burst into tears. As I watched them, I sent a telepathic message to my family, informing them that Mei had returned and that I had also freed the enslaved criminals. Relief and gratitude were sent back from all of them. Mei, while holding Aliria, repeatedly apologized to her.

“Mei… that’s enough. Don’t blame yourself too much,” Rico said.

“Mei, from now on, don’t act alone. Always consult either me or Linos before doing anything,” Rico added.

“Master, Rico-sama… I truly apologize for everything,” Mei deeply bowed her head.

I embraced Mei again. Just then, a voice came from the back entrance of the mansion.

“Excuse me. I apologize for coming so late,” a voice said.

“Oh, that’s right. Today is the day when Roni comes,” Rico said.

“Roni? What for?” I asked.

“She promised to come and check on Eril and Aliria from time to time,” Rico explained.

“Ah, I see. A check-up. Then let her in,” I said.

Rico guided Roni to the dining room. When she saw me, she gave a small bow.

“It’s been a while, Linos-sama.”

“Indeed, it has been a while, Roni. You’ve been taking care of Rico and Mei all this time.”

“No, I’m their attending physician, so it’s only natural for me to check on the children’s well-being from time to time.”

“I’m sorry, but please continue to do so.”

“Leave it to me.”

With that, Roni took Rico and the others to another room for examination. After a while, they returned to the dining room.

“The children and Rico-sama and Mei-sama all seem to be in good health. Please rest assured,” Roni reported.

“Thank you, Roni. How about joining us for dinner? Will you eat before you leave?” I offered.

Roni gave another small bow.

“Thank you very much. I will accept your kind offer,” Roni replied.

As Rico was going to prepare dinner, I decided to take care of Eril in the meantime. Mei, Roni, and I sat at the dining table, holding Aliria and engaging in casual conversation. It occurred to me that Roni was a doctor, so I decided to share the information about the Crimeana Church’s claim that the beastfolk were the source of an incurable disease.

“Wait, what do you mean?” Roni seemed puzzled.

“I don’t really know the details, but the people from the Crimeana Church claim that the world’s greatest researcher supports their claim. I’m at a loss on how to deal with this. I can’t believe that the beastfolk are causing such a disease. Roni, what do you think?”

“I apologize, but I can’t understand the meaning of what you’re saying, Linos-sama. I’ve never heard such a story, let alone the claim that sheepfolk bile is a cure,” Roni said.

“But… it’s written right here…” Mei handed Roni a medical book sent from the Crimeana Church. Roni opened the book and widened her eyes as she flipped through the pages.

“This is… Sanctuaria…” Roni muttered as she carefully read through the pages. She made various sounds of surprise and awe as she continued reading. Then, she seemed to have found the relevant page and her movements stopped, squinting her eyes.

Flip… flip… flip… She read every word with meticulous speed, and then Roni closed the book with her eyes still closed, looking upwards as if deep in thought.

“Mei-sama…”

Suddenly, while still in that position, Roni spoke softly.

“What did you think after seeing this, Mei-sama?”

Mei looked down.

“Logically, I thought it was flawless.”

Roni closed her eyes and shook her head slowly.

“That’s what I’m worried about, Mei-sama…”

“What do you mean, Roni?”

I asked Roni while she still had her eyes closed. She slowly opened her eyes and looked at Mei.

“Mei-sama, it’s a matter of medicine, you see?”

“Roni-san?”

Mei tilted her head in confusion.

“Don’t you understand yet, Mei-sama? Even you, as a person of your status, you need to think carefully. It’s about medicine. It’s all about medicine,” Roni said.

“Calm down, Roni. What’s going on?” I asked.

Roni approached Mei and grabbed her shoulders with both hands.

“Mei-sama, it’s medicine we’re talking about. Medicine operates on things that cannot be explained by logic. Within medicine, the more something appears logically perfect, the more questionable it becomes, don’t you think?”

“Ah…”

As if something suddenly came back to her, Mei’s eyes widened more and more. Life seemed to return to her eyes.

“That’s right, Mei-sama! That’s how it is! Please wake up!” Roni said enthusiastically.

Mei picked up the medical book again and flipped through the pages.

“I see… I see now… I can’t believe I overlooked something so simple,” Mei realized.

“That’s right, Mei-sama. Do you understand now?” Roni asked.

“Thank you, Roni-san. I get it now. I’ve been deceived. Thank you. You’re amazing, Roni-san, for not falling for it,” Mei said with a smile.

“It’s nothing special. It happens to all of us. I’ve had such experiences too,” Roni replied, returning the smile.

“Um… I’m sorry, but you two seem to be on the same page. Mind explaining it to me?” I asked.

Roni’s expression shifted, and she gave a small bow.

“I apologize for leaving you behind, Linos-sama.”

“No, it’s alright. Don’t worry about it.”

“I’ll explain it simply. Medicine is the accumulation of experience and probabilities.”

“Huh?”

I tilted my head in confusion.

“For example, when you grind the roots of a Shadbo tree into powder, humans fall into a deep sleep. It’s used for abdominal surgeries and such, but we don’t know why Shadbo tree roots make people sleep. Furthermore, in about one out of a thousand cases, they don’t wake up from that sleep. We don’t know why they don’t wake up either. Similarly, with healing magic, we don’t know why chanting that particular spell heals wounds. These are things that have been discovered through repeated practice and experience. In other words, medicine is a field of study based on the accumulation of experiences and probabilities.”

“Um… I still don’t quite get it.”

“I’m sorry. It’s probably because I’m not good at explaining.”

“No, it’s not your fault. It’s my poor understanding.”

“Basically, the contents presented in this Sanctuaria are not based on accumulated experiences. We need to clarify the probabilities to prove this theory. In other words…”

Thanks to Roni’s patient explanation, I finally began to understand.

“I see. I understand now. In hindsight, my predictions were half right.”

“Your intuition was commendable. Linos-sama, I recommend that you send an envoy to the Crimeana Church.”

“Alright, let’s do that.”

Just then, I heard my stomach growling.

“Roni, are you hungry too? Today, consider it a treat. Eat as much as you like before you leave. Do you have any requests? I’ll cook something for you.”

“If possible… some fried chicken…”

“Sure. I’ll make you some Golden Bird fried chicken, enough to fill you up.”

I entrusted Eril to Roni and eagerly headed to the kitchen.

The next day, a special envoy from Agarta Kingdom set off for the Crimeana Church.
