Chapter 251: Awakening

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

There’s something strange about Sidy. I had never seen her like this before.

After a rare earthquake in the Heideta Empire, she became unusually sensitive. For example, she could accurately predict how many steps away someone was from entering the mansion, or exactly when it would rain, all based on her senses alone.

Sidy herself was confused and didn’t understand why this was happening, causing concern among her family, including Rico and Mei.

According to Sidy, the best way to describe her feeling was a kind of intuition. However, it seemed like her mind was constantly flooded with information, leading to headaches by evening. Mei suggested that the headaches might continue until her brain adjusts to processing this surge of information.

This condition also led to insomnia. She could sleep, but her mind would soon wake her up. Rico and Mei, worried, had Fairi produce a sleeping powder, which finally helped Sidy sleep.

Sidy’s awakening, while exhausting for her, surprisingly benefited those around her. She started assisting Mei and others in medical research at Agartha’s institute and advised on agricultural and Dwarf technological advancements. Her sharp intuition dramatically improved these projects.

She would often come up with solutions to stalled research or technological developments simply by observing. Even without any rationale, following her suggestions often yielded results beyond expectations. However, the staff at Agartha’s institute were scrambling to find the reasoning behind her methods.

Using her brain excessively, Sidy began to look haggard and developed a craving for sweets, likely due to her brain needing more sugar. She frequently consumed sweets, particularly Japanese-style sweets like manju, a decision I made to prevent her from gaining weight.

Though there’s been no change in her physique yet, her new way of making anko (sweet bean paste) for these sweets resulted in an exceptionally refined taste. As an anko master, this delighted me, but Sidy continued to suffer from headaches.

Unable to watch her in pain, I took her out of the city to a plain, hoping a quieter environment would help her rest.

In the still-cold Agartha, the plain was a silver world of snow. I laid out a large bed on the snow and placed Sidy on it, casting a barrier to maintain a constant temperature and block out sound.

“…How do you feel, Sidy?” I asked.

“…Thank you. It’s very comfortable,” she replied, lying down on the bed.

She looked weary and gazed blankly at the white expanse.

“…There will be more earthquakes. They might continue for about 10 years. Three years from now, on August 14th at exactly 12:00, there will be a massive volcanic eruption on the Dalisan continent,” she muttered, like a prophet.

I gently stroked her head and suggested she sleep. After sprinkling her with Fairi’s sleeping powder, she soon fell asleep, breathing softly. I watched her sleeping face for a while.

After about an hour, she woke up, feeling refreshed. It seemed short, deep sleeps suited her better. Stretching and cracking her neck, she seemed more relaxed.

“Don’t push yourself too hard, Sidy. From now on, take naps in wide, open places like this. Nobody will disturb you here, and you won’t be bombarded with information. I’ll set up a transfer barrier for you to rest here,” I advised.

“Thank you, Linos-sama… I…” she hesitated.

“What’s wrong, Sidy?”

“I’m scared of myself. I feel like something is wrong.”

“Is this common in Dwarves?”

“No. I’ve never heard of it. Mei-chan, who also has Dwarf blood, said she’s never experienced this.”

“Then we should have Mei or Roni check it out.”

“I might die…”

“Don’t say such foolish things!”

“But… I…”

As if she could no longer hold back what she had been enduring, Sidy began to shed tears. I reassured her that everything would be okay and gently embraced her. It must be tough for her, suddenly having an explosion of information in her mind. I could somewhat understand Sidy’s feelings.

“Linos-sama… I… I want to be by your side forever… I love you…”

“Sidy…”

I continued to gently stroke her back for a while.

As evening approached, Sidy regained her composure. Just as we were about to return to the imperial mansion, I sensed something. Illymo seemed to notice it too and looked in the direction of the disturbance. I recognized this presence.

“…What is he doing here?”

From the far end of the plains, a group of riders slowly approached us. Sidy and I mounted Illymo and rode towards them.

“Ah, is it you?”

“What are you doing here?”

Approaching elegantly through the snowfield was King Maintia and his party.

“I heard there’s an ancient sword in the village of Kanashiri. I wanted to see it for myself.”

“You always seem to enjoy looking at famous sights and treasures.”

“Well, it’s fun, isn’t it?”

The king spoke in his usual relaxed manner, while Sidy watched him intently.

“Ah, is this your first time meeting him, Sidy? This is King Maintia of Vladime. And this is one of his wives, Considy.”

“Ah, a well-featured lady. Still young… Ah, a Dwarf, I see. Pardon my manners on horseback. I am Vladime Roscano Maintia. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

From atop his horse, he gracefully bowed to Sidy. Despite being a bit of a fool, he executed such formalities impeccably. He’s indeed a curious person.

I expected Sidy to return the greeting, but instead, she just stared intensely at King Maintia.

“Sidy, what’s wrong?”

“…”

“Sidy?”

“My lady, is there something on my face?”

King Maintia looked puzzled as Sidy’s eyes moved rapidly up, down, left, and right, fixating on him without a blink. Slowly, her right hand reached into her bosom. When it reemerged, it was clutching a mithril dagger, her usual self-defense weapon.

“Sidy, what are you…”

“Yaaaah!”

Before I knew it, she lunged at King Maintia with the dagger.

“Whoa!”

Caught off guard by her unexpected action, the king fell off his horse, landing on his back. Sidy quickly mounted him.

“Traitor!”

With a scream, she plunged the dagger into King Maintia.
