Chapter 243: Over My Dead Body

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Upon hearing the request from his junior disciple Tomerail, Mr. Gen’s eyes briefly sparkled, but soon he dropped his shoulders and muttered weakly.

“Appreciate the thought… but, boss, I don’t think I can make it.”

“What’s wrong, Mr. Gen? Is something bothering you?” Linos asked.

“No… it’s not that… It’s just… my wife…”

Hearing his words, everyone seemed to remember something and let out a collective sigh. It was known that Mr. Gen’s wife was quite jealous, to the point where infidelity was completely out of the question. Linos had met her a few times and remembered her as a robust, strong-willed woman.

“I’d love to visit the pleasure district again after so long… But if I mentioned that, I’d end up being made to kneel and hit on the knees with a ruler.”

“That’s… quite a punishment.”

“I could figure something out if she wasn’t around… but if I said I was going out for fun now, she’d definitely suspect something. So… just go and enjoy yourselves without me.”

Mr. Gen said this with a tinge of sadness. Tomerail stood up and addressed him.

“What are you saying, big brother! You’re our leader! We can’t go without you! It wouldn’t be the same!”

“Tomerail…”

Tears welled up in Mr. Gen’s eyes. Tomerail then turned to Linos and spoke rapidly.

“Boss! Please, find a way to let big brother join us at the pleasure district! We’re all willing to bow our heads to his wife if needed. Please, make it happen!”

“Hmm,” Linos pondered, looking up at the ceiling, then spoke slowly, “I don’t know if it’ll work but…”

Everyone listened intently to Linos’s words, and then the room fell into a deep silence.

———–

“Why so serious? What is it?”

Mr. Gen always thought of his wife as a fearsome woman. How did he end up marrying such a woman? Originally, she was a maid in his master’s house. They started talking after he casually spoke to her, and eventually got married through his master’s mediation. She was lovely back then…

As Mr. Gen was lost in these bittersweet memories, a booming sound echoed from the depths of his being – his wife’s angry voice.

“What is it? Speak up!”

Mr. Gen reflexively began to apologize and unconsciously knelt down. He glanced at his hands and slowly began to speak as instructed by Linos, his eyes distant as if remembering something.

“Well… the boss came today. He praised us carpenters for our hard work.”

“That’s nice. And then?”

“He said he’s taking us to the pleasure district as a reward… But don’t worry… I won’t go. The boss and Tomerail said they can’t take me because my wife is jealous. They said I should go back. I’d be lying if I said I don’t want to go… I feel ashamed.”

Mr. Gen sighed deeply, occasionally glancing at his hand which had some written lines. If his wife saw this, he knew he wouldn’t be in one piece. It was a once-in-a-lifetime act for him.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang. Mr. Gen closed his eyes tightly. When he opened them, he saw his wife’s hand on the table – probably the same golden arm that had knocked him unconscious countless times before. He felt a shiver down his spine as she began to speak slowly.

“…It’s frustrating. If I don’t let you go, they’ll think I’m a narrow-minded wife… Fine. Go ahead. It’s a rare invitation from the boss. You have a reputation to uphold, after all. But just this once!”

“…Thank you, dear!” Mr. Gen bowed deeply in gratitude.

“Don’t do that! It’s bad luck to bow like that when I’m still alive! …Wait, what’s that on your hand? It’s dirty. Let me see.”

“No, this is just… work dirt… I’ll go take a bath.”

Mr. Gen quickly left the room. The next day, he joyfully thanked Linos, needless to say.

While Mr. Gen was battling his wife, Linos was reporting the day’s events to his own wives, including Rico.

“…So, that’s what happened.”

The room fell silent after the explanation. Linos and Gon sat side by side at the dining table, facing the rest of the family, who sat opposite them, like jurors in a court.

“I understand,” Rico broke the silence without changing her expression.

“And, is Linos going to the pleasure district too?”

“Ah, no… I…”

“Go ahead.”

“What?”

Linos was speechless at Rico’s unexpected approval.

“Gon can’t handle it alone, right? The King of Maintia is… I haven’t met him yet, but he seems like a handful. It won’t do without Linos. Go ahead, don’t mind me. Mei, Sidy, Soleil, Mat, Ferris, Luala, Peyris, Fairi, Ilymo, Jenaha, Itra… We all understand Linos’s position. Please, go.” (T/N: She really isn’t holding back there)

“…But, um…”

“Don’t worry about me.”

What’s frightening is that Rico’s expression hasn’t changed, and her eyes aren’t smiling. Nor are Sidy, Mat, or any of the other women. Amidst this pressure, Gon kept his eyes down.

“Linos should go out and relax once in a while.”

“I agree,” Sidy spoke up.

“No… I won’t go. I can’t leave Rico, Mei, Sidy, Soleil, Mat…”

“It’s okay, really.”

“No, I won’t.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“…That’s just like Linos. Then, Gon will guide the others? Gon, thank you for your trouble.”

Finally, a smile appeared on Rico’s face, reflected in the other women’s faces. The tension eased, and Gon looked relieved yet apologetic.

“Your father is a wonderful man,” Rico said, caressing her growing belly.

“Master…” Gon whispered.

“Gon, I’m counting on you.”

As Linos saw the happy faces around him, he sighed and headed to the bath with Rico, Sidy, and Soleil, who suggested they go first. Rico then invited Mat to join them.

“Linos, let’s bathe together. Sidy, Soleil, can you get Eril and Aliria out of the bath?”

“Okay!”

As the women bustled about, Rico turned back to Linos.

“Come on, Linos. Let’s go together.”

Looking at Rico’s genuinely happy face, Linos slowly stood up, glanced at Gon with a resigned look, and said,

“Gon, go over my dead body.”

Whether it was fortunate or not, Linos’s decision would later bring great benefits to him and Agartha, and he would deeply thank Rico. Unaware of this future, he sighed deeply as he headed to the bathhouse.
