Chapter 188: Linos’s Hidden Talent

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

“… Nevertheless, it’s terrifying. To casually propose recruiting volunteers for human experiments to the Crimeana Church’s people.”

Uttering a half-exhausted voice while feeling disgusted, it’s Roni from Pousehai. The first day of the public questioning has ended smoothly, and we have returned to the Hideita Empire’s ship. The sun has already set, and when I look at the sea, there’s a magnificent view of the sunset beyond the horizon.

“Perhaps, if it’s the devout beastmen of the Crimeana Church, they would readily volunteer without any hesitation.”

Mei murmurs with a sad look.

“That’s why religion is scary. It can make people decide to sacrifice their lives easily without thinking too much. Those who are willing to die are one thing, but the most tragic are those forcibly offered as sacrifices in the name of gods. They find themselves in a situation where they have no choice but to raise their hands. It was the right decision to intervene in the Pope’s speech.”

As I speak, I look at everyone while crossing my arms. Their faces are tense.

“Exactly! I wanted to conduct the experiment, and that Pope ignored us Dwarves!” Angry and fuming, Pitan, a member of the Niza Kingdom delegation, vents his frustration.

“Well, from the perspective of Crimeana, they probably don’t want the influence of the Crimeana Church to decrease in other countries,” Prince Valus says, looking exasperated.

“By the way, Chiwang, Roni, you did an impressive job securing those who are already afflicted with the illness. I expected you to find at least one person, but fifteen is quite something,” I address Chiwang and Roni alternately.

“Oh, it wasn’t that difficult,” Chiwang replies.

“Huh? Really, Chiwang?”

“Yes. Starting with Lady Mei and Roni, those involved in the medical examinations in Agarta’s beastmen village conducted interviews during their check-ups. They came from various regions, you see. I asked them if there were any cases similar to Kirislei or Gaisha or Luroans’s symptoms, and we received a lot of information. The illness has distinct characteristics, and once afflicted, it becomes difficult to move. Based on that information, we investigated further and confirmed that fifteen individuals were suffering from the disease,” Chiwang explains.

“As expected of Pousehai. You truly are different,” I praise.

“Well, if I may say this… Crimeana has abundant knowledge, but they lack practical experience. We Pousehai value not only knowledge but also experience. Otherwise, when you face patients in real situations, you won’t be able to provide effective treatment. And wisdom doesn’t arise without knowledge and experience,” Chiwang replies.

“Chiwang… You’ve grown up,” I remark.

“Please, Lord Linos, stop it,” Chiwang blushes.

We laugh together on the ship. For now, we congratulate each other for successfully concluding today’s questioning and prepare for tomorrow’s main event. Tomorrow, we will transport the afflicted patients along with the beastmen bile. The Crimeana side will provide the necessary acid for creating the cure.

“Well then, let’s go and secure the beastmen for the human experiments…” I say as I cast a concealment barrier, making myself invisible, and head outside the ship. Utilizing the map, I head towards the location marked as “thief.” To my surprise, it’s a school.

“Well, that’s a clever idea. Hiding in a school. Certainly, no one would be there at night. Or maybe they plan to steal from the school? No, wait, do schools even have money?” I muse to myself as I make my way towards the hiding thief.

They were taking a break inside a large classroom. I enclosed them in a barrier and brought them all outside.

“There are so many of them. Twenty-four? Well, never mind. I need cat beastmen, dog beastmen, and wolf beastmen. Oh, there they are, there they are. What’s with you all? Every one of you has curses attached. So many at LV2. You guys are really troublesome.”

The thieves are shouting something, but I completely ignore them. I mechanically sort through the targeted beastmen.

“What… There are only six of them. Anyway, I’ll secure these ones for now.”

With six beastmen accompanying me, we return to the ship, consisting of four dog beastmen and two cat beastmen. Clearly, this is not enough, so I decide to teleport to the imperial capital’s mansion first.

“Soleil, are you back?”

“Yes, what can I do for you?”

“Do the forest spirits know anything about wicked dog beastmen, cat beastmen, and wolf beastmen?”

“Whaaat?!”

Soleil is quite surprised, but she eventually conveys my request to the spirits.

“…Wait a moment… Um, in Hideita, there are two wolf beastmen, and in Kalwarua, there are dog beastmen…”

“Oh, those are places I’ve never been. I’ll need Pousehai’s help for this.”

Thus, with the help of Pousehai, I successfully secure the cursed beastmen. Surprisingly, they are all males, and they look wicked at first sight. After capturing them, I teleport them onto the Hideita Empire’s ship, sealing them at the bottom of the ship.

“You will be taking taking part in an experiment while living together with Auger for about two weeks. Auger is powerful and gluttonous. Do your best to protect yourselves from being eaten. Good luck.” (T/N: I don’t remember who Auger is)

They strongly oppose my brief explanation, but I gracefully ignore their protests and lock them in a double barrier.

