Chapter 232: The Incurable Disease

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

After Vieille and the others left Agartha, Linos and his people had regained peace. Linos continued to travel between Agartha and the imperial capital, paying attention to the movements of Crimea while diligently handling political affairs.

Rico remained in charge of raising their daughters, and Mei immersed herself in research. Agartha’s medical research institute had become world-renowned for discovering the transmission route of the Kirisrei virus and developing a vaccine and a cure. Moreover, the institute’s reputation soared as Mei distributed these medicines freely worldwide. The institute, and Mei by extension, were thriving on enormous donations from various countries. The reason for this generosity was the institute’s naming rights system, where donors could have their names attached to medicines and buildings in exchange for their contributions. This began when King Sundanji of the Nike Kingdom made a generous donation to Agartha as a gesture of thanks for the Kirisrei vaccine.

Initially, Linos was reluctant to accept the donation, but Nike insisted. With the funds, Linos built a new wing at the institute to develop more effective treatments, including an improved version of the Kirisrei cure, which was then named “Sundanji.” This move improved Sundanji Country’s image significantly, shifting it from a nation plagued by Kirisrei to one of healing and hope. Seeing this advertising power, other countries eagerly donated to the Agartha Medical Research Institute to enhance their national images.

With abundant funding, the institute now focused on researching Gaisha, a challenging disease to cure, while expanding its hospital to accommodate more patients and advance medical technology.

As autumn deepened and Linos’ birthday approached, he decided to visit his grandmother. He had become somewhat distant from her during the conflict with the Crimea Church. On this visit, he brought a new confectionery product to share with her. (T/N: Grandmother is the fox elder, don’t know when their relationship got like this but it translates to this)

“Oh, it’s been a while,” said his grandmother, her eyes softening at the sight of Linos. She always looked forward to his visits, knowing he would bring something sweet.

“It’s been a long time, Grandmother. I’m sorry for only asking favors this year. I’ve brought a new sweet for you to try,” Linos said, unfolding a rectangular paper package to reveal a golden, beautifully crafted cake.

“This is a cake called ‘Castella.'”

“Oh? Castella, is it? Let’s have it then,” she said, commanding her attendants to bring the cake to her. She devoured it whole, like a banana, to the surprise of those watching. Sandieyu, frowning, asked Linos, “Is this cake meant to be eaten in one bite?”

“No… Normally, it’s cut into small pieces and enjoyed bit by bit.”

“Indeed, indeed. Grandmother, such an unladylike way of eating…”

Before Sandieyu could finish her usual scolding, the grandmother’s exclamation filled the air. “What is this? It’s delicious! I love it! Make sure to offer this as well! But not to Sandieyu.”

“Grandmother!”

“Quiet, I say… Hm? You seem to have fewer titles now, Linos. Your skills are too numerous to follow, but it seems a bit clearer now.”

“Eh? My titles have decreased?”

Linos hastily cast an appraisal on himself.

Human Heart Capture: Blessing LV5, Education LV5, Barrier Magic LV5, Presence Detection LV5, Magic Detection LV5, Evasion LV5, Insight LV5

Human Heart Capture… Creates strong trusting relationships among nearby humans.

“Oh! Some titles are gone, and there’s a new one. It seems that my maxed skills have merged again. The new title seems to relate to building trust.”

“It seems that this skill builds trust among those you interact with, proportional to your MP. In your case, with almost limitless MP, most people in Agartha are bound by trust.”

“That’s an incredible skill…”

“The human heart is fragile. No matter how powerful the magic or weapons, without trust, they can easily fall. In this sense, your skill might offer more protection than any barrier.”

“As a barrier master, I think it’s the best skill.”

Unknowingly, Linos had acquired a tremendous skill. The fact that his companions and he were bound by a strong trust was the best outcome. Perhaps this skill was why the people of Agartha showed no interest in Crimea’s doctrine or proselytization.

After thanking his grandmother, Linos left, planning to ask Peyris to mass-produce Castella and teleport back to his residence in the imperial capital. Finding the back door slightly open, he entered quietly, overhearing a conversation in the dining room.

“…This medicine…”

“Thank you. I don’t want to suffer like that again…”

“Don’t worry. Mei and I made it with great care; it should not burden your body.”

“Roni, thank you. Please keep this a secret from Linos.”

“Understood.”

“I don’t want to cause unnecessary worry.”

“Rico, it’s okay. Roni and I will support you fully.”

