Rong Jian nodded in satisfaction with upturned lips at her qualities the man spoke about.

...

Shen Tianyu's body was lightly shaken, jolting her consciousness that was napping inside the Wind Shrine like a Western dragon guarding it's treasures. She immediately exited here space and settled back in her body. Her eyes shot open to meet that of one of the maids that were accompanying her in the room.

"Miss Shen, we're about to go out." The maid stated in a monotone, retracting her hands.

"Oh, okay." Shen Tianyu replied back with equal indifference, sliding off the couch and smoothing out her robes. Though she had made sure they wouldn't get wrinkled when she sat down but it didn't hurt to make sure. She stood poised behind the two maids as she allowed the sounds from outside the room to enter her ears once again.

The Head Minister of Ceremony was busy with granting well wishes of the ancestors to Rong Jian. Then, he called for the future bride to enter the hall.

The Empress's maids pushed open the door and went back to Shen Tianyu's side, each taking one of her hands as they led her out into the hall. Murmurs rippled through the hall once she was in full view, all of which she ignored as she could tell from the eyes of the people present, it wasn't anything good. She was led to the front of the hall, next to Rong Jian, who did not turn his eyes around despite trying to catch glimpses from the corner of his eye.

A smile bloomed on her face when the Emperor and Empress were within sight, the latter returning her smile. When she stood still, the maids retreated to stand behind the Empress as the Head Minister of Ceremony went towards her and repeated the same routine he did with Rong Jian.

"And now, for the exchange of wine!" The Minister of Ceremony signaled for some underlings to bring up the wine.

Rong Jian and Shen Tianyu each took a cup from the tray and held it in front of them in a bow. They first bowed to the Emperor and Empress, two[1] bows each. Then, they turned to the empty right side of the altar, where Shen Tianyu's guardian was supposed to be, and bowed twice. After that, the couple bowed twice to each other and drank the wine in their respective cups. When Rong Jian saw Shen Tianyu all done up for the first time, as he straightened from his bow, his eyes widened in awe. A light of adoration clouded his eyes as he tried to gaze at her a little bit longer, trying to imprint her beauty into his mind. Unfortunately, that haze was soon broken as the Minister of Ceremony announced the end of their engagement ritual.

"Now, now. There's no need for that. We're going to be family from now on, no need to be so formal."

"Emp- Mother, we're only engaged, not officially married yet." Shen Tianyu responded.

"That is of no matter. You will be marrying into our family in a month's time anyways. What's the problem in getting used to it ahead of time?" Kuian Xiaoli giggled like a teenage girl.

The two women chatted among themselves with the two maids trailing behind them as the Emperor walked a short distance away. The three princes were teasing the newly engaged Rong Jian who barely retorted back as he kept looking behind him to openly steal looks at Shen Tianyu.

The banquet hall was filled with much more people than in the ceremony hall, as there were some people not qualified to attend due to their status, age or by their own choice. A few that had adamantly refused to attend the ceremony tried to glare at this new to-be Wangfei, but being protected behind the four princes and flanked by the Emperor and Empress, they could only restrain their anger as they collectively greeted the royal family. As soon as the festivities began, people started wondering about, strengthen connections and building new alliances. Even the young people from big families, like Ningwu Liushan and Bai Longtian, who were understandably taught these kinds of tricks since young had conversations only with other children of equal or higher standing. Despite their apparent haughtiness, they still did greet the children of lower ranks when one passed by.

The older ones who already had their own circles laughed among themselves as they tried to subtly glance over at Zhu Wangye's table.

Rong Jian's table, despite it being his engagement day, was situated between the royal family and the rest of the ministers, signalling his place as the youngest of his brothers. Even so, it was on the highest layer reserved for the royal family.

The Banquet hall floor had three layers, with three steps leading to the next layer above. The highest layer was, as stated, reserved for the royal family. At the head of the hall was situated a platform holding two thrones, one for the Emperor and one for the Empress, with a matching table filled with a lavish feast that they could easily reach from their high seats. In other eras, the concubines would be seated below the Crown Prince with their own children in descending order from Noble Consort. However, as Kuian Guoliang did not have any other woman, it was the princes seated right below the couple. The Crown Prince was situated on the left, below the Emperor's throne. Then came the second Wangye, Qiao Wangye, Kuian Mingli followed by Jun Wangye, Kuian Zihao before ending the line with Zhu Wangye, Rong Jian. Technically speaking, as a member of the Emperor's household, even adopted, he would take on a new name befitting of the royal family. And indeed, he did have such a given name, Kuian Jian.

[1] In a wedding, it's supposed to be three, but this is an engagement so it has been reduced.
