Chapter 187: Public Questioning Session (Part 2)

1 Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

“I see, what you say makes perfect sense,” replied Dr. Imani, the director of the Crimeana Medical Research Institute, in a composed tone.

“Darina-kun,” he called out to Darina, who was sitting next to him.

“You have confirmed the effectiveness of the special drug created by Ms. Clarina. Why don’t we explain the process of that experiment to the people gathered here and have them conduct a replication? Ms. Clarina, please provide the acid you created, and also let everyone know the ratio with the bile of the sheep-beastmen,” he continued.

“Director!” Darina tried to interject, but Dr. Imani gestured to stop him. At that moment, Clarina responded in a flat voice, “Understood.” Darina reluctantly nodded. While observing the two, Dr. Imani continued speaking.

“Now, the problem is this: Kirisrei, Gaisha, and Luroans are contagious diseases. If we conduct experiments among the countries gathered here, there is a risk that these pathogens might leak out, causing great chaos in the nations. It would be wise to choose a country with advanced medical technology to handle this. What do you think?” he asked.

The members exchanged glances, and eventually, Mei spoke up. “We are fine with that. We would be honored to take charge of the replication experiment in our country, Agarta.”

Mei glanced briefly at Linos, who responded with a nod.

“Wait a moment! Agarta is rumored to have been visited by the Great Demon Lord, and it’s a newly established country. I can’t possibly believe that you have an environment where pathogens can be securely managed,” Darina retorted sternly.

Just then, a voice rose from the front row of the cathedral. The owner of the voice raised his right hand and stood up. It was Vairus, the younger brother of the Emperor of the Hideita Empire.

“I am Vairus of the Hideita Empire, younger brother of His Majesty, the Emperor of the Hideita Empire. We are grateful for your protection, Crimeana-sama, as well as for the blessings bestowed upon the Empire by His Majesty and the members of the Empire. Now, regarding the previous discussion, I have heard that the Great Demon Lord that occurred in Agarta has already been subjugated in the Lamaron Kingdom. As for the concern about the experimental facilities, you are welcome to use our Imperial University’s medical research facility,” Vairus explained.

“Vairus-sama, are you sure it’s appropriate for you to decide on such matters on your own? If the pathogens were to leak out, it would be the Empire’s…” Darina tried to interrupt, but Vairus cut her off.

“I have been granted full authority by His Majesty, the Emperor, for this conference. Please consider my words as those of the Emperor of the Hideita Empire, my brother. There should be no problem,” Vairus stated.

“Excellent,” the Pope suddenly exclaimed. “The Hideita Empire is known for having exceptional research facilities, and its scholars are renowned for their enthusiasm in research. If we entrust this matter to the Hideita Empire, there should be no problem whatsoever, right?” The Pope looked at the cardinals flanking him alternately. All the cardinals nodded in agreement, and the Pope directed his gaze toward Dr. Imani’s group.

“Is that acceptable?” he asked.

“Yes, we believe that is acceptable, Your Holiness,” Dr. Imani replied.

Imani respectfully bowed. The Pope looked around the cathedral and continued speaking.

“Is there any other country that wishes to take charge of the replication experiment? Please don’t hesitate to raise your hand…”

“We’ll take on the task!”

“No, please entrust it to our country!”

“Your Holiness! We eagerly volunteer!”

Several countries quickly raised their hands, and a competition of appeals to the Pope began. Needless to say, these were countries strongly influenced by the Crimeana Church. With a gentle smile, the Pope gazed at each delegation from the countries that had raised their hands, looking satisfied.

“What fervent enthusiasm… Very well, then… How about we ask the Yomuan Kingdom to take charge?” he suggested.

“No objections!”

The countries that had raised their hands harmonized their voices in agreement. The representative of the Yomuan Kingdom, who had been standing, saluted the Pope and replied loudly, resonating throughout the cathedral.

“Your Holiness! We are extremely honored to be chosen by you to represent our Yomuan Kingdom! Although we are still inexperienced, we will do our utmost to fulfill our duties! Thank you! Thank you!”

The representative of the Yomuan Kingdom repeated his bows to the Pope. Prompted by his actions, applause erupted from the audience, soon turning into thunderous applause that filled the cathedral. The Pope also nodded approvingly, clapping softly.

When the venue calmed down, the Pope spoke again.

“Now then… Are the Agarta Kingdom, which will conduct the replication experiment using the facilities of the Hideita Empire, and the Yomuan Kingdom, acceptable to undertake the task?”

“Agreed!”

“Agreed!”

“Agreed!”

Multiple candidates, including the representative of the Niza Principality, attempted to speak, but their voices were drowned out by the thunderous applause, cheers, and agreement. At that moment, a voice, far louder than the commotion, reverberated through the cathedral.