After finishing the task, I, Mei, Chiwang, and Roni return to the room on the ship and then teleport to the mansion in the imperial capital. There, I become curious about the beastmen bile and ask Chiwang.

“By the way, is the beastmen bile alright?”

“Yes, we will conduct the operation tonight and collect it then.”

“So, you guys… will be staying up all night and coming tomorrow?”

Surprised, Roni bows her head lightly.

“No, other people will be in charge of the operation. We will only collect the bile. So, tonight, we… um… will have dinner…”

“Oh, I see. Hearing that, I feel relieved. Then, let’s have dragon meat tonight to thank you. Chiwang, Roni, I’ll count on you tomorrow too.”

“Yes, understood.”

They both reply with energetic voices. When we enter the mansion, everyone else has already finished their dinner, but they saved our portions. Tonight’s meal is a mushroom mixed rice dish, resembling maitake mushrooms. I think it won’t go well with the meat, but I make dragon meat cutlets. We also have salad, soup, and simmered pumpkin on the menu, and surprisingly, they all taste delicious.

After finishing the meal, Chiwang and Roni teleport somewhere else. I immediately unfold the scroll of notes and start copying them onto another piece of paper.

“What is that, Lord Linos?”

Ferris peers curiously at my notes.

“Oh, this? It’s today’s meeting minutes.”

“Giji-roku?”

“I’m recording who said what during today’s meeting so that there won’t be any misunderstandings later.”

“But these… It’s just strange symbols, isn’t it?”

Ferris looks puzzled as she observes my notes. Rico and Mei also examine the notes but can’t understand them either.

“Linos… What are these patterns?”

“I also don’t know… I can’t understand what Master is writing.”

Both Rico and Mei, holding the children, look at the notes, but they seem unreadable.

“I’ve never seen these characters before. What language is this?”

“Gon, this is shorthand.”

“Sokki, is it?”

“Yeah. It’s a way to represent spoken words with symbols. It’s handy to know, but I never thought it would be useful here.”

“Master, when did you learn such characters?”

“Oh, a long time ago.”

I look distant, reminiscing about the bittersweet memories of my high school days when I studied shorthand. It was because I saw the girl I liked taking notes in shorthand. We got to know each other, but the love never blossomed. Well, she already had a boyfriend, as expected in such situations.

“However, shorthand can be unexpectedly useful, you know? During live performances, if you write down an MC’s speech in shorthand and turn it into text, it makes your partner happy.”

“In a live performance, writing MC’s speech in shorthand? What is the reason?”

“Oh, no, that’s a different story. Hahaha.”

“In the Basam family, are you taught even such things? No wonder the late Marquis Basam was so capable.”

Rico seems oddly impressed. I laugh again to dodge the topic.

“I still have this work to do, so I’ll be late. Everyone, as will be tomorrow too, please go to bed first. Mat, I’ll change plans and sleep with Rico tonight. Can you join her in the bath and go to bed?”

“Okay.”

Today was originally scheduled for Mat and me to sleep together, but I changed it so that Rico can join me instead. I’ll make sure to thank Mat properly next time.

I then focus on transcribing the notes and creating the meeting minutes. Gon helps me with the copying of the completed minutes. In this world, there is no movable type printing or even woodblock printing; everything is handwritten. Gon flawlessly copies the characters at an impressive speed. Thanks to him, we have four copies of the meeting minutes completed by the morning. What an exceptional white fox he is.

After taking a two-hour nap, morning arrives. Somehow, Chiwang and Roni from Pousehai have returned to the mansion. They seem to have slept well; Roni had some eye mucus, but I don’t mention it.

Breakfast consists of sandwiches, salad, and yesterday’s dragon cutlets. Each sandwich has various fillings, including the cutlets, grilled Orein (tuna) flakes, egg, ham, potato salad, and more, depending on individual preferences. With Rico and Peris working at full speed, we quickly prepare a wide variety of options, and the taste is at the level of a high-end restaurant.

Roni silently and hungrily devours the sandwiches. Her ears are twitching, indicating that she finds them delicious. Unbeknownst to everyone, she casually takes the remaining dragon cutlets as well.

After finishing the meal, we teleport back to the empire’s ship. Chiwang and Roni will join us later since they went to pick up the patients. I start signing the meeting minutes in the ship’s cabin. Additionally, I write a fancier sentence stating, “I, Linos, made this. You shouldn’t add, modify, or append to its content without my permission.”

Then, with the documents in hand, I head to the deck just as the carriage from Crimeana arrives to pick us up.

“Alright, Mei, let’s go.”

“Yes, my Lord.”

We board the carriage with high spirits.
