Chapter 225: Madness in Cassel

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Cassel, panting heavily, his eyes wide, teeth bared, glared at Linos with a demonic expression. Linos, in turn, looked down at him with cold eyes.

“Your beloved sister, as you know her, is not here. Your dear sister is like she’s dead.”

“Ugaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!”

Cassel shouted with a voice so powerful that it made one wonder where such strength was hidden in the boy’s small body. Then, with wide-open eyes, he turned on his heel and rushed out of the room. Linos was left dumbfounded by this unexpected reaction.

“Really… Talking to himself and storming out alone. He didn’t even listen to what I had to say.”

Linos called for someone and ordered Vielle to be guarded as he followed Cassel.

Cassel was running at full speed, tears streaming down his face. That pure and beautiful sister Vielle was no more. The intelligent and strong sister was now… The current sister was defiled, corrupted, speaking vile and obscene words, turned into a despicable woman. That wasn’t Vielle anymore. She wasn’t the sister he had admired, chased after, and loved.

What had he been desperately thinking all this time? He felt foolish for trying so hard to find a way to get his sister back. With an inexplicable anger, he ran to the village’s exit.

As soon as he left the village, the Agarta army led by Matokal had blocked the entrance, but Cassel paid no attention and ran towards the troops he had led. By the time Linos caught up with him, he was already on horseback.

“Everyone, take the medicine!”

Cassel shouted loudly. At his command, the soldiers of Crimeana took out the medicine from their pockets and swallowed it without hesitation.

“What are they doing?”

On horseback, Matokal watched with a puzzled expression. The Crimeana soldiers, with wide eyes and astonished expressions, all raised voices that sounded neither like screams nor laughter, towards the sky. And soon, their voices subsided, leaving them with unfocused eyes, directed at the Agarta army.

“Something’s not right! Prepare for combat, everyone! Lord Linos…! Get back!”

Matokal quickly ordered her soldiers to prepare for combat and tried to evacuate Linos into the village. However, Linos was already on Ilymo and had prepared for combat. Not only that, but without him noticing, Layfence had also joined Linos, and they were both ready for battle.

“Kill them! Kill the traitors! Kill those who have been deceived by the evil god! Kill them all!”

Cassel shouted from the rear of the formation. As if in response to his voice, the 1,000 infantry and cavalry soldiers of Crimeana began their charge. When they saw this, Cassel turned on his heel and left the scene.

“Screaaaaam!”

“Hyriiiiiiii!”

The soldiers let out strange cries that didn’t sound like human voices at all as they charged. On closer inspection, the faces of all the soldiers were filled with ecstatic smiles. The eerie sight momentarily startled even the Agarta soldiers. However, among them, there was one who calmly analyzed the situation: Matokal.

“Get it together! Deploy! Flank them!”

Matokal’s commanding voice reached the Agarta soldiers, and they regained their composure. They quickly split into two groups, left and right, with the village entrance at the center. Just as the Crimeana soldiers were about to attack the front-line Agarta unit under Matokal’s command, the units on both flanks launched an attack simultaneously.

“Oh! As expected of Matokal. A splendid strategy.”

Layfence couldn’t help but voice his admiration at the village entrance. The Agarta army coordinated brilliantly, surrounding the Crimeana soldiers from three sides.

“Huh? What’s that over there?”

It’s no wonder that Linos found it puzzling. The situation was overwhelmingly in favor of the Agarta side, and the Crimeana soldiers were being cut with swords, pierced with spears, torn apart by magic, and burned. However, they showed no signs of fear. They attacked the Agarta soldiers with a look of ecstasy on their faces, even as blood flowed from their bodies. No matter how many times they were cut, pierced, or injured, they continued to assault like zombies.

“Wind Blade!”

Wind magic was cast into the midst of the Crimeana army. Linos was the one who unleashed it. In an instant, dozens of soldiers were split in two. However, the Crimeana soldiers paid no attention and continued to thrust their blades at the Agarta soldiers in front of them.

“What’s wrong with them? They’re laughing even though their comrades are dying.”

Linos muttered in annoyance and concentrated magic in his right arm again.

“Inferno Burst!”

Once again, magic was shot into the heart of the Crimeana army. Since it was a level 5 fire magic, the surrounding area turned into a sea of flames.

“Now, everyone, retreat for now! Fall back into the village! Fall back!”

When Linos gave the order, the Agarta soldiers who had been attacking systematically began to retreat. First, the units deployed on both flanks gradually retreated toward the village entrance while still attacking the enemy. As the units on both flanks entered the village, the Crimeana soldiers appeared as if leaping out of the sea of fire and attacked Matokal’s unit.