“We want to do it too! Let us do it!”

The source of the booming voice was a thin, tanned man wearing a stole. His powerful voice instantly restored silence to the venue.

“… The Sandardi Kingdom. Your country wishes to volunteer as well?” the Pope inquired.

“Yes. Four hundred years ago, our country suffered greatly from the Kirisrei epidemic, almost leading to its downfall. Eradicating Kirisrei has been our country’s long-cherished wish. We would be honored to cooperate,” the representative of the Sandardi Kingdom responded.

“…Very well. Then, the replication experiment will be conducted in the Hideita Kingdom, conducted by the Agarta kingdom, Yomuan Kingdom, and Sandardi Kingdom. Is that acceptable?” the Pope asked in a calm and gentle voice. Applause resounded from the venue, signifying agreement. The Pope raised both hands to eye level, and the applause gradually ceased, returning the venue to silence.

The Pope leaned forward slightly, addressing Mei with his voice.

“Queen of Agarta, please continue.”

“While I appreciate your words, perhaps we could conduct experiments in a few more locations…” Mei’s words were interrupted by a barrage of boos and angry shouts from the audience. I stopped taking notes and stood up to try to silence the chaotic crowd. However, with just a few words from the Pope, the clamor subsided.

“Quiet, please. Everyone, be silent. I request silence. Queen of Agarta, please continue.”

Mei looked toward me as I turned my gaze to the Pope. I shook my head slowly and then nodded. I sat back down and prepared to resume taking notes.

“…Thank you very much. Now, regarding the replication experiment, I would like to seek everyone’s wisdom. In Sanctuary, it is mentioned that Kirisrei, Gaisha, and Luroans are found in the dog-beastmen, cat-beastmen, and wolf-beastmen, respectively, through their body fluids. We have identified a total of 15 patients who are infected with these diseases, according to each case. The most challenging issue is how to infect the beastmen with the body fluids of these patients and then transmit the infection to other humans… The details of this infection route are not described in the Sanctuary records.”

The Pope nodded in response to Mei’s words and interjected, “And there’s also the issue of the bile of the sheep-beastmen, isn’t there?”

“Your Holiness, may I speak?” Darina interrupted.

“Go ahead.”

“Let’s reach out to the people living in the Holy Land and neighboring countries. They are devout followers of the Crimeana Church. If it’s an experiment to cure the incurable diseases of humans and beastmen, they will gladly offer their cooperation,” Darina said, looking smug.

The Pope smiled gently as he nodded. “I see. That might be a good idea too, to ask such devout…”

“Objection!”

Interrupting the Pope’s words, it was Linos. Still in the same position as before, he raised his hand.

“…And I have a suggestion to make… Ah, my hand hurts. Um, objection… Yes, objection… Oh, sorry about that. Uh, what were we talking about? Oh, right, the infection route. Do we really need to call for volunteers? Especially for the bile, don’t we have any sheep-beastmen who are scheduled for liver surgery? We can collect the bile during the surgery, can’t we?” Linos proposed.

“…King of Agarta has an interesting point. Do you have any specific individuals in mind?” The Pope continued to smile as he looked at Linos. At that moment, Chiwang’s voice resounded.

“Yes. We have patients scheduled for surgery. We can expedite the procedure and collect the bile. While we’re at it, we can also remove the disease foci,” Chiwang said with a sly grin.

Mei continued with her words. “I believe that there’s no need to use human subjects for the infection experiment either. Although we don’t know on which specimens the research institute conducted experiments, for instance, the Ogre, as I mentioned before, has a structure and constitution almost identical to humans. It’s just my personal opinion, but using the Ogre as an experiment should be acceptable, shouldn’t it?”

Imani nodded gracefully and looked at Darina and Clarina next to him. “Ms. Clarina, would it be acceptable to use the Ogre in the experiment?”

“Yes, it’s acceptable,” Clarina replied promptly.

“In that case, let’s use the Ogre. Perfect. There are ten live Ogres in the laboratory. I will provide them, so please use them as you see fit. Now, about the beastmen…”

Imani pretended to ponder for a moment. While observing his actions from the corner of his eye, Linos interjected, “It’s not something I really want to do, but if human experimentation is absolutely necessary, using the scoundrels from each country might be an option. There should be both humans and beastmen among them. It just so happens that a considerable number of thief gangs have infiltrated this country at the moment… It seems there are both humans and beastmen among them. Capturing those scoundrels and using them for the experiment might be an option too, don’t you think?”

The entire venue, including the Pope, was taken aback by his words.

“Um, first of all, are we okay with using Ogres for the infection experiment? Any objections? …None. And using criminal beastmen…? …No objections,” Linos said as he swiftly wrote on his paper.