“Mei, Roni, I’m sorry for the trouble.”

“Don’t worry. The medicine we gave you looks like Jasro fruit. Just take one pill each morning. It doesn’t require water, and no one will suspect anything.”

“Thank you, Mei, Roni. I’ll be sure to repay you.”

“No, our only wish is for you, Rico, to live without pain…”

Feeling a chill down his spine, Linos realized this wasn’t a conversation for healthy people. Why disguise medicine as Jasro fruit? Why hide it from him? What was the suffering Rico had experienced? What was happening to her?

Stepping outside to take a deep breath, Linos re-entered the house to confront Rico, only to find it empty. Had the conversation he overheard been an illusion?

“What’s wrong? What happened?”

“Whoa! Peyris… Welcome back.”

Peyris looked at me quizzically. As I was dealing with this, Ferris, Luala, and Gon returned, and Gon reported new movements from the Crimea Church, leading to various discussions. Meanwhile, Mei entered the dining room with Aliria.

“Daddy, hug!”

“Whoa, Aliria! Come here!”

Before I knew it, it had turned into our usual lively dinner time.

Roni was also having dinner with us today, apparently here for a check-up on Rico and the kids. So, the conversation I overheard wasn’t an illusion. But it felt awkward to ask about it in this setting, especially as she was focused on eating the Roarg fish, a white fish with a taste similar to sea bream. She seemed to love its grilled flavor, devouring a whole fish with relish, even the cheeks and eyes, and meticulously eating the meat off the bones.

While admiring her appetite, I was waiting for a chance to talk to Roni, but the opportunity never came. I ended up being ushered into the bath with my two daughters.

After being tossed around by my energetic daughters and washing each other, we finally got out of the bath. Just then, I remembered it was Soleil’s day with me. I had intended to talk to Rico, but Soleil, knowing or not knowing my thoughts, quickly took the initiative, almost overwhelming me.

The next night, when I finally had a moment alone with Rico, I decided to ask her about the situation.

“Rico, there’s something I want to ask.”

“What is it?”

“It’s about your health.”

“Have you noticed something?”

“…”

“It’s a good time to tell you. Linos, I was going to say no today, but for a while now… I might not be able to be with you.”

“Rico, what do you mean? Is it that bad?”

“No… Mei and Roni made medicine for me, so I’m okay now.”

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier? Let me use healing magic. Just wait.”

“It’s useless. Please don’t.”

“Useless?”

“Yes, useless. It’s not something that can be cured with healing magic.”

“Rico… you mean…”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“You mean you have an incurable disease that even Mei and Roni can’t heal!”

I couldn’t help but raise my voice. Rico looked at me with wide eyes in surprise.

“Incurable disease…? What are you talking about?”

“Healing magic won’t work, right?”

“Linos… No, it’s not like that. I am…”

Rico took my hand and placed it on her belly.

“Eh? This means…”

“Yes. I’m pregnant.”

“Pregnant!? Really? Are you serious?”

“Yes, I’m about two months along. I was planning to tell you when things settled down… I’ll give birth to a boy this time.”

“Rico! Rico! Rico! Rico!”

I hugged her tightly, maybe too tightly, as she exclaimed in pain. I quickly let go.

“Linos, you’ll crush the baby.”

“Sorry… But why did you need medicine from Mei and Roni? Morning sickness?”

“When you’re pregnant… you know… that stops…”

“Ah… that. Right.”

“It’s not a burden on my body, and everything is going smoothly, so don’t worry.”

“Rico… Take care of yourself. Give birth to a healthy child.”

“Yes, I will. I’ll definitely give birth to a healthy child.”

Rico smiled broadly. She was incredibly cute.

“I’m really, really happy. I’m so thankful to God.”

“Did you say something, Rico?”

“No, I didn’t say anything.”

“I thought I heard something… Well, never mind. I’m such a fool. I didn’t notice Rico’s pregnancy and thought she had an incurable disease… Sorry, I’m really sorry.”

As I scratched my head and apologized, Rico smiled and spoke.

“No. Actually, I do have a disease that won’t heal until I die. You were right, Linos.”

“What!? Seriously!? What disease?”

I asked, sitting upright on the bed and swallowing nervously. Seeing this, Rico smiled sweetly again.

“It’s… the disease of love. I will love you, Linos, until I die.”

“Rico…”

I hugged Rico again, this time gently, as if holding a treasure. I vowed in my heart to protect this precious Rico for the rest of my life.
