"Is that so? Ah-Jian is indeed fortunate!" The Empress giggled.

"Asking the Empress, how did Your Majesty meet His Majesty?" Shen Tianyu asked back.

"Mn... I'll tell you if you stop calling me so formally~ We're already a family, there's no need for you to be so formal. Just call me Mother like the boys do~" Kuian Xiaoli coaxed Shen Tianyu.

"Empress, I'm only engaged, we're not officially married yet."

"That's no matter. We like you so of course we're going to let you get married to Jian'er. Unless you don't want to? Jian'er didn't bully you into this, did he?"

"No, Your Majesty. I merely think it a bit inappropriate. And the people might talk which would be unfavorable to the royal reputation."

"There's no need for you to worry over that too much, we'll be fine. Besides, the people do like an exciting love story. It's not like the officials have any say in the marriage matters of the royal family anyways. Now, come, call me Mother."

"... Imperial Mother." Shen Tianyu muttered, licking her lips afterwards with a slight crease in her brows. This title was indeed a strange one for the her of this world. Ever since she was born, she never called someone else that title, first it was because she didn't have the opportunity to do so before her birth mother died. Then, her adopter didn't treat her like a daughter at all so she deemed it herself that the other was unfitting of this title that personifies care and love. After she was brought into Yaodu, there was no female figure that served as a motherly model. Her Master was hopelessly single and most of the people in that group, regardless of gender, was pretty rough around the edges. The closest was probably the head of the kitchens, who would literally break down her Master's door if he didn't eat his three meals a day. Even when in seclusion, elders and her Master had to take in her tray of food and eat it.

In her last life, she only had a mother. Though she more or less had a few screws loose, the woman was her only other family and Shen Tianyu had loved her dearly. She saw with her own eyes from a young age how much the woman sacrificed for her and the affect such sacrifices had on her. Luckily, she found herself a significant other when Shen Tianyu was about to come of age so she was no longer worried about that aspect of her life. That was the only person she had ever called "Mother". And she was also the only person Shen Tianyu had decided was worthy of that title. Even her new mother-in-law, she will not call by that simple but meaningful title.

"Ah... I guess that's fine. They do only call me Imperial Mother." Kuian Xiaoli sighed.

"Oh, that's such a long story." Kuian Xiaoli said with a romantic sigh.

'Weren't you a General? How romantic was it? Please don't tell me it's a hygiene thing.' Shen Tianyu worried over the contents of said story a bit too late.

"You see, I was born in the Rong family, a group who basically had the title of the Right-Winged General in it's grasp. Every person of the Rong main family had been a Right-Winged General before or will be. My father, his father, my great-grandfather and so on..." Kuian Xiaoli had melancholy eyes as she looked into the distance, at something that was not there. Even while reliving the beautiful yet bittersweet memories, she still had a polite smile on her face, something expected of the Empress.

"I had an older brother that was to be the Right-winged General, after all the necessary tests of course. Our ancestors had always been strict about doing things by the books and that became a family rule. He successfully became a Right-winged General, and I, as the little tomboy that would rather play-fight with the boys than learn literature at school, also joined the army. We were a family of Generals, after all. I reckon I was born without a single elegant nor sophisticated bone in my body. Of course, it's not to say women were barred from joining the army, but the things the battlefield could do to a woman... sigh, you understand. No one wants their daughter to be scarred, it'd make them ugly. My father was also like that at first but considering our roots, it wasn't very strange so he accepted it after throwing a small fit. I was placed in the same platoon as my brother, my father demanding he took care of me. And that was where I met Ah-liang. It was the first platoon led by the General himself, so of course we had more opportunities to interact with the Crown than did other groups. Ah-liang was the Crown Prince at the time and seeing as we were at war with Tianan, the late emperor sent out Ah-liang to fight in the war in order to boost morale. The late Empress was adamant about refusing as he was her only son but ah-liang himself accepted the suggestion and went to the battlefront himself so she was helpless. Of course, being the Crown Prince at the time, the Emperor wouldn't risk putting him in some other platoon and gave him to my brother to take care of. We were the ones with the history, after all. The Left-winged General position had always been a free for all for the common people, a way out of poverty if you will, but since they were considered as being from unknown origins, they were less trustworthy in the eyes of the court." Kuian Xiaoli started reminiscing about her youth with a slightly warmer gaze as Shen Tianyu listened attentively while eating food from her table.
