Chapter 233: The Chief’s Order

“No, I don’t want to!”

“Oh, come on, don’t say that…”

“I don’t want what I don’t want!”

The one puffing up in anger was Roni. Her long ears were slowly swaying to the side, a sure sign of her anger. Incidentally, her emotions always manifested through her ears. When they twirled around, she was thinking hard; when hungry, they would droop. There were other indications as well, but let’s skip those for now. The point is, she was angry.

“Roni…”

Chiwan, sounding exasperated, was watching her with folded arms and a stern gaze.

“I’m not saying you must marry right away. There’s just someone who wants to meet you. Why not just meet him and see?”

“I do not wish to marry, and that’s final.”

“He’s a distinguished researcher from the Kingdom of Labad. A very capable man, and he’s the second son, too. He doesn’t need to return to his homeland or inherit the family business. He’s even said he wouldn’t mind settling down in Agartha. You don’t find men like him often, you know?”

“I don’t care if he’s the first or the eighth son. I’m not interested in marriage!”

Chiwan’s frustration was understandable. Several proposals had been brought to Roni, a talented researcher herself. Not just from fellow researchers, but also nobles, royalty, and even King Sundanji himself. But she had refused them all without even meeting any of them.

“I just don’t want to.”

“I understand your feelings, Roni, but at least meet him once before deciding. Or, is there someone else you have in mind?”

“No… That’s… n-no, there isn’t.”

“…Roni, just remember, Linos is absolutely off-limits.”

“Impossible!”

“It’s not Linos?”

“Of course not. I have my principles. Besides, I wouldn’t want to cause trouble for his family. If his household were to fall apart, I’d starve.”

“You… You’re not mistaking Linos’s house for a restaurant, are you?”

“Of course not! Ha-ha-ha…”

“Anyway, just meet him once.”

“It’s so troublesome…”

“Don’t say your thoughts out loud! Roni, this is an order from the chief. He’s a friend of my benefactor. Do me a favor and meet him in a week.”

“Calling me out for another marriage proposal… I wish they’d stop…”

Why did others have to meddle in her marriage? Annoyed, Roni marched through the long corridors of the research institute. Bursting into the room, she found Mei and Clarina compiling experimental data.

“Sorry, I’m late.”

Roni bowed quickly. Mei welcomed her with a smile, while Clarina looked on with her usual serene expression.

“How was it with Chiwan?” Mei asked.

“As expected, it was about marriage. He got angry when I refused.”

“Oh dear, that sounds tough,” said Clarina, casually offering Roni a chair.

“I ended up agreeing to meet him.”

“That’s good to hear.”

Roni was irritated by Clarina’s nonchalant tone but tried not to show it.

“What’s good about it? He’s probably just trying to get close to Mei or Linos through me. I have no interest in such an ambitious person.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. If he truly loved me, why wouldn’t he approach me directly? Why involve Chiwan… I don’t like it.”

“But, why not meet him once? You might be surprised.”

“Mei, he’s a second son. He has to establish his own house. I see right through him. He wants to marry me to gain access to Agartha Research Institute.”

“Maybe you’re misjudging him…”

Mei tilted her head.

“I have a feeling he might be a good person,” Clarina interjected, placing tea and snacks on the table.

“Just meet him once. If you don’t like him, then refuse.”

Mei nodded in agreement.

“That’s right, Roni. Chiwan wouldn’t force you into marriage. And if it comes to that, Linos and I will intervene. Don’t worry.”

“Alright…”

Reluctantly, Roni agreed. After discussing experimental results, she teleported to Linos’s residence in the imperial capital for a prenatal checkup on Rico.

“I think Mei is right,” Rico said after her examination, adjusting her clothes.

“Is that so…”

“People can surprise you. Even if it’s an unwanted encounter, he wants to meet you. There might be some connection.”

“Okay…”

“Ultimately, the decision is yours, Roni. If you really dislike it, just say no. I’ll support you either way. Don’t worry. Now, let’s stop discussing this and have dinner. Linos made dumplings today. Would you like to join us?”

“I’d be happy to.”

In the dining room, Linos was busy preparing a large pot of fried rice. He placed it on the table along with dumplings, fried chicken, salad, and tofu.

“Hey Roni, eat up. I made extra today. Help yourself to the buffet.”

Ferris and Peyris brought out the food, managing the heavy trays with ease. Roni’s stomach growled at the sight.

After eating her fill, Linos asked, “So, Roni, you’re having a matchmaking meeting?”

“Yes. I’ll decide after the meeting.”

“That’s good. But if a Pousehai marries a human, what happens to your teleportation ability?”

“It’s fine. Pousehai children will be born regardless of the partner. If it’s a male, there’s a fifty-fifty chance.”

“Fascinating. So even if you marry a human, your children will be Pousehai.”

“Yes, exactly.”

“How old are you now?”

“25.”

“That old already? I thought you were younger. Well, at your age, you can make your own decisions.”

“Yes, I’ll decide and let you know.”

“I look forward to hearing about it.”

After leaving Linos’s house, Roni teleported to her own room. She fell into a deep, contented sleep for the first time in a while.
