Queen Mira believed that Rian had changed after he met Ayden Rosewood, because of Ayden Rosewood.

There wasn’t any mind or poison magic involved: Queen Mira had checked in the past. So that left all other means of persuasion.

What did Ayden tell Rian during those fateful days, almost three years ago? What did Ayden do?

She knew that Ayden had divulged ‘his past’ to Rian, setting up an exclusive secret between the two of them. Rian vouched for Ayden’s background but never revealed what he knew.

Whatever Ayden told Rian, Queen Mira didn’t trust it.

She had looked very, very hard into Ayden Rosewood’s background, but it looked as though he appeared out of thin air.

No Rosewood servants could recall the late Lady Marie Rosewood’s pregnancy.

Queen Mira had checked out Ayden’s excuse of ‘living nearby’, but there was no such suitable house.

Meanwhile, the assassins had distorted memories.

One assassin’s memory showed him knocking out Alyssa Rosewood before it went hazy. All of the other assassins remembered going up the floors to take down the remaining Rosewood—but there was nothing in their memories a few minutes before they lost consciousness from asphyxiation. All they remembered was unstoppable heat and the difficulty of breathing.

For all the positive changes that Ayden Rosewood was bringing to his fief, his background remained impenetrable and a huge risk factor.

Now, recently, there had been a revival of the rumour that Prince Rian was infatuated with Earl Rosewood.

She was concerned, but she had no solid evidence.

Without evidence, she wasn’t going to confront him about it directly. She hoped those rumours were wrong and didn’t want to put ideas into Rian’s mind.

“Even if King Firestone himself requests a duel, I expect you to decline,” Queen Mira finally said.

Rian showed disappointment. “Yes, Imperial Mother. Imperial Mother, what about the papers? I hope that you can read them and present them to the Imperial Council. I understand that they’d have greater weight coming from you, and I hope you’ll support me.”

Queen Mira flipped through Rian’s papers. She assumed that Rian wanted to modify some laws, to be in line with the Rosewood fief.

The abolition of the death penalty wasn’t there.

Instead, the proposed laws included instating a minimum age of marriage, and adjusting marriage papers to have two any-gender participants instead of a male husband-to-be and a female wife-to-be—

Queen Mira put the papers down to the side. “No.”

“Why not, Imperial Mother?”

“Men marry women. The marriage laws in Sedaveria have been in practice for centuries.”

“However, the Rosewood fief has expanded that, leading to several marriages between men and between women. These marriages led to an increase in consumption which—”

“You will marry a woman. Your father and I will choose the best candidate,” Queen Mira said.

As the Crown Prince and the likely future king, Rian had to marry a woman. There was no other option—unless Rian wanted to give up being a prince.

She won’t make it possible for her son to marry Ayden Rosewood.

“—Do you understand?” Queen Mira’s voice sharpened. “I already have a few marriage candidates in mind.”

Rian’s calm demeanour didn’t break. “Imperial Mother, these proposed changes to the kingdom’s marriage law is to improve the wellbeing of the vulnerable people in the kingdom. These laws will make it easier to persecute the kind of scum who should be persecuted. This is beyond my future marriage,” he said. “This proposed change is not the smallest of the changes that I wish to bring to the kingdom. But I strongly believe it will make a marked difference in the lives of the people.”

“You haven’t answered my question, Rian.” Queen Mira sat tall, looking down on her son. “You will marry the woman your father and I choose for you. Do you understand?”

Rian lowered his head. “Imperial Mother, I…”

Queen Mira narrowed her eyes. His behaviour suggested that he had had improper thoughts. She expected him to acquiesce, though. He knew what was at stake.

“—understand.”

Queen Mira let go of her internal tension.

“—Unfortunately, I can’t do so.”

Queen Mira inhaled sharply. “Why not?”

Rian raised his head again. He had such a distraught expression that Queen Mira felt a twinge of guilt and pain in her chest.

“Imperial Mother, I love Ayden so much!”

Queen Mira: “…”

“Imperial Mother, I don’t know what to do, I don’t have anyone else to talk to.” Rian buried his head in his arms for a moment, before looking up again. “Mother, I want his hand in marriage. But he didn’t agree! Why didn’t he accept?”

Queen Mira was stunned. This wasn’t what she had expected at all! Marriage? Her Rian had proposed marriage already?! This was a lot more than infatuation!

