Chapter 89 Panic and Promise

“Where are the two red light balls now?” Jiang Shaoliu wondered nervously.

He had no idea where the two giants went when the Monkey King defeated them, and it would be simply impossible for an ordinary master to deal with them if others like them appeared again.

There would be nothing to stop them from ravaging the city.

“Let’s stop the broadcast. People are discussing what they saw on the mountain and there aren’t that many people watching you fighting the monsters.” Ruo Feng gnashed his teeth and said, “Shaoliu, I’ve earned tons of money over the years through my streams; now I can offer them as a shareholder since the Yungang League is short on funds.”

Jiang Shaoliu bashfully replied, “I really appreciate your help. You’ve already done so much… How much do you have now?”

“Not much,” Ruo Feng shrugged, “two hundred million.”

200 million?

Jiang Shaoliu reeled in astonishment. Were all livestream hosts so rich?

“Those are my hard-earned life savings. Don’t let them go to waste.” Ruo Feng seemed a little melancholy as he transferred the funds through his smartwatch. “Be as generous as me when it’s time to pay out bonuses.”

Jiang Shaoliu checked his account balance. 200 million… His felt his head spin.

“I’ll never forget this.” Jiang Shaoliu put a hand over his heart and swore to the mountain in the sky: “I will always remember Ruo Feng once I’m rich, or else, I shall be struck down by lightning and split in half!”

The online message boards were awash with rumors and theories about what had happened in the sky, and what could come next.

Some felt pessimistic and thought there might be more monsters coming to destroy the whole world, citing their favorite doomsday theories and prophecies, but there were also those who were more reasonable, who asked people not to be fearful and just wait and see what would happen, hoping the major factions of the region would solve this problem for them.

Some news finally came in two days later.

It was about only 70 kilometers between Yungang City and Haidong City to the west before the Great Changes, but now the distance was around 2,000 kilometers.

The two red balls had dropped in the Danger Zone outside Haidong City, and three monsters entered the city center and took a heavenly fruit which had powerful medicinal effects.

Jiang Shaoliu and Ruo Feng watched the live footage together with trepidation. Three humanoid monsters were on screen, about three or four stories tall and gleaming gold, rampaging through the city streets, tearing apart buildings like they were piles of twigs. After slaughtering a great number of human masters, they walked out of the camera’s view.

Those three monsters seemed even stronger than Oxhead and Horseface. They killed any enemies they met with ease and seemed completely impervious to any projectile weapons fired at them, including grenade and armor-piercing rockets.

“Those monsters don’t use any weapons, they only fight with their fists… and tongues,” Jiang Shaoliu remarked.

One of the monsters shook his head and a flat golden tongue rolled out, pressing against a silver master’s chest.

“They are just like the Messengers of Death who live in Hell, like in the myth!” Ruo Feng cried. “Those tongues are even sharper than alloy weapons; they’re chopping those masters like tofu!”

Jiang Shaoliu nodded gravely.

Those three monsters were as tall as the two giants from before, but they were much faster and fiercer, and they used their serrated tongues as their main weapons.

A great panic gripped the nation following the appearance of the video.

Someone from Yungang City reposted the footage from Liang Duan Mountain on the internet and people began studiously comparing the two events.

Someone posted, “Have you seen that there are gold-level monsters, but there’re no human golden masters?”

“That’s really a problem,” someone commented. “It’s destiny. The golden monsters and beasts will destroy humanity.”

As panic rose throughout the nation, many began believing the doomsday theories and many even committed suicide. Some went mad, and began raving in the streets. Some showed the dark side of human nature and turned to crime and looting.

Finally, the military began to respond with notices to the effect of: “There aren’t only gold-level monsters and they are not only from the sky. We have golden masters too and they are much stronger. Remain calm.”

A short video was attached to the post:

There was a steep mountain covered with thick bamboo groves. Two military masters stood on the crest, one unarmed and one with nothing but a combat knife. They were facing six monsters, on average ten meters tall and as ugly and grotesque as can be. They were golden but looked thin and scraggly, suggesting they weren’t living all that well up in the sky.

After a moment, the military masters metalized to gold and began their attack, knocking monsters every which way like bowling pins. The combat knife was covered with golden true qi, which was the characteristic of the fourth life ring.

The monsters screamed with fury but were forced back. Two died immediately while the rest were suddenly covered with a strange purple light before disappearing.

Seeing this video helped assuage the chaos somewhat.

Later, another video was posted from Tai Dong Province, by the Tai Shan Science and Technology Group:

A young master in Taoist costumes carrying a duster entered a place where a horde of silvered beasts gathered. The duster was glowing with golden light and two small golden shields floated around it, slowly rotating around its body. It was condensed through true qi, which was the characteristic of the fifth life ring.

The dozens of silver monsters were beaten black and blue, and the Taoist master’s true qi flashed through their meridians and muscles and tore them apart from the inside. Every strike from his fists and feet threw the monsters hundreds of meters away.

Many monsters attacked with claws and swept with tails, but they were blocked by his true qi and couldn’t so much as scratch him.

The most powerful monster was a giant spider, like a golden hill with twelve massive limbs covered with golden true qi. This monstrosity of four golden life rings could spray golden spider webs so corrosive they could melt straight through solid rock.

But the Taoist was undeterred, blocked and attacked the spider with his true qi shield, broke the webs with the duster and rushed out like a bolt of lightning, jumping high into the air and smashing the duster on the spider’s bulbous head.

“Wow, is he from the Tai Shan Science and Technology Group? He’s so strong!” Someone commented below the video, accompanied by a string of emojis suggesting a sense of hopefulness.

Someone from Tai Dong Province commented, “What’s the Taoist’s name? Tai Shan Group, we’re proud of you!”

With such powerful masters protecting them, the people were reassured and peace and stability slowly returned to the cities.

Studying the new footage in the Yungang League’s underground bunker, Jiang Shaoliu was lost in thought.
