Chapter 198: The First Step Towards Battle

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Recently, as I thought about the chilly mornings and evenings setting in, on this day, fine snow was falling. It’s the moment that heralds the arrival of winter, and rightly so, as today is December first.

Before I knew it, I had turned twenty-two. In my previous life, this would have been around the time of a college senior, but in this world, being twenty-two feels more like being in your forties. I’m an old man, feeling the generation gap.

Still, physically, there’s no issue at all. No shoulder stiffness, no back pain. I’m in perfect condition.

And on this day, it’s the grand opening of the Agarta Medical Research Institute, utilizing the pinnacle of technology. Around a thousand people were invited to celebrate its opening in a splendid manner.

Initially, the plan was to collaborate with thirty-four countries to combat the Kirisrei, Gaisha, and Luroans threats, but when surrounding countries to Agarta, Hideita, and Niza heard the rumors, seven more countries expressed their desire to join the effort. While some might have intentions to uncover Agarta’s secrets, following Chiwang’s advice of not rejecting potential support and instead accepting all, the initiative began with forty-one nations.

The institute was equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that incorporated Mei’s suggestions. Additionally, responding to Mei’s strong request, a hospital was established within the institute to train doctors. Chiwang took the lead in this, accompanied by Roni and a few Pousehai, promptly starting medical treatments.

Furthermore, the accommodation facilities were comprehensive, with nearly three hundred beds available to receive numerous patients.

For constructing this facility, only three noble residences were used. Yes, just three. This was an attempt to understand how large the noble houses in the Juka Kingdom were. Incidentally, amidst all this, one of the royal residences was converted into a hotel. It had a rather retro atmosphere, akin to a historical, prestigious hotel with a tasteful and mature design.

While the inpatient facility was impressive, there’s still a shortage of staff, and currently, only basic medical activities are being conducted at the clinic. However, under the guidance of Mei and Sid, pharmacists and nurses were being trained. Most of them were beastmen who had taken refuge.

Based on the research by Mei, Chiwang, and Roni, which concluded that the likelihood of disease transmission through beastmen as intermediaries was extremely low, they boldly accepted them without distinction. Perhaps because of this, the attitudes of those who come to learn differ. Their attitudes have begun to change the hearts of some city-dwellers who initially hesitated, and the clinic is becoming a place where anyone can easily visit. Occasionally, the ladies from the inn even bring us refreshments, which is truly appreciated.

Simultaneously, beastmen were also employed at the new hotel. The uniforms designed by Soleil are incredibly stylish and cute. Many youths aspired to become hotel staff inspired by these uniforms. They are improving rapidly through training sessions with staff from the guesthouse, and recent tests were conducted to simulate full occupancy before opening. People from the capital were invited, and I also stayed there with Rico. I was surprised that the quality of service, furnishings, and cuisine was on par with the Imperial Hotel. I was very satisfied, but Rico, with her keen eye, provided detailed advice on the staff and furnishings.

Through these experiences, the day of the institute’s opening has arrived. As the nominal king, I’m standing before hundreds of invited guests at the opening ceremony, dressed in an unfamiliar formal suit, sweating all over. Standing beside me is Rico, who is also fully dressed up. Her hair is tied up, adorned with a tiara, and her off-shoulder dress is truly luxurious. And as she subtly stands by my side, she’s revealing her even more beautiful skin.

Behind her are Mei, Matokal, Considy, and Soleil, each elegantly dressed and waiting. Among them, Soleil emits a particularly special allure, but surprisingly, when Matokal dresses up, she is quite beautiful as well.

With my wives like that behind me, I step forward and deliver my congratulatory speech.

“Uh, well. Today’s weather is quite favorable, and above all, I must say that this Agarta Medical Research Institute was established with the purpose of eradicating infectious diseases from the world. Today, it has reached its completion and I can’t contain my joy.”

Normally, giving speeches is not my strong suit, but this time it’s different. Rico is speaking the lines from behind me. With this, I don’t stumble.

“In the future, I intend to serve as a king and contribute to eradicating many infectious diseases through this institute. To all those gathered here, please lend us your strength. I humbly ask for your support.”

…The atmosphere in the venue becomes somewhat delicate. However, I confidently step down from the stage without concern. Immediately after, a round of applause erupts from the audience, and the opening ceremony of the day concludes as a great success.

Afterward, within a certain association in Agarta, Linos became a topic of conversation.

“As expected, Lord Linos was one of us.”

“I understand. I get it. Playing the role of a king must be tough. But the fact that his true self comes out when he’s nervous is quite adorable.”

“Still, having so many wives means he’s got it tough, doesn’t it?”

“Well, why not? Who knows? He has to leave descendants as a king, so maybe he’s pushing himself hard for that?”

“Really? Well then, we have to comfort him.”

“Is that okay, everyone? Lord Linos’s true face will be our secret.”

“Of course, big sis.”

From then on, Linos started receiving intense attention from members of a certain association, but at this moment, he remains unaware.

——–

Since the time when the research institute was being constructed, I had been visiting the Kirisrei, Gaisha, and Luroans patients brought in by Chiwang and Roni. It’s not the usual kind of visit with fruits in hand, but an actual appraisal of each patient.

I carefully looked into the history of each patient. First, I began with the four Gaisha patients. Their ages, genders, and the timing of disease onset varied. Only one of them had lived with beastmen, and he was a young man in his thirties.

This young man had indeed been married to a wolf beastwoman. However, even though one man had never been in contact with a wolf beastman, he was also afflicted. What I found from appraising them was that this disease initially caused the inability to twist or bend the body, followed by abdominal pain that spreads throughout the body. I tried using Level 5 healing magic, Ultimate Heal, on them. While the pain was alleviated, the stiffened muscles didn’t recover, and what’s more, after about a month, the pain would recur. It was a troublesome illness.

Next, I appraised the Luroans patients.

They suffered from a demonic disease where purple spots appeared on their necks, followed by sudden death. There were five men and women afflicted with this. They also underwent careful appraisal, and although only one of them lived with cat beastmen, it was found that all of them were in their forties or older. This disease had a common point among the five: three of them had lost a parent to symptoms similar to those of Luroans. It might be a genetic illness. I used Ultimate Heal on them too, and most of the purple spots disappeared. They are currently under observation.

Lastly, I appraised the Kirisrei patients.

There were six men and women, and their ages had the widest range among the three diseases. The youngest was fourteen, while the oldest was fifty. All of them were in a comatose state, and we couldn’t communicate. While I was appraising them, it turned out that the onset of this disease varied as well. Besides the usual symptoms like persistent low fever and widespread itching, some also showed symptoms similar to gout, where they would feel extremely uncomfortable when exposed to the wind. Yet, these patients had no one who lived with dog beastmen.

Their illnesses were varied. I treated them with Ultimate Heal as well, but none of them woke up, and they continue to sleep soundly. This disease gradually makes their breathing shallow, eventually leading to death. Indeed, one of the patients has shallow breathing, and they are currently kept alive using a device similar to a respirator developed by Mei and the others.

In this manner, the Agarta Medical Research Institute was able to begin with a spectacular start. However, the assassins sent by Crimeana were closing in on Agarta.

Preparations for Veil and Cassel, who had received special training, were proceeding smoothly. Along with the new year, they were set to set sail towards Agarta. Furthermore, in response to this, followers of the Crimeana Faith from all around the world were gearing up to leave their countries and head towards Agarta. The counterattack by the Crimeana Faith was about to begin.

T/N: Ah yes, religious people have nothing better to do. While some people are actually trying to solve real problems, others just want to find any way to destroy them no matter what. These parts of the story are very relatable to real world examples.
