Chapter 205: Seemingly Not Watching, But Watching

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Throughout the riverbank, bonfires were blazing, and numerous people had gathered around, creating an atmosphere resembling a large construction site. Looking deeper into the riverbank, a vast number of tents could be seen, and at its furthest end, two lodge-like buildings came into view.

In one of these lodges, a young girl and a young boy were offering prayers before their meal alongside the bishops.

“…Our Lord, bestow your grace upon us, and vanquish evil.”

As if waiting for the prayer to conclude, the door opened, and an adventurer-like man entered the room.

“Excuse my intrusion during your meal. Lady Vielle, the path to the forest’s exit is now complete.”

Vielle’s face lit up upon hearing the news.

“Well, in that case, we can head to the capital of Agarta, can we not?”

“Yes, once you’ve finished your meal, we can depart. We should be able to exit the forest today, and it’s expected to take about three days to reach Agarta’s capital. Lady Vielle, I apologize for the inconvenience…”

Vielle responded with a smile and her grandfather’s gentle voice.

“No need to worry. Those who guide the people of Agarta to the path of righteousness should be able to endure such inconveniences without issue. Please, do not concern yourselves.”

As Vielle spoke, a female bishop sitting beside her chimed in.

“Indeed, Lady Vielle. Your words are truly admirable. With your pure and righteous heart, Agarta will become a nation that follows the path of righteousness. The road you’ve taken will undoubtedly be known as Lady Vielle’s path of tribulation.”

“No, Jolina. The credit for Agarta becoming a nation that follows the path of righteousness does not belong to me or to us. It is solely due to the guidance of Lady Crimeana.”

Cheers erupted from the bishops present.

“May Lady Crimeana’s blessings be upon everyone gathered here. Now, let’s eat while it’s still warm. Once we finish our meal, we shall depart.”

With a smile, Vielle urged the bishops to eat.

Approximately an hour later, the group left the riverbank where they had set up camp. Behind them, hundreds of believers formed a procession.

All of these individuals had arrived by boat with Vielle and the others, totaling seven hundred people. They were an incredibly diverse group, including bishops, dozens of magicians, barrier mages, skilled swordsmen numbering in the hundreds, and nearly four hundred devout followers chosen from various professions.

These followers faithfully obeyed the bishops’ orders. They willingly accepted any task, finding joy in serving Vielle and Kassel. All of them felt immense joy in serving their country, their faith stronger than anyone else’s.

Furthermore, the believers brought with them ample supplies, even assembling lodges for Vielle and Kassel. These lodges were collapsible, and they could set them up in less than an hour. Loaded onto wagons along with materials and supplies, they slowly made their way toward Agarta on a well-constructed road made using earth magic.

Along the way, they encountered attacks from monsters, but these were swiftly dealt with by the magicians and swordsmen. Though the swordsmen appeared as adventurers, their attire boasted excellent magic resistance, layered beneath with chainmail-like undergarments for added protection.

Vielle and Kassel continued their journey towards Agarta at a leisurely pace.

“Sister, the road remains incredibly comfortable as always.”

“Indeed. Creating such a long road alone is impressive, but maintaining a flat path like this is truly remarkable. It helps us appreciate the excellence of our country’s magicians.”

As they conversed, the female bishop Jolina, who had been listening, interjected.

“Please remember, Lady Vielle and Lord Kassel, that this road has been constructed quite robustly.”

“Is that so, Jolina?”

“Yes, please keep in mind that, even after we enter Agarta, the Ilbeji River we’ve walked alongside will flood in the spring due to snowmelt. Melting snow water will flow through it. In a few months, the road we’ve walked on will be submerged in water. That’s why we’re building a sturdy road that can still be used after the water recedes.”

“It’s truly amazing. Jolina, you seem to know everything!”

Vielle listened with delight to Jolina’s explanation.

A total of seven hundred believers, all followers of the Crimeana religion and handpicked from all over the world. Not a single one of them realized that their actions were constantly monitored from the sky by a fairy dragon, or that their conversations were overheard by the forest spirits. Everything they did and said was completely transparent to Linos and the others.

“Ah, I see. So the road remains usable even when the water recedes. That’s quite convenient.”

I clapped my hands in delight within the office.

“That’s why the earth magic users are outside the forest, helping to construct the road,” Soleil reported.

“I suppose so. I sympathize with the magicians. But you know, the forest spirits have exceptional information-gathering abilities. I’m glad Soleil is on our side,” I remarked.

“Oh, you’re too kind. I owe all these abilities to you, Lord Linos,” Soleil replied.

“Is that so?” I inquired.

“Yes. I wouldn’t have gained such abilities without your grace. I not only received mercy from my beloved but also these incredible powers. As a woman, it brings me utmost joy. All that’s left is to be blessed with Lord Linos’s child, and my wishes will be fulfilled.”

“Well, that’s something only the gods know.”

“Indeed, as you say. But one must put in effort to receive blessings. Please, feel free to summon me anytime. I will come at your call, day or night. Would it be acceptable for you to visit my room at night when everyone is asleep?”

“Uh… cough.”

Matokal blushed and cleared her throat.

“Oh my, I completely forgot about Mat,” Soleil exclaimed.

“Soleil, perhaps discussing such matters so openly in broad daylight isn’t appropriate,” I advised.

“I see. Forgive me. Mat, do you not desire Lord Linos’s grace?”

“Well, it’s not that…”

“Soleil, it’s not suitable to talk about these matters so openly in the middle of the day. Let’s be a bit more discreet,” I advised sternly.

Soleil looked somewhat disheartened by my harsh words.

“Well, never mind. Keep monitoring the Crimeana people through the forest spirits. I rely on you, Soleil,” I told her.

“Yes, I understand,” Soleil nodded.

I opened the window in the office.

“Sadakichi.”

“You called?”

“How’s the situation in Galby?”

“Please wait.”

Sadakichi disappeared and, after a few seconds, reappeared in front of me.

“It appears that none of the other ships have landed yet. There’s also no sign of them along the road to the capital.”

“Understood. Thank you.”

Once I confirmed Sadakichi’s departure, I closed the window and sat back at the office desk.

“So, the advanced party from Crimeana is likely to arrive in Agarta before the rest. If it takes just a day by ship from Agarta to Galby… By creating a road and securing transportation while they head to their base location, they plan to send the believers into Agarta in one fell swoop? If that’s the case… they’re being quite cautious,” I contemplated aloud.

I opened my eyes and turned to Matokal.

“Mat, as you heard earlier, the advanced party from Crimeana is about to exit the forest. I want you to go ahead, meet the girl and the boy, and bring them here along with any accompanying bishops.”

“Just the two of them?”

“Well, I assume some bishops will be accompanying them, so bring them as well. If they hesitate or make excuses, tell them it was a divine revelation from Lady Crimeana. Don’t hesitate to play it up a bit. Can you do it?”

“Is that… all?”

“Don’t overexert yourself. If you’re not good at acting, it’s fine. You can’t put on a show, can you?”

“That’s not true. I lead the first division after all. I’m confident in maintaining composure.”

“Your face turns beet red, and you get all fidgety. You don’t need to do it today. Sometimes, you don’t have to. Mat, you’re terrible at acting.”

“That’s not… ugh… discussions of intimate matters…”

Matokal blushed and hung her head.

“We made a promise not to do that. Sorry.”

I glanced at Soleil and smiled.
