Chapter 253: The Seal

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

“Cough, cough, cough!”

As if to drown out my shouts, Rico is coughing violently.

“Rico! Rico!”

“Heave, heave, heave!”

Rico is facing away from me, her shoulders heaving up and down intensely. I instinctively start to rub her back. At that moment, I hear a voice I don’t recognize.

“…San. I will not forgive those who interfere… Suffer… Struggle…”

“Who the hell are you?! Come out! I’ll kill you!”

“Master!”

In a rage, I lose myself and shout loudly, and at the same time, I’m embraced from behind. Turning around, I see Mei’s face. The moment I see her face, I unconsciously open my mouth.

“Rico! Rico is…!”

“Please calm down! Master, please calm down!”

Mei doesn’t let go of me. I try to say that I’m fine and that we should look after Rico, but by then, Matokal is already by Rico’s side. She looks at me, nods once, then gently carries Rico out of the room.

“Rico, Rico, Rico!”

“Master, it’s okay. Everything will be alright.”

I cry for a while on the bed, and Mei continues to hold me the entire time.

After calming down, I, still holding Mei’s hand, carefully look around the bedroom. I enhance my perception to the maximum, not just in this room but across the entire estate, yet I find nothing suspicious.

This is strange. I thought I had accidentally scratched myself while sleeping the last time I got hurt, but it seems that was not the case. I definitely heard a voice. Someone has entered the estate. But there’s a barrier around the estate that should block anyone with hostile intentions towards my family. Could it be that someone broke through my barrier? And if so, how did they do it? I frantically try to make sense of it all in my confused mind.

“Master.”

Mei’s voice brings me back to reality.

“Let’s go to Lady Rico.”

Comforted by Mei’s calm and gentle tone, I could only nod.

Led by Mei, I head to Matokal’s room. Opening the door, I see Rico lying in bed, with Matokal holding Eril close by.

“She was in distress until a moment ago, but now she’s calmly sleeping.”

Hearing this, Mei checks Rico’s pulse and breathing, among other things. Eril remains still in Matokal’s arms, seemingly asleep. Mei nods slowly, and Matokal, careful not to wake Eril, speaks softly.

“I’d like to lay Eril next to her…”

Mei nods again. Matokal lifts the edge of the blanket slightly and places Eril in the gap. The moment she’s in bed, Eril turns over and snuggles up to Rico.

While stroking Eril’s head, I speak to Mei.

“Mei… How is Rico?”

“Her breathing and pulse are stable. Her complexion is good, and I see no particular issues. What happened to make her scream like that?”

“…I had a dream. When I was holding Aliria, she turned into a monster… She tried to bite me, so I instinctively strangled her with my right hand. Then, when I realized it, I was strangling Rico…”

“…”

Mei and Matokal don’t know how to respond. Seeing their expressions, I continue.

“And when I was desperately shouting Rico’s name, I heard a voice. It said it wouldn’t forgive, to suffer… That’s right, the day before as well…”

“Oh, it’s been a while.”

“Sh… Shinryu-sama?” (T/N: Dragon god)

Suddenly, a pure white child appears in the room. Why is Shinryu-sama here? Everyone looks puzzled.

“Ah… Sidy told me to call you.”

Soleil stands by the door, looking apologetic.

“Why would Sidy tell Soleil to summon Shinryu-sama?”

“I don’t know. There was a loud noise, and when I tried to leave my room, Sidy was there. She immediately told me to summon Shinryu-sama.”

“What’s that about? And where did Sidy go?”

“I don’t know. She went downstairs and… ah!”

Soleil jumps into the room, followed by Sidy, who has a ghost-like aura.

“Sidy…?”

Upon closer inspection, Sidy is holding a sheathed dagger in her left hand, likely her usual self-defense weapon, and a small jar in her right hand.

“Sidy… What are you holding? That jar?”

“It’s Garaiya powder.”

“Garaiya?”

“Master, it’s a mixture of dust from ground orichalcum and dust from ground mithril,” Mei explains softly. Watching us with a blank expression, Sidy speaks in a monotone voice.

“…Shinryu-sama is also here. Thank you, Soleil. Now, Shinryu-sama, Lord Linos, please lend me your strength.”

Saying this, Sidy starts walking slowly down the corridor.

We hurriedly follow her. Sidy walks into my bedroom.

Upon entering, Sidy stares intently at the wall. Then, in the same monotone voice, she addresses us.

