Chapter 214: Idle Dreams

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

I pay no attention to the boy in front of me and ring the bell on the desk. The guards outside quickly enter the office.

“Summon Layfence and Kunogen,” I command.

The soldier bows and swiftly leaves the room. After a while, Layfence and the others arrive in the office. Surprisingly, Matokal is with them.

“What, Mat’s here too? Well, that’s fine. Generals, it’s time for action. We’re heading to Crimeana Village.”

“Oh! Finally launching an attack! I’ve been waiting for this! My sword hand is itching,” Layfence exclaims.

“No, we’re not attacking,” I reply.

“What do you mean?”

“Gather about twenty of our best cavalrymen, preferably those who have served you since the capital. I want the generals to take care of the wounded Crimeana members we’ll find there.”

“Take care of them?”

“Yes. Choose a woman you like, it doesn’t matter. Hold her close, speak comforting words, and take care of her.”

“What? That’s…”

Layfence seems half-astonished, but his face lights up, likely at the prospect of touching a woman he desires.

“I’ll bring Ilymo with me. Mei, Chiwang, Roni, the three of you come with us. Stand by with the generals at the gate,” I order.

Mei and the others nod silently.

“Linos-sama,”

“Perfect, Mat. Take this boy with you. There’s a possibility of infection with a contagious disease, but don’t worry. It’s protected by a barrier, and his voice has been muted. Take him with you.”

“Understood.”

Mat picks up Kassel as if he were a stuffed toy and leaves the room. Once I confirm this, I call the guards again, instructing them to capture the followers of Crimeana who are in the capital and the city of Agarta, and then we teleport from the office to the mansion in the capital.

———-

About thirty minutes later, we, along with twenty cavalrymen, are assembled in front of the western gate of the royal capital, ready to depart for Crimeana Village. Mei is behind me, Chiwang is with Kunogen, and Roni seems uncomfortable as she rides behind Layfence.

“All right. Follow me!”

With that, we leave the city at a breakneck pace. We move further and further away until the city walls are no longer visible, and we eventually stop our horses. I check the surroundings on the map.

“All right, no one’s here.”

I approach Matokal and glance at the boy cradled in her arms. He still glares at me with murderous intent and shouts something.

“It’s bedtime for the little one,” I say, and put Kassel to sleep within the barrier. Despite being a child, he should be quite heavy, but Matokal has no trouble holding him. I can’t help but admire her for it.

“Let’s set up barriers for everyone here for now. The forest we’re about to enter is highly likely to be infected with a contagious disease. But don’t worry. The barrier is always filled with clean air. There won’t be any pathogenic bacteria inside. However, be prepared for unexpected situations. Everyone, be cautious. What I’d like the general and Kunogen to do is gather the followers living in the village in one place. Those who can’t move are fine as they are. I’ll provide further instructions on the meeting place later. By the way, there’s a woman dressed in white like the boy Mat is carrying. Don’t touch her. I’ll be the one to talk to her. Is everyone clear? Then, let’s teleport from here!”

With that command, the cavalry unit disappears in an instant.

We arrive in a wide grassy field. This is where we intercepted and repelled the Lamaron army when they invaded. I recall those memories fondly. However, I don’t have time to dwell on them, as I urge Ilymo toward Crimeana Village. Two hours later, we overlook Crimeana Village.

The village was eerily quiet. Even as we entered the village, not a single person emerged from the tents. Only faint voices of prayer could be heard. We continued further into the village. Suddenly, a bishop appeared as if jumping out from the back.

“Who are you people? By whose permission have you come to this village?” he demanded.

“I am Linos of Agarta, the king,” I declared, stepping forward. He displayed a momentarily bewildered expression but quickly regained his composure. His face had a couple of purple spots.

“What business do you have here?” he inquired.

“Well, young Kassel came to us seeking help,” I replied.

“Kassel?”

He looked at Kassel, who was being cradled by Matokal, looking exhausted.

“He came to us and begged for assistance. We rushed here to take whatever action was necessary. Word has it that people are dropping like flies here. What’s going on? Is everyone all right? And that little girl… where is Lady Vielle? Poor Kassel was muttering about Lady Vielle and then passed out.”

My delivery was flat and devoid of emotion. Listening to my story, the bishop stared off for a while, his gaze drifting, but eventually, he muttered, “I’ll guide you,” and led us.

The man guiding us introduced himself as Murack. He occasionally looked nauseous as he walked in front of us.

We hadn’t noticed due to the barrier preventing outside air from entering, but this village was enveloped in a nauseating stench. In addition to the foul odor from the mold generated by condensation, there was the putrid stench of the deceased believers. It was a nauseating, overwhelming odor of decay.

As we walked and surveyed our surroundings, we saw many houses and tents, but there were few people. Those who were outside had vacant, empty eyes. They wandered aimlessly, muttering prayers, chanting, and crying out for their main god to help them.

Continuing forward, we spotted a large lodge. Vielle was there.

She was offering prayers in front of a painting hanging on the wall. She either hadn’t noticed our entrance or was entirely focused on her prayers.

“Lady Vielle…”

The voice of the bishop who had brought us here made her tremble, and she slowly turned around. Purple spots covered her face. She gazed at us with vacant eyes for a while, but eventually, her expression shifted from shock to astonishment. She looked around nervously and, without attempting to conceal her surprise, let out her words.

“King of Agarta… why are you here?!”

Suddenly, she covered her face with both hands and crouched down.

“Don’t look. Please don’t look! Don’t look!”

