Chapter 201: Challenge Letter and Assassination Warning

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

The day after bidding farewell to Vielle and the others, a meeting had been in progress in Agarta’s Linos’ office since morning. Amidst a vast pile of documents, Linos, along with Mei, Chiwang, and Roni, huddled together, engaging in a spirited discussion.

The topic under discussion was the possibility that Linos had pointed out during his recent examination of a Kirisrei patient – the potential involvement of dogs as carriers.

“At present, we are still in the investigation phase, but we have conducted inquiries in the three countries: Agarta, Hideita, and Niza. Approximately seven hundred households were found to own dogs. Some of them were noble households, and there were eight households that refused to cooperate. However, among the households that did cooperate, there were no reported cases of Kirisrei,” Mei reported with a hint of regret. Linos shook his head while gazing at Mei.

“No need to worry, Mei. It’s okay. If this doesn’t work, we’ll consider our next move.”

Upon hearing this, Roni spoke up, “I conducted an investigation on dog-beastfolk just to be sure. As mentioned earlier, Agarta undoubtedly has the highest population of dog-beastfolk among the three countries. I investigated approximately two thousand dog-beastfolk living in Agarta, and there were no signs of infection among them. Moreover, none of their acquaintances were infected with Kirisrei.”

“I see…” Linos nodded.

“By the way,” Chiwang chimed in, “Out of the six Kirisrei patients mentioned, four of them lived in the surrounding countries of Sandangi. As the Sandangi King mentioned earlier, there was a major Kirisrei outbreak in that country in the past. Furthermore, the infection rate in that country is higher than in other nations. It might be worth conducting a thorough investigation in Sandangi.”

Listening to the explanation, Linos retrieved relevant patient data from the mountain of documents and showed it to the others. It was a good thing that these records were so accurate. While thinking about the high-quality database, Mei spoke up.

“I also want to conduct an investigation in Sandangi. Most likely, King Sandangi would grant permission. But…”

Mei trailed off, and it was understandable. The Sandangi King had a strong interest in Mei. He probably wouldn’t physically harm her, but unwanted advances, kisses, and harassment were almost guaranteed. Furthermore, Mei had to prepare herself for daily attempts at seduction.

“Well, fortunately or unfortunately, Mei hasn’t revoked her status as a criminal slave yet. So, Mei won’t become the Sandangi King’s possession. However, enduring daily perverted actions and verbal harassment wouldn’t be good for her mental well-being.”

Saying that, I crossed my arms and contemplated. First, I decided to write a letter to King Sandangi to seek his permission, and I began writing with determination.

“I have a good idea. If we receive permission from King Sandangi, let’s set up a protective barrier that makes Mei appear as a Pousehai when she goes there. I’ll mention that in the letter and send Pousehais for investigation.”

I completed the letter and handed it to Chiwang, who had experience with teleporting to Sandangi. “I apologize, Master,” Mei said, her face turning bright red.

“It’s fine, Mei. You don’t need to apologize. Besides, even if someone tries to take Mei away from me, They wouldn’t stand a chance. Aliria would be devastated, and most importantly, without Mei, who occasionally clings to me, I’d feel lonely.”

“Master…” Mei blushed deeply.

“Ahem,” Roni cleared her throat. I had forgotten about Roni’s presence.

“Excessive indulgence is like poison,” Roni lectured with a scholarly look on her face, enough to make me feel downcast.

After a while, Chiwang teleported back to the office with a Pousehai in tow. “Linos-sama, I delivered your letter to King Sandangi. He was greatly pleased and expressed his willingness to assist.”

“Is that all?” I asked.

“That’s all… Is there something else?”

“Of course… Has King Sandangi mentioned anything about Mei…?”

“Ah… yes… He wondered if Lady Meirias would be accompanying you…”

“I knew it,” I chuckled.

“When we go to Sandangi, let’s set up a barrier for Mei to appear as a Pousehai. It probably won’t be exposed, but… Oh, Mei’s name might give it away. We need to come up with a different name.”

“Would ‘Meisama’ be acceptable?” Roni interjected. I slapped my knee and laughed.

“I see, ‘Meisama’ it is. I can’t wait to see the expression on King Sandangi’s face. Haha! Chiwang, Roni, and Lases, I’m counting on you for Mei. Also, no overtime allowed. Try to leave work on time, okay?”

“On time?” Chiwang asked.

“Finish work by 6 PM. Roni tends to work late,” I replied.

“Yes, understood.”

With that, Mei and the three Pousehais teleported to the medical research institute.

In the evening, a new visitor arrived at my office. It was a man named Yawasa, who ran a steamed bun shop. I had served zenzai during a relief effort when I first arrived in Agarta, and he had liked it so much that he started serving it at his shop. It was quite delicious, and since I appreciated it, I taught him how to make the red bean paste and even shared some tips on making steamed buns. He had eagerly embraced the knowledge and had become skilled at making them. Now, these buns were a specialty of his shop, and I frequented it.

“Oh, Yawasa, what’s up?”

“Linos-sama, I’ve brought your order.”

“Huh? I don’t recall placing an order.”

“Well, it’s not from Linos-sama. Um… Yes, it’s from a young lady named Vielle. She wanted to deliver this to Linos-sama.”

Yawasa handed me a box, and upon opening it, I found a considerable number of steamed buns.

“There are a hundred in there. Payment has already been made… But she ordered a hundred steamed buns, paid immediately, and left. She only asked mentioned your name. Is she some noble?”

“Well, something like that.”

“I see, that explains it… Well then, please enjoy. See you next time!”

With that, Yawasa left my office.

I took the delivered steamed buns and returned to my mansion in the Imperial Capital. Upon seeing the quantity, Rico exclaimed in surprise.

“My, what is the meaning of this abundance of steamed buns?”

“Oh, these are a gift from the Crimeana Church.”

“The Crimeana Church… Could it be…”

“No, I don’t think they’re poisoned.”

“But…”

Rico stared at the steamed buns with unease. On the other hand, Ferris and Gon seemed delighted. It seemed they wanted to eat them right away.

“Dinner is almost ready. You can have them after dinner. Also, take some to the shrine and offer them to Tori-chan. And Luala, please go to Pousehai and offer them there as well.”

“Understood!”

“Got it!”

With that, the two of them went out to the backyard. Later, Mei and the others returned home for dinner, and afterward, we all enjoyed the steamed buns as dessert.

“Still, it’s unsettling. Why steamed buns?”

Rico muttered as she looked at the steamed buns.

“Probably, they want to let me know about their information network. That I have a preference for steamed buns, know of that particular shop, and that I have around a hundred close associates, including family members. Using the Crimeana information network, they could easily find out these details. It’s a warning, suggesting that they could know even more about my private life.”

“An information network?”

“Yeah. This is clearly a challenge from the Crimeana Church. There’s more to it, Rico. I suspect there’s a hidden meaning behind this.”

“A hidden meaning?”

“Just having a hundred steamed buns all to oneself… could be deadly, you know? It’s an assassination attempt.”

“What? I don’t quite understand.”

“Because it’s red bean paste… an allusion to ‘red’ in assassination.”

“Linos…”

Rico hung her head in dismay. I, on the other hand, continued to eat the steamed buns. They were delicious, with the red bean paste having an exquisite flavor. After finishing a few more, I spoke up.

“…I’m afraid of tea now.”
