Chapter 211: The Trials of Vielle. But, it’s just the beginning.

The snow that had covered the land of Agarta had finally begun to melt. The warm, gentle breeze heralded the long-awaited arrival of spring. However, there were those who had no time to appreciate this change – the followers of the Crimeana Church.

Without waiting for the snow to completely melt, they began constructing a village exclusively for the faithful. They utilized supplies brought through the Niza Principality, battled the cold while cutting down trees in the forest to create lumber, and began crafting their own dwellings. Simultaneously, they were building walls around the village. The speed at which they worked exceeded the expectations of Linos and others, and by the time spring arrived, seventy percent of the construction was complete.

Up to this point, the plans of the Crimeanan followers, Vielle and her people, were progressing as expected. While the number of settlers was only about a third of what was originally planned, they had managed to bring the cream of the crop from their homeland – highly skilled soldiers and experienced engineers. In other words, they had formed an efficient group with the best of the Crimeanan nation. Therefore, the village construction remained relatively small-scale, food supplies were abundant, and they had enough reserves to sustain them for another year. All that remained was to gradually expand their influence, drawing in the people of Agarta to the Crimeana side, and if Agarta, sensing a threat, were to launch an attack, they planned to use their well-trained soldiers to fight back with all their might, seize the capital, and subsequently destroy the nearby beastfolk village.

However, two unexpected events occurred at this point. One was that there was no increase in the number of Crimeanan Church believers in Agarta, and the other was the issue of condensation.

The condensation problem was particularly severe. Condensation occurred both inside and outside the buildings in the village. Despite trying various measures to prevent it, they couldn’t find an effective solution. As a result, by the time spring arrived, mold had grown in various buildings, and an unpleasant smell permeated the area. Some houses even had mushrooms growing inside.

Naturally, mold had also grown on their beds, sheets, and clothing. It was an uncomfortable environment that would make ordinary people want to flee, but the faithful endured it with their unwavering determination.

Furthermore, they had been involved in conflicts with the local populace throughout Agarta. Their credibility among the people of the capital was zero, and gradually, they were becoming a stigmatized presence among Agarta’s citizens.

“…Understood. Please continue,” Vielle said, having finished listening to the bishop’s report. She tried her best to maintain a composed demeanor, but her exhaustion was evident in every movement.

“Vielle-sama…”

Bishop Kohreshi was the one addressing her.

“Please take a short break. I know the conditions here are… less than ideal. However, in a few more days, the new houses will be ready. You can move there and take some rest.”

Upon hearing those words, Vielle responded with a small smile. “Other believers are enduring this environment just like I am. I cannot accept special treatment. Your concern is enough.”

Kohreshi hung his head for a moment but eventually gathered his resolve to speak.

“Vielle-sama, let’s leave this place. How about seeking a new location for our settlement?”

“What are you saying!” Vielle, unusually, responded with a raised voice. “Do you realize how much effort we’ve put into building this village? The village construction is proceeding as planned. Abandoning this place just because there is mold would only further stigmatize us among the people of Agarta. Besides, this place is at the heart of Agarta. Our presence here is akin to a blade at the throat of the Agartan king, isn’t it? Leaving this place… It’s another test given to us by Crimeana-sama. We must overcome this to become true servants of the Supreme Deity. Kohreshi-san, is your loyalty to Crimeana and the Supreme Deity so shallow?”

In the face of Vielle’s rarely seen expression of anger, Kohreshi could only feel deep regret.

“I… I apologize profusely. This Kohreshi has been thoughtless.”

“You understand, that’s enough. Surely, Crimeana-sama will come to our aid. When spring arrives, when it gets warmer, the situation will change. Just a little longer. We still have work to do. We need to cultivate fields and grow crops. We must lead this village to prosperity. Show our strength. Then, the people of Agarta will surely come to realize the power of Crimeana-sama’s divine protection. This is our crucible. Kohreshi-san, let’s do our best.”

Kohreshi repeatedly bowed his head and left the room. Soon after, Kassel entered the room.

