Chapter 220: Tales of Women’s Fortunes

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

In the morning, after finishing breakfast, Rico, along with Ferris, Luala, and Matokal, teleported towards the capital. Today, I had taken a day off, and it was a day of babysitting with Mei.

Eril and Aliria were both at the stage where they were trying to stand up on their own. They would babble various words like “mama” and “mommy” while spending their time happily. Watching them, it was interesting to see their distinct personalities.

Eril seemed like a go-getter. Even though she couldn’t walk yet, she was attempting to. She would take a few steps but would quickly fall flat. Instead of crying, she would get up and start walking again. Her determination to not give up, even after falling, was quite inspiring. She would probably start walking soon. Watching her actions, she seemed to resemble the late Eril in some ways.

On the other hand, Aliria was cautious. While she did attempt to take a few steps while holding onto something, she didn’t try to walk on her own, perhaps influenced by seeing Eril fall. However, she would take one step, then another, holding onto something as she went. It seemed like she was the type who didn’t make many mistakes.

Mei was diligently taking care of our daughters. Additionally, even Fairy, fluttering above their heads, became a great playmate for the girls. Looking at them like this, the three of them seemed like sisters.

As I watched the children and Fairy play together, I spoke to Mei.

“I thought once we had Kirisrei’s antidote we could rest, but now we have the emergence of Luroans. Mei doesn’t seem to get much rest.”

“No, I manage to get some rest because of the children. I’m more worried about Chiwan and Roni. But lately, Sidi-chan has been helping me a lot, so that’s been a significant relief.”

“Oh, right, Sidi is good at analysis, isn’t she?”

“Yes. Dwarves thoroughly analyze materials before crafting weapons and armor. Analytical skills to maximize the properties of objects are essential, and in that regard, Sidi-chan is very talented. We have made progress in identifying the source and countermeasures for Luroans. All we need now is to prove it with experimental results.”

“Mei, Sidi, and the others may be burdened, but I’m counting on you for the Luroans’ countermeasures, okay?”

“Yes, leave it to me.”

Seeing Mei’s radiant smile, my heart was comforted.

At the same time, in a guest room at Agarta’s reception hall, a meeting between Rico and Vielle was underway.

Initially, Rico had requested a private meeting, but it was deemed too risky, so Matokal was present as well. Naturally, Rico had Linos’s barrier in place, ensuring she wouldn’t come to harm. However, Matokal had an uneasy feeling about this meeting and was worried about leaving Rico alone.

“Everything you believed in has crumbled, and you’ve lost all sense of purpose in life. You don’t know what to do. I understand all that.”

Without much of a greeting, Rico began the conversation. Vielle continued to gaze at her with vacant eyes.

“I’ve been through the same. Long ago, I was distanced from those I served, some were even slain, and I myself was imprisoned, nearly losing my life. By my own brother. At that time, I was also left dumbfounded and lost. The pride of being the First Princess… I didn’t want to be slandered. Maybe I should have taken my own life, but I didn’t have the courage. Then came the order to marry Agarta’s King, Linos, a man I didn’t even love, and worse, he was a former slave. Forced marriage… I didn’t know what to do.”

Vielle remained expressionless. However, Rico continued without paying it any mind.

“I’m sure you’ve sacrificed more than anyone for the Crimeana Holy Kingdom. Even if you don’t say it, I understand. You’ve adhered to the teachings, been strict with yourself, endured and sacrificed so much for the kingdom. Everything for the sake of the Holy Kingdom… And yet, despite all your efforts, you became infected with the illness and even committed what was seen as blasphemy against the gods.”

Vielle’s eyes slowly moved sideways. Rico smiled gently.

“…It must have been tough.”

The moment she heard those words, tears flowed from Vielle’s eyes. She then began to cry silently. Rico approached her slowly, gently patting her back.

“It was tough, so tough. There was nothing you could do with my own strength, right? You ended up denying yourself, didn’t you? It must have been tough. I went through the same. I understand. I really understand your feelings,” Rico said softly, holding Vielle’s hands and speaking gently.

“Now, you’re thinking that you want to die, aren’t you? But you can’t do it yourself, so you wish someone would kill you, right?” Vielle nodded slowly through her tears.

“You’re an incredible person. I’ve never seen anyone with such a strong sense of responsibility. But, Vielle-san, how about looking at it this way? This is not absolute. You can continue down the path you believe in. I would be pleased if you could see it as just one way of thinking,” Rico paused. For a while, she didn’t say anything, just held Vielle’s hands. Vielle sensed the atmosphere and slowly lifted her face to look at Rico.

“You can die anytime. If you have the will, you can die anytime,” Rico said with a gentle smile, uttering grim words that made Vielle widen her eyes.

“But, you’re alive now. You’re being kept alive. Isn’t there some meaning in that?”

“I… caused many believers to die… tarnished the honor of the Crimeana Faith. Surely, this is a divine punishment. To suffer until death.”

“No. I actually think it’s the opposite.”

“The opposite?”

“I felt the same way. When I was forced to marry my husband, I thought similar things as you. But I changed my way of thinking. Maybe, there’s a reason for this. Maybe, I thought, I should try to find the meaning of why I’m being kept alive.”

“Has Lady Ricolette found the meaning of living?”

Rico wore a beaming smile as she spoke, “Yes, I found it relatively easily. The meaning of my life is to support King Linos of Agarta and help this country become a peaceful nation without war. This was originally my goal and a dream that was shattered. But by helping my husband, I found that I could once again pursue the dream I’ve had since I was a child. Depending on how you perceive and approach things, you can change them in any way.”

Vielle’s eyes moved restlessly from side to side. Rico released her hands and sat up straight with a serious expression, then continued, “Lady Vielle, could you consider once again what the meaning of being kept alive is? Perhaps, your Crimeana-sama, the deity you believe in, has a mission for you? Is the current Crimeana Faith truly in line with the will of the Supreme Deity?”

With that, Rico softened her expression again. “Well, this is just my own perspective, so you don’t have to accept it. I was simply curious about someone in a situation similar to mine. But I’m glad we could have this conversation. You’re even more responsible than I thought. It’s nice to have met you.”

Rico seemed genuinely pleased as she spoke. Seeing her like this, Vielle felt a slight weight lift from her heart.

An hour later, laughter could be heard from the room where the meeting took place. Rico, Vielle, and Matokal sat together, sipping tea, eating sweets, and enjoying a conversation.

While Vielle enjoyed the conversation with the two women, she thought about what Rico had said regarding the meaning of being kept alive…
