Chapter 259: After All, Won’t It Be Cured Unless He Dies?

Leave a Comment / Reincarnation into a barrier master / By IX

After receiving the blessing of the Deer God on the holy sword created by Sidy’s brother, Galto, we returned to our mansion in the imperial capital. Soon after, I received a message from the Agartha guest house that Patterson was requesting my presence there.

I immediately teleported to the guesthouse, with Sidy insisting on coming along despite my suggestion she rest in our room. She seemed concerned about the sealed spirit of Cabaret.

“Ah, King of Agartha, and even Queen Considy… I apologize for the inconvenience during your busy schedules,” Patterson bowed repeatedly, almost to the point where I wondered if he might hurt his back. Perhaps he already had.

As I pondered this, Patterson led me to a window, gesturing me to look outside while suggesting Sidy refrain from joining. Peering out, I saw a mirror hanging from a tree branch, reflecting an image of a man who resembled King Maintia, apparently naked and performing an obscene dance against a wall. This was something I definitely could not let Sidy see.

“What sort of play is that?” I asked.

“It’s been like this for about five days,” Patterson explained.

“Has he been naked for five days?”

“Yes… that’s right.”

According to Patterson, ever since the day the dagger containing Cabaret’s spirit was entrusted to him, the king had locked himself in his room, refusing to let anyone in. Occasionally, from within, sounds of sighing or moaning could be heard, through which Patterson and his colleagues verified the king’s survival.

For the first five days, the king would leave his room only for meals, but thereafter, he stopped coming out altogether. Despite knocking, there was no response, and the door would only partially open, enough to slip in food and water.

Two days into this situation, with uncertainty about whether the king was eating the food provided, Patterson and his team climbed a tree next to the king’s window to check on him, setting up a mirror on a branch to view inside from a neighboring room.

Though they couldn’t always see the king, glimpses of him through the mirror suggested he occasionally ate the provided food by hand, reducing fears of starvation. However, as the days passed, their worry peaked, leading them to seek my help.

“But what do you expect me to do? It looks like he’s in the middle of a perverted play,” I remarked.

“Please don’t say such things. We’re really worried about our king… that he might have gone mad,” Patterson said, tears streaming down his face.

Sighing, I tried to comfort him, acknowledging that anyone would think the king had lost his mind under such circumstances.

“Is that so… It’s been over 10 days. Including the time before this, it’s almost three weeks now… Ah, if only we had brought him earlier…”

“Brought him earlier? What do you mean?”

Surprised by my question, Patterson explained, “Ever since it was discovered that Noreen was pregnant… For nearly three weeks, our king has not lain with a woman. A king who is not satisfied unless he has women in the morning, afternoon, and night, has been without for almost a month. This is unprecedented. It’s clear to anyone that the king couldn’t endure such a situation. Oh, what have I done… If only I had found a woman to present to the king…”

“Disgusting,” Sidy remarked, looking at Patterson as if he were something vile. I gave a wry smile at the scene before Sidy turned her gaze towards me.

“So, the goal is to get King Maintia out of his room, right?”

At Sidy’s words, I glanced at Patterson, who nodded vigorously with a surprised expression. Sidy, looking somewhat annoyed, searched the room and, after discussing something with Noreen, brought out a large white cloth. She spread it out and began writing something on it.

“Beautiful!”

“How beautiful!”

“It’s so beautiful! It looks like a painting!”

“Ah, it’s a pity it will disappear – such beauty going to waste.”

“Tch. …But it’s beautiful, indeed! Truly moving.”

…It seems Sidy wasn’t fond of my attempt at dialogue delivery. She clicked her tongue and glared at me… scary.

But I did my best, trying to mimic the delivery of the 15th generation Kabuki actor, Ichikawa Uzaemon. What? You don’t know the 15th generation Uzaemon? …Well, that’s fine. But, if you’re interested, you might want to look him up. He’s incredibly handsome. Anyway, we read out the lines Sidy wrote on the white cloth with earnest acting.

“King Maintia likes beautiful things, doesn’t he? I’m worried about Linos’s monotonous delivery, but I think this will lure him out.”

“What are you talking about? I deliberately chose that style of dialogue delivery. …But, he’s not a fish. Will he really come out for that?”

As we were discussing, a loud bang came from the door of King Maintia’s room, followed by the sound of scratching. After a moment of silence, the door slowly opened.

“What beautiful thing might that be?”

King Maintia appeared with sparkling eyes, his naked body and a beard growing around his chin like moss… He had the appearance of a complete pervert, causing discomfort to all who saw him. Moreover, he hadn’t bathed in several days, emitting a terrible stench from both his room and himself.

“Ugh.”

Unable to bear the smell, Sidy covered her mouth and rushed out of the room like a scared rabbit. Given her heightened senses during this period, the odor must have been unbearable for her.

