Chapter 256: The True Nature of the Monster

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

Vladime Roscano Cabaret. The younger brother of the great King Reborn, a man in whom the king placed his utmost trust. Despite their contrasting personalities and preferences, these two brothers complemented each other’s deficiencies, together building the current prosperity of the Vladime nation.

Their youth was a series of hardships. Born as the first and second sons of the king, they were raised under the same roof due to being full siblings. While the elder brother was serious and studious from a young age, the younger brother loved glamorous things and was fond of the arts.

Their lives changed drastically soon after their father’s death.

Normally, Reborn, the eldest, would have been expected to ascend to the throne. However, it was their younger brother, the third son, who ended up becoming king. Their mother was a concubine of low status, whereas the third son’s mother was the king’s principal wife, coming from a noble family. Moreover, being a devout follower of the Crimeana faith, the third son received full support from his maternal family and the church, leading to his ascension as king at just three years old. The new king’s advisors shunned the brothers, banishing them to a remote part of the Vladime nation when Reborn was 14 and Cabaret was 12.

The land they were exiled to was miserable. The soil was barren, yielding few crops, and was frequently ravaged by monsters. In addition, diseases were rampant, leaving the inhabitants with little hope for survival.

Despite these challenges, Reborn, with his diligence and perseverance, began to study the land and desperately sought out crops suited to the soil. At the same time, he, along with local adventurers, knights, and of course, Cabaret himself, fought against the invading monsters, gradually expanding their territory.

Cabaret, leveraging his artistic talent, continued to soothe the people with his paintings, songs, and music. His exceptional skill in kemari, inherited from their father, especially stood out, moving those who witnessed his acrobatic ball handling.

After 10 years of struggling with poverty, monsters, and diseases—a plight that Reborn himself suffered from—the situation within their domain began to stabilize, just as the young king died at the age of 13 without an heir. After various complications, Reborn’s management skills in the remote territory were recognized, leading to his nomination as the successor.

However, even after Reborn’s ascension, the brothers’ position remained precarious amidst the strong influence of the previous king’s advisors and the Crimeana church. A coup by a faction of their servants seemed imminent… It appeared the brothers’ fate was sealed.

Yet, it was Cabaret who overcame this national crisis. Unlike his younger brother, Cabaret was naturally large and had grown to over 180 cm by adulthood. He used his formidable physique to wreak havoc on the battlefield.

Even in times of peace, Cabaret’s presence alone was enough to deter the bold from picking fights, as they would rather hide or flee back to their homes. On the battlefield, his ferocious charge with a spear caused enemies to flee in terror, allowing him to claim many heads and return triumphantly. His efforts played a crucial role in pacifying the Vladime nation.

King Reborn, with his knowledge and culture, developed a unique ideology based on his experiences. It resembled Confucianism, emphasizing compassion, proper conduct without concern for loss or gain, and the importance of education and sincerity.

However, this strict ideology was suffocating for many, and it was Cabaret who balanced it out. He used his position as the royal brother to entertain and comfort the people during national crises. Known for his virtue, generosity, and popularity, Cabaret played a crucial role in restraining his brother’s potential for tyranny. The intelligent and decisive Reborn, together with the virtuous and charismatic Cabaret, led Vladime to unparalleled prosperity.

But this harmonious relationship came to an abrupt end.

A prolonged rain caused a devastating flood, destroying crops and leading to famine. The former king’s advisors objected to distributing food to the peasants, considering them no better than cattle. But ignoring them meant the death of many and the fall of the nation. Reborn decided to act decisively against those who exploited or neglected their duties, using spies to identify and, if necessary, execute them. Their confiscated wealth was used to buy food from other countries.

Cabaret too was summoned to the castle but defended his actions before King Reborn, arguing the importance of art and entertainment for the people’s spirits during hard times. Despite their differences, Cabaret believed he understood his brother. However, he failed to see the change in Reborn, who had begun a ruthless purge without remorse.

Leaving the castle, Cabaret went to the city of Orbize to distribute aid and comfort the suffering people with music, unaware of the severity of his brother’s resolve.

The realization of danger came at dawn, as Cabaret, leaving his sleeping wife Mitea behind, took up his sword to investigate unsettling noises in the garden.