“Sister…”

“Ah, Kassel. Right now, Kohreshi-san…”

“I heard it outside. Sister… I believe your thoughts are correct. However…”

“However, what is it, Kassel?”

“Still, I can’t help but think that this country is still under the influence of the Great Demon King. Perhaps we should consult with our homeland, with His Holiness the Pope…”

“It’s unnecessary.”

“Sister!”

“The people of this country, including King Agarta, have not accepted our Crimeana faith or the teachings of the Supreme Deity. Surely, this country will face divine punishment. Reporting to His Holiness will only result in an order to destroy those who oppose us. We must build a paradise here. We must lead this village to prosperity. When the people of Agarta once again witness the hellish scenes in this land, there must be one place of prosperity and peace. That must be us. Kassel, please lend your strength as well. Oh, yes. Let’s go and preach to the people of Agarta once more. It’s still not too late…”

After saying this, Vielle prepared to leave the room with a sense of urgency. Kassel could only watch her depart without saying anything.

Vielle, along with several bishops, made their way to the capital of Agarta and began their missionary work. She passionately explained how great Crimeana-sama was and the terrifying future that awaited this country. She spoke with fervor about how only the divine protection of Crimeana-sama could save them. Finally, she conveyed that Crimeana Village was the place of salvation, with a gentle gaze.

She could easily give herself a perfect score; it was an outstanding performance. Vielle had absolute confidence in her preaching skills. She had conducted missionary work in various places before and had gained many followers with her divine aura and persuasive abilities. Her performance was so excellent that she could give herself a perfect score. However, the reactions of the Agarta people gathered around her were lukewarm.

“When is this evil being supposed to arrive?”

“In the near future, in the near future!”

“Well, as long as Lord Linos is here, it should be fine.”

“No! Agarta’s king wouldn’t stand a chance against an opponent of such immense evil! Yes, long ago…”

“If an opponent that even the king can’t stand against appears, there’s nowhere to run, you know? Well, it’ll be fine. Lord Linos will surely handle it somehow. He was shopping at the market yesterday, so I guess he’s okay. By the way, what kind of appearance does an opponent that even Lord Linos can’t handle have?”

“It’s incredibly evil… It’s evil… It’s evil…”

“Miss, don’t tease adults too much.”

Such conversations were repeated wherever they went. Furthermore, witnessing Vielle’s plight, some people from the capital offered food and drinks, but even to those people, she continued with her usual response.

“To receive hot water on such a cold day… This is also thanks to Crimeana-sama. I am grateful to the Supreme Deity,” Vielle said.

Naturally, the person who had offered the gesture walked away with an indescribable expression on their face.

Yet another day had passed without any significant progress, and the sun was beginning to set. Vielle and her group reluctantly began their journey back home. At that moment, they noticed a man carrying a heavy-looking stone. Vielle and her companions approached the man and offered to help carry the stone. However, the man’s reaction was unexpected.

“Hey, don’t touch it! I said, don’t touch it!”

“No, we’ll help. It’s heavy, isn’t it? We’ll assist you. Please don’t worry.”

“I told you not to touch it! Ugh!”

Unable to bear it any longer, the man threw the stone onto the ground.

“You idiots! It’s easier to carry alone. If you guys help, it throws off the balance! Don’t interfere with my work! I have to get this to the boss’s site before sundown! You’re in the way!”

With these words, the man picked up the stone again and continued walking.

On their way back to the village, one of the bishops spoke as if muttering to himself.

“I heard that King Agarta is skilled in creating barriers… Could it be that he has placed a barrier around the capital to reject our Crimeana faith?”

“That might be possible. I think… it’s likely.”

Vielle muttered weakly. She was on the verge of losing the will even to judge whether this conversation was nonsensical or not. Moreover, in a way, the conversation was partially correct, but of course, they had no way of knowing that. In the midst of it all, Vielle shook her head slightly, determined to boost her fragile spirit. She scolded herself for becoming discouraged and reaffirmed her determination to prove herself to King Agarta and the people of this country.