“Mother, what do I do? He doesn’t want to marry me. Am I not good enough? How could he turn me down? It’s been so hard for me to try and hide it from you…but I love him so much, it hurts…”

Queen Mira felt a stab in her heart. She pushed it aside. “You’re only fifteen.”

Rian smiled sadly. “I knew you would say that,” he said, sounding defeated.

Queen Mira felt a stab in her stomach.

“I wish you could help me make him agree…Imperial Mother, how did Imperial Father get you to agree to marry him?”

“I’ve already said that you will marry a woman.”

Rian placed a fist against his chest. “But Imperial Mother, I have to try to win Ayden Rosewood’s hand first.”

Queen Mira narrowed her eyes. “Would you dare tell your father this?”

Rian nodded. “Yes, if you allow me, then I’ll ask him how he romanced you, or how you romanced him, and ask him for his help to romance Ayden. With Imperial Father’s help, I will certainly capture Ayden’s heart.”

Queen Mira’s face grew dark as she tired of Rian’s antics. “Do you not think of the kingdom? Of the family line? Of having an heir? If you continue like this and insist on Earl Rosewood, then Alexius will be made crown prince.”

“Alexius can pass on the family line. I could adopt him if you prefer a continuous line.”

“…He’s your brother and my second son!”

“Precisely.”

Queen Mira was speechless at Rian’s audacity. This had to be Earl Rosewood’s influence!

“Your Majesty, you may think that I’m being childish, immature, and wilful,” Rian said. “However, I’ve thought it through very clearly. The kingdom is my first and foremost priority. Alexius and his children can inherit the throne after me. If I don’t have children, this eliminates the infighting risk between my branch and his. And, Ayden is strong. Very strong. His people adore him. He grows stronger and richer and more well-loved each day. He has the very real possibility of taking over the kingdom if he wants—the Rosewood fief lies right next to the Azure fief. He can reach here within a few hours, maybe less, if he flies extremely fast. He could cast lightning down upon the palace when you least expect it. If I can marry him into our family, then I can establish the strongest bond between the Azure family and the Rosewood family. This marriage would align his interests with mine, and the kingdom would become twice as strong.”

“There’s no need for such drastic measures.”

“Is there anyone stronger than Ayden? Not to mention, he’s only fifteen.”

Queen Mira was not amused. “Of course. Not every powerful person shows off their strength in duels.”

Rian gave a light sigh. “Yes, Your Majesty. If Ayden continues to deny his hand in marriage, then I’ll marry the woman of your choice.”

“Do you wish to cancel your trip to the Hraun Nation?”

Rian raised an eyebrow. “On what grounds, Your Majesty? Has the Hraun Nation done something unforgivable? Or, do you wish to replace me on the trip?”

Unlike the tense history and situation between Sedaveria and Angio, Sedaveria was currently allied with the Hraun Nation. Queen Mira would need to come up with a very good reason why they had to cancel last minute. Or she would have to replace Prince Rian in the convoy with someone equal or higher in rank, such as with a duke or herself.

Planning these trips was a big logistics and management exercise. Making changes last minute was not a simple matter.

Queen Mira felt blocked in her heart. “Then I expect you to be on your best behaviour. You will not duel King Firestone. And you will not propose marriage to Earl Rosewood.”

Rian knew when to bend. He bowed his head. “Yes, Your Majesty.”

Queen Mira sighed. “Good. You’re only fifteen. You’ll understand when you get older.”

“If I’m fifteen and I don’t understand, then shouldn’t the minimum age of marriage be raised above fifteen?”

“Don’t play games with me, Rian.”

“You may not want people like me to have happiness, but that’s no reason to deny increasing the age of marriage to boys and girls who don’t understand enough or who are married at ages younger than fifteen. I would appreciate it if you would at least read these proposals, that I and my staff have worked on for the last few months. If not, then I’ll go and ask my Imperial Father next.”

Queen Mira smiled coldly. Indeed, it seemed that Rian was starting to become rebellious. “I’ll read them first.”

Rian smiled warmly. “Thank you, Imperial Mother. I’m deeply grateful for your time. May I be excused now?”

“You may.”

Rian stood up and bowed. “Have a good day, Imperial Mother. Love you.”