Suddenly looking up, he saw a red rain falling from the pre-dawn sky. What Cabaret perceived as rain was in fact arrows cloaked in flame, which pierced the roof and walls of the mansion, quickly turning it into a sea of fire. He immediately attempted to protect his family by heading towards the mansion. However, as if waiting for that moment, a multitude of arrows struck his back. Soon after, soldiers equipped in armor stormed the mansion, and despite his valiant efforts, Cabaret was pierced by the soldiers’ spears, scattering his life in the process.

When he regained consciousness, he was flying in the sky, floating in the air as if drifting. While marveling at this strange sensation, he remembered what had happened. Wasn’t he killed by a soldier’s spear? That’s right, the flames… As he thought this, his eyes caught sight of the charred remains of his mansion.

“Mitea! Gregorn!” he screamed desperately for his beloved wife and son. But there was no reply. Then, in front of him, he saw the charred bodies of humans. Upon closer inspection, it was the forms of his wife and child, who had died embracing each other.

“Captain! We have found the lady and Lord Gregorn!” he heard someone say. Immediately, the bodies of his wife and child were surrounded by soldiers.

“Indeed, it’s the lady and Lord Gregorn. Alright, completely dispose of these bodies!” The soldiers carried the two bodies outside, piled up firewood, and burned their bodies. Cabaret witnessed it all. And when everything was over and his beloved family had turned completely to ash, he harbored an intense hatred.

“Mitea… Gregorn… How could this… How could this… Ah… Brother!!!! I will not forgive, I will not forgive you!!!!” It was clear that the soldiers who attacked him were indeed the guards of King Reborn, and it was unmistakably his brother who had ordered the attack. With regret, he cursed his brother with intense hatred.

Someone was watching Cabaret’s plight: it was Pope, an air spirit.

She could strengthen herself by absorbing the souls of the dead. To her, a soul with strong emotions was an asset to enhance her power, so she attempted to absorb Cabaret’s soul without hesitation.

But that was a miscalculation.

Even reduced to a soul, Cabaret’s emotional energy far surpassed Pope’s power. In the end, Pope was overtaken by his will, and he was reborn as a spirit in this world. However, since he did not completely assimilate Pope’s body, he remained as a thought spirit, unable to fully take on the form of an air spirit. Yet, having acquired the abilities of an air spirit, he could freely change his form, travel on the wind, and manipulate others with his emotional energy.

The first destination of his new form was Alison Castle. He pondered how he could make his brother, the king, suffer the most. His thoughts turned to his nephew, Maintia, the prince whom the king had high hopes for. By corrupting Maintia, the king would suffer, and the nation would fall. “Let this country perish,” he thought as he headed to Alison Castle. Entering Prince Maintia’s body through the air, he began to manipulate him.

“…And that’s the story of Cabaret up to now,” I slowly exhaled, recounting the past of the thought spirit I had seen through my appraisal skill. King Maintia listened without changing his expression, while Patterson and the others listened with downturned faces, biting their lips.

“Did you know? …It seems so,” King Maintia said, turning his gaze to Patterson and the others behind him. Then, he closed his eyes again, tilting his head back as if lost in thought.

“We shouldn’t blame my father, the great king,” he murmured with his eyes still closed. Patterson and the others’ gazes slowly turned to King Maintia. Opening his eyes again, he made a face as if he had swallowed a bitter bug and spoke.

“The king, the nobility, and the commoners are the same as humans. We must cherish them… That was my father’s favorite saying. To embody that, my father conducted such a harsh reign of terror. He executed many people and saved tens of thousands from starvation with his policies. Unlike my uncle, my father was always realistic. No, he had to be realistic. He wasn’t born in a fortunate era like me,” he said, smiling lightly. Then, looking at Patterson and the others, and then at me and Sidy, he continued with a gentle expression.

“However, I dislike my father’s methods. I shall not become like him. Rather, it was good that my uncle possessed me. Surely, the enjoyment I find in art and food must be due to my uncle’s influence. Yes, that’s fine. It was good that way. Thanks to him, I was able to make the acquaintance of King Agartha. Not only that, but I also formed connections with Lord Layfence and even King Poseidon. All of this was possible because my uncle came to dwell within me,” King Maintia said with a chuckle. Then, slowly lifting his face to look directly at me, he began to speak slowly.

“King of Agartha, there might be unforgivable feelings regarding my uncle, Duke Cabaret, but could you leave the matter of my uncle to me? As the King of Vladime, I will take responsibility for handling it… That is all.”

He bowed briskly to me. The usual carefree fool was nowhere to be seen. Instead, there stood a dignified, genuine king of a nation…
