"God, you scared me to death!" She complained as she gripped onto Shen Tianyu's sleeve.
"That's right. Don't sneak up on girls like that." Shen Tianyu glared at him playfully. "Anyways, are you done paying?" She patted Bai Yaoxuan's band on her sleeve to calm the other girl down.
"Yes. I just had them credit it to my identification plaque." He raised his hands to hug her form behind but thought better of it and settled on nuzzling her hair with his nose instead.
"Oh? You never told me the identification plaques could be used as credit cards." She placed the hairpin she had picked up against Bai Yaoxuan's hair and looked at it. Then, she started looking around for a mirror to show her how it looked.
"Curedit ca?" Rong Jian mispronounced the unfamiliar phrase as he followed the pair of girls over to the furniture side where a mirror was displayed that they could use.
"Ah... um, how do I explain this..." Shen Tianyu and Bai Yaoxuan looked at each other in contemplation. They had gotten so used to credit cards back in their world that it was natural and now that they were in a world without the phrase, it was hard for them to explain the concept though they did have the concept but not a name.
"Um... it's basically an "I owe you" given to businesses and at the end of each month, an institution called a "bank" will pay for all of them then send you a bill that you need to pay?" Bai Yaoxuan hesitantly gave a summary of how it works.
"Yeah that's basically it." Shen Tianyu nodded as she positioned Bai Yaoxuan in front of the mirror and put the hairpin against her hair. "How does this look? I think it fits you perfectly!"
"Mm. I think so too. Lingling knows what suits me best, as always." Bai Yaoxuan smiled as she looked at Shen Tianyu in the mirror.
"Okay! Since you say that, let's just pick out a few more!" They walked back to the section for hairpins and Rong Jian followed along.
"Ooh...how advanced. Why didn't you tell me this sooner? I won't need to bring coins around all the time then." Shen Tianyu complained as she looked through all the hairpins on display. They were all put on full display on soft cloth. Each table had three layers and each layer was covered in the soft red cloth with hairpins on top. Gold, silver, and jade were all on full display and anyone could touch them. "Now that I look at this, with so many people touching these things, aren't the hairpins and furniture quite dirty?" Shen Tianyu furrowed her brows as she picked up another hairpin with only her thumb and forefinger as the though occurred to her.
"I believe the attendants clean them everyday and also hold your order for a final thorough cleaning before they deliver it to you. The ones in the warehouse can be taken home immediately because not everyone can see them and not all the people allowed to see them can touch them so they're relatively cleaner. If you're worried, you can have some of the servants clean them once we get back." Rong Jian picked up the hairpin Shen Tianyu was tentatively holding and waved over a shop attendant nearby, a different one than the one who had led them inside. The shop attendant immediately recognized Rong Jian and happily scurried over.
"Yes, Zhu Wangye?" The attendant bowed down when he was within earshot.
"Clean?" Rong Jian raised an eyebrow as he showed the other the hairpin in his hand.
"Of course, Zhu Wangye. The attendants all stay after closing to wipe down and clean all the objects on display and do a weekly cleaning of the items in the warehouse at the back. Once someone brings an item on display to the cashier to pay, the item will be kept for a thorough clean and will be delivered to its destination the next morning. Everything is absolutely clean and free of any diseases." The shop attendant affirmed as he stayed in his position.
