Chapter 218: Those Who See the Future, Those Who See Despair

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

“What did I do to deserve this?”

In the midst of the forest, an old man’s angry shouts echoed. The elderly gnome, with his white hair, moved through the forest, periodically squatting down to inspect the soil’s condition. Each time he did, he unleashed a stream of unbearable profanities and curses at the top of his lungs.

“Well, well, no need to get so upset…”

Trying to appease the old man with a troubled expression was Mei. When the old man looked at Mei, his previous anger seemed to vanish as he wore a gentler expression.

“Oh, I apologize, Mei-chan. My words got carried away because things are just so terrible. Are your companions also sorry?”

This old man, with a lecherous grin on his face, was a gnome, a spirit of the earth. He had been summoned by Mei to conduct soil research in the village of Crimeana in Agarta.

Since the outbreak of the incurable disease known as Luroans, this village had been covered by a powerful barrier created by Linos, with strict restrictions on people entering and leaving. While the barrier had the effect of preventing any air from escaping, reducing the risk of pathogens spreading outside, caution was still necessary. To enter, one needed Linos’ permission and for him to set up a barrier with a sterile environment effect.

Accompanying Mei to this village were chiwang, Roni, from Pousehai, and Soleil. Since Luroans was only occurring in this village, Mei and her companions suspected that the village’s environment might be a significant factor. That’s why they were investigating the forest’s soil, atmosphere, molds, and other factors, with the intention of collecting samples.

Among them, Soleil was the one who stood out with an unusual degree of sensuality. She gazed leisurely at the forest with a gentle smile on her face. At first glance, it seemed as though she was enjoying a forest bath, but in reality, she was conducting an inquiry with the forest and water spirits.

“For now, the forest and the water seem to be unaffected.”

Soleil, who had been in conversation with the spirits, reported to Mei. The gnome quickly approached Soleil’s feet.

“No, young lady, it’s only for now. If this environment continues as it is, the soil is likely to become contaminated. It’s not just the forest that’s burning. The soil is rapidly losing its vitality. It’s like the soil has fallen ill. Something toxic is breeding within the soil. I’ve never seen anything like this! What could cause it to become this terrible?”

With his eyes wide open, the gnome addressed Soleil. At first glance, it appeared as though he was speaking to her in anger about the soil being contaminated, but in reality, his gaze was directed beneath Soleil’s short skirt, and further, to her ample bosom. Upon closer inspection, there were small protrusions visible on her chest. Having noticed this, the gnome didn’t divert his gaze at all, not even blinking.

Due to his extensive knowledge and experience, the gnome deduced that what he was observing beneath Soleil’s skirt were her inner panties, commonly known as “show panties,” and this was not his point of interest. For a moment, he seemed disappointed, but then his attention shifted to her chest. That, he found captivating. It was a well-shaped bosom, and he found himself quite enchanted by Soleil’s breasts. However, what he didn’t know was that Soleil was wearing nipple-enhanced lingerie, known as “NuBra.”

Originally, Soleil had great confidence in her own body and felt no resistance to receiving such lascivious glances. In fact, she considered these looks a form of admiration. However, since becoming Linos’ wife and being influenced by Riko and Mei, she had reduced her wardrobe choices for more modest attire. Soleil had adopted Mei’s philosophy that only loved ones should be allowed to see one’s skin. However, after learning about the gnome’s characteristics from Mei, Soleil decided to bring out the lingerie she used to wear before getting married as a strategy to entice the gnome, using her sensuality to guide him effectively.

“Oh my, as expected of you, Mr. Gnome. You’re truly amazing. I’m so curious about why these toxins are proliferating in the soil of this forest.”

Saying this, Soleil playfully shook her body, causing her large bosom to sway.

“Oh, leave it to me. I’ll investigate, no worries. I’ll find out and let you know!”

With that, the gnome disappeared into the depths of the forest.

“Mei-sama, I’m sorry. I ended up summoning the gnome that Mei-sama should have controlled…”

“It’s alright, don’t worry. Thanks to Soleil-san, we might be able to assess the contamination level of the soil we wanted to investigate. I couldn’t have motivated Mr. Gnome as effectively as you did. I’m grateful. By the way, it seems Mr. Gnome has a preference for well-endowed women…”

“Well, you know, old folks tend to be that way.”

They both laughed. At that moment, Chiwang and Roni, who had been in another location, returned to join them.

“Mei-sama, we’ve finished collecting mold samples. It appears that several types of mold are present. Hopefully, one of them can provide a clue to the outbreak of Luroans.”

“Yes, Chiwang-san. We should securely seal those molds and take them back to the lab for further analysis.”

“Understood.”

“As for my part, Mei-sama, I’ve collected blood samples from the infected patients.”

With a little hop, Roni lowered her head as she spoke. She had been collecting blood samples from the devoted followers of Crimeana, who continued to reject Linos’ healing and clung steadfastly to their faith, remaining in the village. It was clear that asking these followers for cooperation directly would result in refusal, and indeed, when Mei and her team arrived in the village and began their investigations, most of the followers not only refused to cooperate but also engaged in overt sabotage, hurling insults, and even throwing stones from hiding places among the trees.

Ultimately, such interference was thwarted by Linos’ barrier, and in some cases, those who attempted violence would be shocked unconscious the moment they touched the barrier. Nevertheless, the resistance from the followers was still fierce. So, Roni had enlisted the help of fairies to obtain sleep-inducing scales, which she used to sedate the followers while collecting their blood.

“Well, let’s take these back to the laboratory for now. I’m sure there must be a clue to eradicating Luroans among these. Oh, Mr. Gnome, we’re heading back!”

“Alright, got it!”

With a handful of soil, the gnome returned to Mei. They then left the village behind for the time being.

Further into the forest from the village, a refuge camp for the followers of Crimeana had been set up. Here, there was a source of fresh water, and although condensation still occurred, it was not as severe as before. This change was a result of Linos ordering Soleil to reduce humidity, based on Mei’s suggestion that the outbreak of Luroans might be related to condensation.

Despite these improvements, the camp was constantly under attack from monsters due to its location deep in the forest, with attacks occurring day and night. Currently, they were managing to repel the creatures with their strong soldiers, but these soldiers were slowly wearing down. At this rate, they would run out of food within a year, and the viability of their current fighting force was uncertain.

Kassel was growing increasingly anxious. He was about to turn nine years old, and while he undoubtedly possessed exceptional intelligence and knowledge compared to other children his age, he was still just a child. Until now, he had been surrounded by charismatic relatives like Vielle and capable bishops, allowing him to fully utilize his talents. However, when he found himself in a leadership position, he felt helpless and lacked any viable solutions.

He excelled at “checking and improving” things, but creating something out of nothing was not his strong suit. He was oblivious to this fact, and naturally, no one around him had realized it either. In fact, there were high expectations that this young Kassel would come up with a miraculous solution. However, Kassel himself was frustrated by his inability to think of anything given the current situation.

“Darn it… What should I do? Even if I request assistance from the Theocracy, the rivers are flooding… I have to… I have to get my sister back… What should I do… What should I…”

Kassel agonized while slumping over his desk. Unlike Vielle, who tended to avoid facing reality, Kassel was determined to confront it head-on, but the more he did, the bleaker the future appeared to him.

Kassel’s mind was slowly being consumed by despair.