“…What in the world are you doing?”

“Ah, King of Agartha, is that you? I was trying to calm my uncle’s spirit. Maybe I overdid it a bit?”

King Maintia spoke with his usual cheerful smile. Unable to stand the smell, I immediately cast a spell to remove the odor from myself. Patterson and the others grimaced, but Noreen’s expression didn’t seem to change, either she was maintaining a poker face or genuinely unaffected.

“First, let’s get you into a bath. Hey, Patterson.”

At my prompting, he immediately took the king to the bathroom. The remaining servants entered the king’s room, making retching noises as they began to clean. Meanwhile, I returned to our mansion in the capital and headed to Soleil’s room.

“Oh, it’s rare for you to visit during the daytime… But I’m happy.”

“Ah, no, that’s not it. You don’t have to undress… I was wondering if I could borrow some of your perfume.”

“Perfume?”

“Yes, preferably something with a strong scent.”

“In that case… I recommend this Carisariki scent.”

“Thank you, I’ll borrow that.”

Saying that, I teleported back to King Maintia’s room. Upon entering, I saw the king, now dressed in a bathrobe after his bath, lounging comfortably on the sofa. Ignoring him, I immediately spread the perfume I had borrowed from Soleil throughout the room he had secluded himself in, then sat down in front of him. I tried to dispel the barrier I had set up to check if the smell had dissipated, but the odor was still present. Without a word, I also sprayed him with the perfume.

“I apologize for the trouble.”

“What exactly were you doing? Dancing naked, it looked like you were offering prayers to some lecherous deity.”

“Ha-ha! No way. I was creating something to comfort my uncle’s spirit. I used a paintbrush, so I got dirty. That’s why I was naked.”

“And the hip thrusting?”

“You saw that too? That was to wake myself up. Despite my desire to paint, sometimes sleepiness would overpower me. Shaking my whole body was how I fought off the drowsiness.”

“You should’ve just slept.”

“That wasn’t an option.”

Suddenly, he became serious and spoke in a low voice.

“My uncle’s hatred is substantial… Patterson told me everything. Pacifying it isn’t a simple matter. My uncle’s spirit must be continuously soothed in our nation of Vladime for eternity. To do that, we must show him our resolve. Being idle won’t convey our intentions to my uncle. That’s why I created a testament to soothing my uncle’s spirit, without rest or sleep.”

Then, one of the servants reported that the king’s room had been tidied. He nodded grandly and turned to me.

“The testament is almost complete. I’ll show it to you.”

Saying so, he strode into the room. Reluctantly, I followed him.

Even with Soleil’s perfume, a slight odor remained in the room. Probably… it was because he really hadn’t left the room for several weeks. As I thought this, I noticed a large white board placed on the floor right in front of the door. It seemed this huge board had been propped against the door, preventing it from opening. King Maintia had the servants lift the board and lean it against the wall.

…On it was an incredibly realistic painting of people who seemed about to move.

A large man, presumably Cabaret, was next to a beautiful woman, likely his wife, and between them, a boy with a wise-looking face. The three of them were holding hands, clearly a family connected by deep love.

“In our nation, my uncle’s family has been erased from memory. I believe we shouldn’t bury my uncle and his family in oblivion. We, the royal family, must continue to soothe their spirits for generations. My uncle feared his and his family’s erasure the most. To comfort his spirit, we must not forget him or his family. We will honor my uncle in our nation for eternity. …Rest assured, uncle.” (T/N: No typo mistake, it kinda does repeat)

He smiled gently and looked at the dagger containing Cabaret’s spirit. Somehow, it felt like the atmosphere around the dagger had changed.

“I’ll take this with me when I return home. It’s designed to be easily transported in pieces, so Patterson and the others can rest easy.”

With that, he nodded in satisfaction.

“Excuse me.”

A slightly plump, short woman suddenly entered the room.

“I beg your pardon. I’ve come to inquire about Lady Noreen’s condition.”

“Ah, please come in.”

Patterson invited her into the room. Shortly after, she quietly explained to me that she had been appointed as Noreen’s physician recently.

“Please take good care of Lady Noreen.”

“Wait, Patterson!”

King Maintia suddenly raised his voice. I stared at him, wondering what was happening.

“Your name… what is it?”

“Uh? Oh, yes. It’s my first time meeting you. I am Canal, Lady Noreen’s attending physician.”

“Canal… How old are you?”

“Yes, I am 28 years old.”

King Maintia slowly approached Canal, examining her face closely.

“Um…”

“Beautiful! Come with me!”

“Uh? What? Eh?”

King Maintia suddenly grabbed Canal’s arm and dragged her at an incredible speed to the next room, followed by a flustered Patterson.

“He’s really a fool, isn’t he…”

Muttering to myself, I was left speechless, unable to move from the spot for a while.