With that sudden declaration of love, Rian walked off, leaving Queen Mira with all the problems.

When was the last time Rian said ‘love you’? It was when he was just a toddler holding onto my skirts…

Rian didn’t carry heavy worries on his shoulders from his meeting with his Imperial Mother.

He was sure that she would eventually realise that he was independent, with his own goals and plans. He couldn’t always sit at her feet and blindly listen to her words.

Instead, he was already looking forward to the future—he planned to have a great trip to the Hraun Nation with Ren Xiyang, giving Queen Mira plenty of time to think about her next, non-reactive, steps.

The very next day, Ren Xiyang came to the Capital with his carriage, Kel and other staff, cart loads of goods, and a long tail of merchants who wanted to travel with them to trade at some place along the way.

Late into the night, King Edric and King Augustus settled on the final terms of the contract variation—including a clause for Prince Rian and Earl Rosewood to nominate someone else to receive the gold on their behalf. It had been very painful to read out the contract terms over mirror call, but that wasn’t Rian’s problem.

Early in the following morning, the contract variation was written on Rian’s special contract paper, and Rian and Ren Xiyang signed, along with the nominated person—Marchioness Celeste. King Edric immediately got the best Imperial Messengers to deliver the contract, driving a fast floating carriage. Marchioness Celeste would head to the Sedaverian-Angio border a few days later at a more sedate pace.

Then, at mid-morning, the convoy to the Hraun Nation left the Capital with great fanfare.

This convoy was different from the one to Angio. Rian, Ren Xiyang, and Count Aegean were coming again. But this time, there was Duke Blewitt, Healer Mage White from the Capital Hospital, Lady Clara Storm, a lightning mage from the Storm side-branch family, and Baroness Blanc, a wind mage who had a seaside fief next to the Aegean fief.

Queen Mira had watched carefully, noting that Rian entered the Imperial carriage, while Earl Rosewood entered the Rosewood carriage. There were several carriages between the two.

In front of the public eyes’, Prince Rian didn’t have any lingering glances at Earl Rosewood. He didn’t show any of that distress that he showed during that meeting with her.

A ruler’s private persona was never the same as their public persona. However, Queen Mira didn’t like the feeling of seeing her little son grow up so fast.

Rian’s matter weighed on her mind. Rian had said he didn’t know who to talk to on the matter of marrying Earl Rosewood. Well, Queen Mira didn’t know who to talk to on that matter either!

She didn’t want to tell her husband, not yet. But if not him, then whom? He was her closest confidant, and vice versa.

Later, Queen Mira had a private meeting with Alexius, to hear about his progress and how he was going.

“—So I think my studies are going well, Imperial Mother—though, I don’t need more work assigned to me...” Alexius added with a sneaky look.

“Don’t you want to be better than your brother?” Queen Mira asked.

Alexius blinked. “Well, that depends on what. I don’t want to be better than him in everything!” He had a childish, matter-of-fact tone.

“What if you become king, for some reason or another?”

Instead of excitement or interest, Alexius immediately made a horrified and disgusted expression. “Are you saying I might have to become king?”

“I’m speaking on the hypothetical. You’re a prince, Alexius.”

Alexius shook his head. “I don’t want to be king! Imperial Mother, you and Imperial Father are so busy and have so many meetings! Blegh!” He patted Queen Mira on the arm. “Imperial Mother, Rian likes having meetings, so he can be king. He’s already the Crown Prince, too.”

Queen Mira: “…”

Queen Mira said, “Although he’s the Crown Prince, it doesn’t secure his future position.”

Alexius frowned. “But Rian and I have already signed a contract. Once Rian becomes king, he’ll give me a monthly stipend of 5000 gold, minimum, and he’ll only make me attend at most one hour of meetings per day, or a total of seven hours per week. Are you saying he might not become king and so he won’t give me gold each month and make me attend all the meetings instead?!”

Queen Mira: “……..”

She was suddenly reminded of that carriage ride to the Rosewood funerals, where Rian gave Alexius three gold coins in order to pinch his cheeks.

Somehow, without her realising it, Rian’s bribery of Alexius had become serious! How did this behaviour emerge?

Queen Mira left that meeting with additional worries.

Alexius also left that meeting with new worries. Oh dear, what if he really had to become the king and deal with EVERYTHING?? How could he live????