“I see. So, this is what the boy was talking about. Well, it’s your own doing, but you still have some punishment coming your way,” I remarked, sealing Vielle within the barrier and then putting her to sleep.

———

Wrapped in a gentle warmth, Vielle woke up from her slumber. She had slept well. When was the last time she had slept so soundly? For the past few months, she had endured sleepless nights. It was a feeling of deep sleep that she hadn’t experienced in a long time. She had slept a bit too much, and her body felt a bit sluggish. Today, too, she had managed to wake up. She was alive. However, she still had to endure that unbearable stench, the dampness, and the uncertainty of when death might come. But she was the granddaughter of the Pope. She couldn’t show herself in a pitiful state. She had to get up. She had to offer prayers to Crimeana-sama. Otherwise, she felt like death would come for her. No, she didn’t want to die yet…

Suppressing her feelings of wanting to stay in bed, she got out of bed. Next to her, on another large bed, was Kassel. She looked around the room as she rose, and what met her eyes was a bright, spacious room. Luxurious furnishings, a chandelier, and the clean, comfortable pajamas she was wearing… She was awestruck by the opulence. Then she noticed Kassel sleeping beside her.

“Kassel, where are we? Why are we in a place like this?”

“Well, let’s see. This place is… Wait, Lady Vielle! The spots on your face!”

Hearing Kassel’s surprised voice, Vielle once again surveyed the room. She rushed over to a large mirror, checking her own face.

“…The spots are gone.”

Her face transformed from surprise to relief. At that moment, there was a knock on the door, and a beautiful maid entered.

“Good morning. This is the master’s mansion. I’m afraid I can’t reveal his name due to certain circumstances, but you have been relocated here from the village of Crimeana. The neighboring room houses the other bishops as well. Although your conditions were critical, please rest assured. We have received a special remedy from the Holy Land, and you have all been treated. You no longer need to worry about your lives. Also, there’s a message from our Lord. It is recommended that you stay for four to five days to recover your strength and energy. The environment in the village has improved as well, as we have provided food, clean clothing, and fabric to the villagers. Please consider your future strategy after fully regaining your strength. …It’s almost lunchtime. I will bring your meals.”

With those words, the maid left the room. Vielle and Kassel, still not fully comprehending the current situation, exchanged glances and remained silent for a while. Then, the door was knocked once again, and the same maid returned with their meals. The pasta, meat dishes, soup, and salad all looked delicious, and they were the most delicious meals they had had in a long time. The two of them ate in silence, savoring every bite.

After the meal, when the dishes were cleared, five bishops entered the room. Kohreshi and Jolina were among them, and their faces lit up with joy.

“Oh my, all of you as well? You’re saved?”

“Yes, Lady Vielle. This is a mansion located about a day away from the village of Crimeana. We cannot reveal the name of the owner, but we were given special medicine from the Holy Land, which cured our ailments. We have also been provided with clean rooms and clothing, and just a while ago, we had a delicious meal. Lady Vielle, your face… Your beautiful face has returned. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Kassel as well… This is all thanks to the blessings of our Lord.”

Kohreshi wept as he struck a prayerful pose.

“The master of this mansion suggests staying for four to five days to recover your health and strength. The maids here seem to be under strict orders, so we cannot leave the mansion,” added Jolina.

“Isn’t that fine? Since the owner of this mansion has said so, we should stay for four to five days. From what I heard, during this time, we will be delivering supplies to the villagers and working to remove the humidity that has plagued us since the village’s founding. Perhaps this is the lord in Agarta, who is one of the few lords in Agarta who still do not recognize Agarta’s king. If so, mentioning his name might lead to repercussions from Agarta’s king. That’s probably why he is secretly aiding us.”

Everyone nodded in agreement with Kohreshi’s words.

“Let’s take advantage of this generosity this time. This is also the guidance of our Lord. Our wishes have been answered. Lady Vielle and Kassel should especially take a good rest. I imagine you’re quite tired,” Kohreshi said tearfully, and everyone assumed a prayerful posture.

“The owner of the mansion is a day away from the capital of Agarta. He is one of the few lords who still do not recognize the Agartan king. Perhaps this is Count Liberg? Lady Vielle…”

Vielle, having regained her usual composure, inquired casually, “Count Liberg?”

“Yes, Count Liberg is a follower of our Crimeana-sama and one of the few lords in Agarta who still do not recognize the Agartan king. Mentioning his name might lead to repercussions from Agarta’s king. That’s probably why he is secretly aiding us,” Jolina explained.

Vielle and the others nodded in agreement.

“We should take advantage of this opportunity. This is also the guidance of our Lord. Our wishes have been answered. Lady Vielle and Kassel, you should rest well. I imagine you’re quite tired.”

Vielle and Kassel decided to accept their stay in the mansion. The hospitality in the mansion was impeccable, with three meals a day, delicious tea-time snacks, and attentive service. They enjoyed days without a single flaw, waking up after a good night’s sleep, and they were very satisfied.

And now, on the fifth day of their stay, as Vielle woke up once again with the blissful sensation of having slept well, she opened her eyes. When she slowly opened her eyes, she was greeted by a completely different sight. There were several soldiers and a man dressed in black. Upon closer inspection, he turned out to be Linos, the king of Agarta. When his eyes met Vielle’s, he grinned and slowly began to speak.

“Good morning. And welcome back.”

Why? How…? Questions raced through Vielle’s mind, and then her thoughts came to a halt.