“I’ll take care of it, milord! Everyone, fall back!”

Matokal’s unit, led by her, continued to fall back while defeating the soldiers emerging from the flames. Their retreat was executed flawlessly without looking back. However, one soldier who emerged from the flames clung to Matokal’s horse while enveloped in flames. Astonishingly, the man still had an expression of ecstasy on his face.

“Heheheeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!”

Suddenly, the startled horse embraced by the fiery man began to buck wildly. In that moment, Matokal’s body was thrown into the air and slammed onto the ground. Immediately afterward, the Crimeana soldiers attacked the fallen Matokal.

“Mat! Wind Cutter!”

Linos shouted, using wind magic to sever the soldiers’ necks who were assaulting Matokal like they were in a frenzy. Right after that, she was carried into the village by the Agarta soldiers, and Linos confirmed this before casting a powerful barrier over the entire village.

“It’s safe now. Those guys won’t be able to enter here. However, don’t let your guard down and secure the perimeter of the village. Keep an eye on the villagers as well!”

After issuing these orders to the soldiers, Linos dismounted from Ilymo and headed towards Matokal. Naturally, Matokal and the other Agarta soldiers were under the protection of Linos’s barrier, and she wouldn’t be harmed. However, Matokal seemed to be unconscious or unresponsive. Her face had turned pale.

“Mat! Hey, Mat! Wake up!”

Linos tried to lift Matokal, but there was no response. Upon closer inspection, the ground where she had been lying was stained with blood.

“This is… blood? Why? I’ve cast a barrier on Mat, so why is she bleeding? Hey, Mat! Mat!”

Matokal showed no signs of responding to Linos’s calls. Linos exchanged a glance with Layfence, and immediately, with Matokal still in his arms, he teleported somewhere.

“All troops, guard the barrier around the village! Do not let the villagers leave their rooms! Don’t worry. Our king’s barrier cannot be broken by anyone. However, don’t be careless! If you see anyone suspicious, capture them! Disperse!”

Upon Layfence’s orders, the Agarta soldiers, without showing any signs of panic, headed to guard the village protected by the barrier.

Where Linos had teleported to was the Agarta Medical Research Institute where Mei and the others were.

“Mei! Mei! Roni! Chiwan!”

“Master!? What’s happened to you!? Huh? Mat-chan?”

Out of the room, startled by Linos’s voice, came Mei. Immediately following, Roni rushed out as well.

“Matokal… she’s bleeding, and it won’t stop.”

“Let me see!”

Allowing Matokal to be placed on the floor, Mei immediately began to examine her.

“Roni-san! Get Mat-chan into the medical room right away! Prepare!”

“Understood.”

With a small bow, Roni teleported away. Mei lifted Matokal.

“Mei, it’s okay. I’ll take Matokal.”

“No, Master. Please refrain from doing so.”

“Why, Mei?”

“Please, leave it to us here and refrain from doing so. It’s all right. There’s no immediate danger to her life.”

“Mei…”

Linos couldn’t say anything in response to Mei’s unusual demeanor. Mei held Matokal while looking Linos in the eyes intently, slowly nodding. Then, she quickly left the room. Linos watched her until she disappeared from view.

After a while, Linos teleported back to the barrier-protected village, and before him stood Layfence, his back turned. He had his arms folded and was gazing intently outside the barrier.

“General, Matokal…”

Before he could finish his sentence, the veteran general raised his right hand and slowly turned his head towards Linos.

“Please, look outside the barrier.”

When Linos turned his eyes toward the outside of the barrier, he witnessed a gruesome scene of Crimeana soldiers killing each other with ecstatic expressions, all while still enveloped in the sensation of euphoria.

“This… this is…”

Linos was rendered speechless by the sight of such an overwhelming spectacle. The old general sighed slowly.

“Observe. Outside the barrier.”

As Linos followed the general’s words and looked outside, he saw Crimeana soldiers locked in a horrifying fratricidal battle, still maintaining their expressions of ecstasy even as they lost limbs. One man, despite losing both arms, clung to another man’s head as if attempting to bite him. The other man was already dead. Linos was left speechless at the sight.

“Even after losing a hand, a foot, both hands, both feet, they continue to kill each other with ecstasy. Look at that man there. Despite losing both arms, he’s biting another man’s head. And that other man is already dead. What is fighting to them? What are they living for? Is this the life they desired…”

The old general muttered in disbelief, but also with a tinge of sadness. It felt as if his back had shrunk a little.

“Perhaps it’s because of the drug they were drinking… that damn brat!”

Linos, fueled by the faith of the faithful who clung to him, harbored deep hatred for Cassel, who had forced them into this bloody battle.