“Shinryu-sama, please come here.”

“Oh, okay.”

“Lord Linos, over here.”

Following her instructions, we move into position, with Shinryu-sama and I flanking Sidy on either side.

“Oh, what’s this?” Shinryu-sama tilts his head, curious. I can’t see anything, but like Sidy, Shinryu-sama is intently staring at the wall.

“Could you make it visible for us, please?”

“Hmm? Oh, is this a lingering spirit? Well then, let’s see.”

Shinryu-sama lifts his chin slightly, and then, something that looks like a stain begins to float up in front of the wall.

“Lord Linos, please put a barrier around this stain. Make it a strong one that doesn’t even let air through.”

“Okay, got it.”

As instructed by Sidy, I create a powerful barrier against the wall, one that doesn’t even allow air particles through. Watching this, Sidy, with the short sword tucked under her arm, takes out silver powder from the jar in her right hand and sprinkles it over the stain while chanting what seems to be a spell.

“Wow! What’s this!”

I can’t help but exclaim. Within the barrier, the figure of a middle-aged man with a square face and a jutting chin appears. The powder Sidy had sprinkled earlier now floats around him like clouds.

“Who are you…?”

The man inside the barrier stands still with his eyes closed.

“Hmm, it’s a pity. He was almost there.”

Shinryu-sama speaks in a relaxed tone.

“Shinryu-sama, what do you mean by ‘it’s a pity’?”

“This being is one step away from becoming a spirit.”

According to Shinryu-sama, when someone with high-level skills dies, their body perishes, but their magic and thoughts can remain in this world. Such beings are called lingering spirits.

“It’s a pity. If he had a benevolent heart, he could have ascended to a spirit. But this one is filled with hatred, pure hatred. That’s why he couldn’t become a spirit. However, it’s rare. Evil lingering spirits usually perish quickly. Hm? And this one is?”

Shinryu-sama examines the man trapped within the barrier closely.

“Yes, he can manipulate thoughts.”

Sidy is the one who speaks.

“It’s a rare case. An evil lingering spirit, but his sheer hatred has allowed him to remain in this world. Moreover, he’s half-transformed into a spirit, capable of directing his thoughts to manipulate people. He’s quite a troublesome opponent.”

Sidy speaks calmly, while Shinryu-sama looks on, nodding in satisfaction.

“I’ve never seen such a thing before. It’s quite rare.”

“Sidy?”

“Lord Linos, this lingering spirit doesn’t react to magical detection or presence detection. Also, your barrier can’t prevent his existence. Essentially, he’s a mass of thoughts without a physical form.”

“So, what do we do? Just leave him…?”

“We’ll seal him.”

“What?”

Sidy draws her short sword, aims it at the lingering spirit, and begins chanting a spell.

“Curse… you… I will… not forgive…”

The man, who had his eyes closed, suddenly opens them wide and starts to resist. However, his figure gradually fades away. Looking closely, Sidy’s short sword is glowing purple. She sprinkles more powder from the jar onto its blade.

“Shinryu-sama, may we have your assistance?”

“Oh, sealing him, are we?”

As Shinryu-sama gazes at the purple sword, it quickly turns into a bright white light. Sidy slowly turns the blade towards me.

“Lord Linos, please put the strong barrier you used earlier onto this blade.”

“Alright.”

I cast the barrier as instructed, and the sword, which was glowing brightly, loses its light. Seeing this, Sidy slowly sheathes the sword.

“Thank you. We’ve successfully sealed him in this short sword.”

“What does that mean, Sidy?”

“This short sword has been blessed by the Deer God. With the power of Shinryu-sama, your strength, Lord Linos, and my own, albeit modest, we’ve sealed the lingering spirit. The more he tries to exert his power, the stronger the barrier becomes, preventing him from manipulating people with his thoughts anymore.”

“Who was he, exactly?”

“It seems he was related to King Maintia.”

“King Maintia?”

“Yes. Originally, this lingering spirit was attached to King Maintia. He emitted such an evil aura and murderous intent that I tried to exorcise him, but he was too powerful, and I failed. But now, it’s okay.”

“Why was he with that fool of a king? Could it be… the spirit of a miscarried child or something?”

“No, it’s not something so simple. This is something much… much…”

“Sidy, what’s wrong?”

“So much hatred… Ughhhhhhh…”

Sidy vomits again, splattering the floor of the bedroom.
