Chapter 216: And Then, the Heart Begins to Break

Vielle was crying, her body shaking uncontrollably. Her luxurious white dress, embroidered with golden threads, was now completely soiled as she knelt on the muddy ground. Additionally, black mold spots scattered here and there accentuated the girl’s misery.

Linos slowly squatted down, whispering something to the crouching Vielle. Immediately after, she raised her face abruptly, shaking her head from side to side as she looked into Linos’s eyes.

“If you can’t do it, should I ask for help from Lady Crimeana?” Linos said as he turned to leave.

“Wait! Wait! I understand! I understand!” Vielle screamed once again. Hearing her voice, Linos turned back. Vielle, trembling slightly, began to speak in a choked voice.

“We… we believed… Lady Crimeana… would… bless us… but she didn’t. I, Juvansel Vielle, hereby pledge absolute loyalty to King Agarta, Lord Linos, from now on.”

With that, Vielle collapsed, sobbing on the spot.

“Alright, Vielle. I’ll save you. Come with me,” Linos said.

Linos walked past Vielle and entered the lodge. Vielle, rising like a ghost, followed him with a dazed expression.

“Sister…” Kassel began to speak, sounding worried.

Without even glancing at Kassel and his concerned voice, Vielle followed Linos into the lodge.

It only took a few minutes. Linos came out of the lodge, holding Vielle in his arms.

“Sister! Vielle, sister! Hey! What did you do to my sister?” Kassel yelled at Linos as he descended the lodge stairs.

“Look closely,” Linos said.

“Sister! The spots…!” The purple spots that had marred Vielle’s face were now completely gone, and she had returned to her original beautiful appearance, peacefully asleep.

“Mei! Roni! Chiwang!” Linos called, and three followers emerged from behind.

“Take care of Vielle. She’s probably healed, but examine her just in case,” I said and Chiwang took Vielle and carried her outside. The villagers watched in silence as Vielle was taken away.

“Followers of Crimeana!” Suddenly, Linos’s voice rang out, and all eyes turned to him.

“As you’ve seen, I don’t know how far I can heal, but I can remove the signature purple spots of Luroans. A few months ago, I tried the same with someone displaying similar symptoms, and so far, they haven’t died. If you want help, I’ll give it. In exchange…”

With that, Linos paused, looking around. The faces of the followers froze.

“Your beloved Lady Crimeana won’t save you, and the condition is to pledge absolute loyalty to me. That’s only fair, right? After all, I’m going to be your savior. Repaying a debt is only natural, isn’t it? If anyone can’t accept that, feel free to stay. You can live in this foul-smelling land, in rooms covered in mold, with no food, and choose between dying of illness or starvation. I won’t force anyone. However, if you do pledge loyalty to me, I’ll ensure a minimum standard of living.”

The followers began to murmur and argue, with minor altercations breaking out in the back.

“Well, I don’t have much time, so I’ll give you thirty minutes. Decide within that time. Someone, call Matokal! Mat! Where are you?” Linos shouted, and Matokal immediately appeared.

“Mat, are the generals currently on break?… Have you delivered the message to all the tents? Good. Then, gather everyone at the entrance of the forest in thirty minutes. I’ll be escorting the followers who pledge loyalty to me. Oh, and one more thing. Have some of the generals and a few others come to me. We need to escort the young lady.”

“Understood.”

With that, Matokal disappeared into the depths of the forest.

Upon arriving at the village, Linos immediately put Vielle to sleep. He also cast a dream barrier on both Vielle and Kassel, ensuring they would experience the most comfortable dreams imaginable. Afterward, he instructed Layfence and others to inform the villagers to visit Vielle’s lodge if they were currently suffering from the illness. They were to encourage the sick to seek treatment immediately. Surprisingly, this request was accepted smoothly, and within a few minutes, numerous followers had gathered in front of the lodge.

Exactly thirty minutes after Linos urged the villagers to make their decision, only around five hundred followers remained in front of the lodge. Linos led them into the lodge, accommodating as many as fifty people in each room, where he had them repeat the same oath as Vielle had, loud and clear. Then, he cast the Ultimate Heal spell on them. They stood facing the walls in rows, ensuring that nobody could see the spell being cast.

Linos ordered Matokal to lead the approximately five hundred followers who had pledged loyalty to him to a location about thirty minutes’ walk away from the village. There, they set up a new barrier village, using the same spot where the unit had camped when repelling the Lamalon army. Currently, it served as a training ground for the Agarta army, and they established the barrier village there.

Linos, Mei, Chiwang, Roni, Ilymo, and Matokal then left the village to the outskirts and teleported to the capital’s office. Linos instructed Matokal to prepare supplies and, once ready, bring soldiers to the barrier village. They immediately set off to hold a meeting.

“How did it go, Mei?”

“Yes. It’s likely that the environment played a significant role in causing Luroans’s disease. I need to investigate further to be sure, but I want to compare the conditions of the patients that Master Linos examined.”

Mei’s eyes sparkled, and Chiwang spoke up, “It’s just my personal opinion, but I believe that the mold adhering to their clothing might also be a significant factor in causing Luroans’s disease. I want to investigate that aspect more thoroughly.”

“Alright, I understand. Chiwang, Roni, go ahead.”

They both nodded.

“Tomorrow, we’ll go for an investigation with Soleil as well. And about… rescuing the followers who have asked for help, I think we should do it, too.”

“Indeed. I’d like to examine the followers whom you healed as well.”

“Alright, Roni, please do that. We might be able to find some clues.”

“Master Linos, the food is prepared, and the preparations for deployment are complete.”

“Great, Matokal. You’re quick. Okay, let’s start by teleporting the food.”

Linos headed to the underground food storage facility, which had been prepared when they established the barrier village. He teleported the supplies along with himself to the storage room, ensuring that nothing was visible from the outside. Once that was done, he reported to the Agarta soldiers in the capital, letting them know that the food had been transported to the storage facility. Then, he returned to the capital’s office to attend to remaining tasks.

In the evening, as he returned to his mansion in the capital, Eril and Aliria greeted him. Their smiles comforted him, and he held them close. Matokal informed everyone that he wouldn’t be returning tonight and waited for dinner with his family.

Later that night, after taking a bath and entering his bedroom, he found Rico waiting for him.

“Oh? Rico, where’s Eril?”

“Mei is looking after her.”

“Oh, so that’s why you were taking a bath with Mei.”

“Linos, I have something to talk to you about.”

Rico’s demeanor was unusually serious, a sign that she was genuinely upset.

“What’s wrong?”

“Today… in Crimeana’s village, I heard from Mei that you were holding a girl named Vielle. What exactly do you intend to do?”

Linos’s surroundings felt different. This was the atmosphere when Rico was truly angry.

“No, no, Rico! It’s not what you think. When I said ‘held,’ I meant… I gave her a piggyback ride…”

“A piggyback ride!?… I see. It’s fine then. Do whatever you want to, get a new wife, I don’t mind. But why didn’t you just say that from the beginning? We have preparations to make on our end as well, you know? Well, I just wanted to know a bit, that’s all. Who is this new wife of yours? How old is she? Where is she from? What skills does she have? Or rather, where did you even see her for the first time? Well, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I was just curious.”

“Rico! Rico! Wait! Wait, please!”

Linos embraced Rico tightly. She sighed while breathing through her shoulders, and Linos sealed her lips with his own.
