Chapter 255: Consoling the Spirit

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Sigh…

Just after leaving King Maintia’s room, I found myself letting out a sigh. Sidy looked at me with a worried expression on her face. As she expressed her concern, asking if I was okay, I gestured for her to give me a moment and began to speak while we slowly walked down the hallway.

“Actually, when I used my appraisal skill on the Grand King, I saw something. A scene where he was ordering the killing of his brother.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“Well, the two were arguing about matters of the state. And the brother said he wouldn’t follow the Grand King’s orders. The Grand King was deeply troubled, but in the end, he decided to kill his brother for the sake of the country.”

“How terrible… To think that brothers…”

“No, kings often have their dark sides, more or less. That Grand King actually has less of such a dark side. Rather, it was a situation where the country couldn’t have survived otherwise. However, once that old man makes a decision, he acts on it immediately. Without having a heart-to-heart talk with his brother, he just went ahead and killed him.”

“If that’s the case, I can understand why that spirit was haunting King Maintia. Probably, it intended to corrupt the king and ultimately destroy the country of Vladime.”

“I see. However, appeasing that spirit’s hatred seems quite difficult, doesn’t it?”

“Yes. But King Maintia seemed very confident, so maybe this time we should leave it to him…”

Sidy began to press and rub her temples with both hands, seemingly in pain whenever she concentrated on a thought.

“Sidy, are you okay?”

“Yes… I think it will subside soon. Um… Linos-sama?”

“What is it?”

“I’m thinking of returning to the Niza Republic, if you permit.”

“What’s the matter?”

“I wish to consult with the Deer God.”

“The Deer God?”

“Yes. About this headache and nausea. I’ve been mostly healthy thanks to the Deer God’s blessings, but this time it feels quite serious. I’d like to consult with the Deer God once…”

“That’s a good idea. I’ll discuss it with Mei and Roni, and we should visit the Deer God soon. I’ll come with you.”

“That’s… I’m sorry to trouble you.”

“No, it’s fine. You’re a hard worker, Sidy, and you don’t complain about your hardships. If there’s anything I can do, just let me know. You’re an important part of our family. Let’s seek the Deer God’s wisdom and get you back to health. Maybe we should also consult with your grandmother.”

“Uuu… Linos-sama…”

“Don’t cry, Sidy. Let’s head back and have some food.”

With that, we returned to the mansion.

The next evening, while I was working in the Agartha office, an unexpected visitor arrived.

“Sorry to interrupt your work.”

“King Maintia!? What brings you here all of a sudden?”

“Well, I’ve prepared an item to console my uncle’s soul. Could you take me to the place where he’s sealed?”

“Now?”

“Wouldn’t it be better to do it sooner?”

I was puzzled, and Patterson, who was standing behind, opened his mouth apologetically.

“I’m afraid so… Our king has been working tirelessly since last night… We thought it would be best to soothe Lord Cabaret’s soul as soon as possible…”

“Since last night, without rest? Then wouldn’t it be better to take a break and perhaps do this tomorrow morning?”

“Well… it’s just that…”

Patterson looked uncomfortable, avoiding my gaze. Right after, King Maintia’s relaxed tone reached my ears.

“Actually, tomorrow, a new lady will be arriving from the homeland to replace Noreen.”

“What? You mean…?”

I was surprised, my eyes wide open. I hadn’t expected him to say he wanted to settle this issue before the arrival of a woman tomorrow. It sounded quite selfish.

As I was contemplating this, King Maintia, still wearing his gentle smile, approached me and spoke in a low voice.

“Let’s just leave it at that. Patterson seems to have been sworn to secrecy by his father and can’t say much. However, he insists that we must soothe my uncle’s soul as soon as possible. Can you understand his position?”

The king’s expression was the same as always, but there was something slightly different about his aura. Could it be that he’s breaking free from the spirit’s control and showing his true nature? Maybe he’s more capable than I thought. With this intuition, I decided to leave the consoling task to the king.

“Understood. Please wait a moment. Let’s not do it here; go back to your room and wait.”

“Got it. I’m always causing you trouble.”

King Maintia, with a smile still on his face, left the room with Patterson and the others.

I immediately teleported to the mansion and headed to Sidy’s room. She was lying in bed, talking with Mei and Roni. I hesitated to enter, but Sidy encouraged me with a “it’s okay,” and I told them what had happened.

“Sidy, I’m sorry to ask, but could you transport the dagger sealing the spirit to Agartha? King Maintia has created something to soothe it, and he wants to try it.”

“Understood. Mei-chan, Roni-san, I’ll tell you more about it later.”

Saying this, Sidy got out of bed and left the room. She headed to the mansion’s reception room, where the dagger was kept. Normally, this room wasn’t used unless there were visitors, making it a perfect place to store dangerous items. Moreover, its location away from our living quarters was another reason for choosing this room.

I had placed a barrier around the room as an extra precaution. After deactivating it, we entered. The dagger sealing the spirit was carelessly placed in the middle of a table. Without hesitation, Sidy picked it up and put it in her pocket. Once I confirmed this, we teleported to Agartha’s guesthouse.

“Wow! That was quick!”

As we entered the room, King Maintia approached us with a happy expression.

“Which one is the dagger sealing my uncle?”

“Here it is.”

Sidy took the dagger out of her pocket and handed it to the king. He examined it closely, then turned his gaze back to us and spoke.

“May I open it?”

Sidy nodded. He slowly drew the dagger from its sheath.

“It looks like an ordinary dagger… But if the King and Queen of Agartha say so, there must be no mistake. Alright.”

He placed the drawn dagger on the table and walked to the back of the room. After a while, he returned, holding a large picture frame as tall as himself.

“This is my masterpiece. I think it’s the best I’ve ever done.”

He rotated the frame to show us…

…a magnificent portrait that seemed almost ready to come to life. It depicted an elegant lady with a gentle smile looking straight at us, and next to her, a wise-looking young boy. Likely, these were Cabaret’s wife and child.

Lost in the beauty of the painting, I noticed the dagger on the table trembling slightly. I was about to cast a barrier when Sidy grabbed my right hand, stopping me.

“Sidy.”

“Linos-sama, look.”

Following Sidy’s gaze, I saw the square-faced man we had sealed appearing before us. Around him, the powder Sidy had used during the sealing floated in a spiral, wrapping around him as if keeping the spirit contained.

“…Tea… Meetia… Gregon. Meetia, Meetia…”

“Linos-sama… Can you use your appraisal skill on this spirit?”

Snapping back to reality, I activated my appraisal skill on him. Usually, the images would come to mind smoothly, but this time, only fragmented images appeared. Focusing my consciousness and infusing more magical power, I wrapped the spirit in magic and activated the appraisal skill again. Finally, I could see the man’s past.

…It was a very sad past.
